View Full Version : Window Tinting FAQ

Well I know some people are interested in getting some window tinting done, fear the summer sun!

EDIT: My car(now totaled not by me)is the black sedan if you have been to the meets. I have 20% all around(the four side windows and rear window).

I had my tint for almost 2 years and I have never been pulled over for having it too dark. 20% is illegal in the front door windows, IIRC 35% is the limit.

I paid $180 cash at the place listed below. He did and awesome job. On my old NEON I had a $250 pro job, and this guy below did better work than Trimline on Greg St versus price not customer service. He did the job in about 1.5 hours. Be warned this is a one man operation and there may be a wait to get in.

Nice, that guy does nice work...Hey Tyson, I still owe you a new window for the "mishap"...I'll cover it if you want to get it re-done...

I need to get a tint strip put on my new windshield, I wonder if he'll do it for cheap.

Ha I totally forgot about that, I think I hit him up this summer to put a strip on my new windshield also.

And, keep in mind that some window tinting can lower the effectiveness of a radar detector - if that's important to you.

what about tinting the front window.. I just saw my friends IS300 back home (went home for the weekend for a rifle match) and he has 5% all around and 50% tint on the front. the front tint makes the car (which is black) look cool. Was wondering what you guys thought of doing the front window..

I think front tint is nice, really helps darken the inside of the car, I haven't seen a lot of people do that around here though. If I lived in Phoenix, I'd tint the front like 20%

he did my evo and man it is a very clean job!!!! I would recommend him in a heartbeat

I also previously went to trimline also, and they were like $280 for the same thing, but man he works like a mad man.

Nice. I think probably around 8-10" max.
I always wanted to do a light mirror tint on my windshield to keep the heat out. I've seen minivans that come with it stock.

No coupon, but I did plug SECCS ("see that sticker?") and said that several of the group highly recommended his work and that he would likely see more of us. When I asked for the total, he said "what price did I quote?", and I said "no quote, I was told you were the right one to do the job --- how much?" That's pretty much how that went.

Can't make the meet (again), but I'll get pics going as soon as I wash the sucker.

Thats why everyone knows when you're pulled over, roll your windows down, and put your hands on the top of the wheel. And anytime you need to take your hands off, you tell the officer why you're doing it:

"I'm going to get my registration out of the glove box, officer."

"My license is in my wallet in my back pocket, officer."

You make their job a shitload easier when you let them know what you're doing. Remember, those guys don't know you, and have to treat every stop like the person's armed and pissed off.

Front's are limited to 35%, windshield has a limit for how far down a strip can go, the rest of the windows are unregulated and can be tinfoil if you like... assuming you've got 2 side mirrors.

I can only imagine what Trimline would charge for a 9 window job, esp. when 4 of the windows have 4 complex edges instead of the normal 2.

when i bought my car, the windows were already tinted so i don't know how much they were tinted. the only problem i have with it is at night when street lights aren't present, i can't really see what's to the left of me when i make left hand turns. i never really understood why too dark tint was illegal. i thought it was just to help mr. police man profile you.

I dunno, California boy that I am, it just feels strange having dark tint on the fronts. Still deciding, but I'll probably go 15% behind fronts, 35% at fronts. That's not backwards, is it? Darker back, lghter front, but not by much. 1 increment.

That's what I did. They did a pretty good job although they broke the clip that holds middle seatbelt when not in use. They tried to glue it which lasted about 20 minutes. They admitted the mistake and ordered the part. I had to go back to have them fix it, but at least they didn't totally fuck me over.

I had to get my car washed last Friday (had a date) and didn't have time to do it myself. Against my better judgment, I took it to Mission Car Wash and somehow they managed to rip 5 or 6 little holes in the tint on my driver side front window. :(

I can only guess that there was a rock in the rag they used to clean the inside of the window or the guy was wearing a big ring or something. There were like 5 little "chunks" taken out of the tint along with little tabs of tint so you could tell it was fresh. I noticed it as soon as I looked out the window when exiting their parking lot. :(

One thing I was concerned about was the window track or whatever part that made a 1" vertical stripe up the center of the window after some significant mileage. Both my 97 OB and my 96 Imp had it. Does anyone have this go on? Did it screw up your tint and/or make it look like ass?

The tint I had installed 2 years ago at trimline (the more expensive metalic stuff) has held up against that issue very well.

scoobymods has a procedure for taking care of that. Basically the little pad gets full of dust and hardens. You just scrub it a bit and it goes back to being frayed cloth or whatever it is. I plan to do it to my new/old wagon before I get it tinted.
