View Full Version : No Turbo Miatas for Reno...
I stopped by Reno Mazda, and they ain't getting a single one at all this model year! Mega crap!!!
I guess they will all end up in Florida, and SoCal. May have to wait until 2005 model year.

No you can't. The turbo gets all the turbo goodies, different bottom end, better wheels, tires, and suspension... and only costs $700 more. :(

so take an NA, a modified Greddy turbo kit, a set of coil overs, some light 15s and the typical bracing and you can outperform it (by a long shot) at a MUCH lower price... hell, even a JRSC would make an NA outperform the MS NB.

Where can you get:
a modified Greddy turbo kit, a set of coil overs, some light 15s and the typical bracing
For less than $700?
I think what STIWish was saying is that you can build up a cool used Miata for not much money.
But I agree that if you want a new one, For Under $900 sticker difference from an LS, I'd take the Mazdaspeed version instead of going aftermarket considering a new aftermarket Turbo kits run from about 2K-5K and that doesn't get you the rest of the goodies on the Mazdaspeed version.

Ahh, that would make more sense.

What's the price of a '99 Miata + turbo kit and coilovers vs. a new MS Miata? I'm thinking that you can't do a current generation Miata for cheaper.
However, I believe a turbo'd or supercharged 1st or 2nd gen Miata would not only be way cheaper, it'd also be way faster.
John Evans' Miata is a great example of how much you can do to an older Miata...
I'd like the updated internals on the '04+ MS, and think of the chipping options with them only making 30 some odd HP stock. lets say that is a nice conservative 11PSI... Think of what 14 or 15 would do...
The updated safety, suspension, LSD, and ABS would be nice as well. Really hard to add all that to the older ones.
I did the research before Sue got hers. Basically, if I were going to get one today for the street, it would be an '01+ LS with the sport suspension(Includes strut-tower brace, Bilstein shocks, 16-inch alloy wheels, Torsen limited-slip differential, bigger brakes.), 6spd, and ABS.
All that plus a turbo in the MS would be so much nicer though...

NA == first gen... NB == second gen ... the NB gained a decent amount of weight on the NA, and due to lack of truely affordable options for boosting IE; no $1100 Greddy kit, I'll take the NA both on the track and on the street, as I dont need nor want ABS or even airbags.

I look at ABS as a tire-saver, it cuts down on your race tire bill due to flat spots... that's about all it's good for on my car, anyway.

I already have a race car. This Miata will be a daily driver (at least for a few years) so the newness, warranty, and greater reliability are more important than a few extra horsepower. Besides, I won't leave it TOTALLY stock. ;)

heh, i wont make the mistake of letting someone else besides me own my car... unless im TOTALLY secure financially and am totally single (well, this is a given)... but thats just me.
Aha... I know why Reno doesn't get any...
They are not a MazdaSpeed Dealership...
In fact, very few Mazda dealerships are allowed to carry MazdaSpeed vehicles...
Here are the ones remotely close to us. And everybody but Carson has at least 2 of them! Carso has zero.

Yeah, they also sell Subarus. If fact they sold Gary his USTCC WRX IIRC, at least there's a big picture of his car hanging on the wall in the service dept there.
They also had like 4 STi's when I was there... 2 white ones.

Meh, leather's heavy, hotter in the summer, colder in the winter, doesn't hold you as well, and costs more. Get it in a luxury car, don't bother with it in your weekend warrior race car!

The red inserts are going to look weird I think on the grey car, and there is no pure black cloth option. So red with red/black cloth, and grey with black leather. Leather also comes with a cloth top instead of vinyl

Hehe, there are some leather Bride/Recaro/Sparco so on and so forth seats that have your name written all over them.. ofcourse its like a letter per company, but im pretty sure they are all there.

Except race seats, I have heard nothing but horror stories about trying to fit aftermarket seats into Miatas. None of the brackets are designed to let them sit as low as the stockers. My fat head is already as high as I want it.

That's my biggest reason. And this isn't going to be my race car either.

Tada! http://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/seats.asp
Tada! http://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/seats.aspThey don't list seat height relative to the floor! If you have a tall torso like I do, this is the issue. With the stock seats, there is next to zero space under the seats when your butt is in them.
Most aftermarket seats/brackets are not designed to minimize seat height! They are universal seats with a marginally designed bracket.

Dean, we can talk to Nate about fabbing brackets for a set of Sparcos or whatever.
I was just commenting on the stories I had heard from Miata owners about the fitment of aftermarket seats, not actually looking to buy any really. The Miata stockers are actually pretty good, at least in the '01s.
In cars like WRXs where the stocks sit up in the air, it is no big deal, but on short cars it is a big consideration aparently.
Hard core race seats work well since often the brackets are actually connected to the seat on the sde, not the bottom.

Ive seen alot of major brand seats in Miatas at Miata meets over the years, but the big thing is trimming the shoulder supports to not rub the door.. most people who have thick legs or who are taller bolt the seats straight to the floor.

That might work fine as well.
Of course, like Dean said, I don't think either of us would be replacing them. Not anytime soon anyway.

I also keep wanting to build a Spec Miata that is still streatable sort of... 1.6 vs. 1.8 becomes the choice then though.

Is an easy choice if you have the budget and if the rules allow :) 1.8 > 1.6 for just about any application i can think of :)

Actually the 1.6s own. It wasn't until late last year that anybody won a spec miata race in a 1.8.
Interesting. I thought it was closer than that.
I also think about picking up The Evans' white one and putting a couple things back on to make it a summer street rocket.
A supercharged lightened beyong belief 1st gen could be fun.

Spec Miata rules Im not familiar with.. heh, I really like the rev happy 1.6 stock, but I was thinking in a very modded situation.. not stock vs. stock... stock vs. stock the 1.6 feels more spritely, and seems smoother than the 1.8 unless its a 99+ :)
