View Full Version : The new "KS Tech" Hood Vent scoop delete...

I finally got around to revising my hood vent. The fit is better, it is now flush with the hood, and the opening is a little bigger. I still need something to pull the front corners down, but I'm working on it...

I wish I had more time, Cory. I'd have one for every model year by now if I didn't have kids and an inconsiderate day job. You should see my mailing list of people interested in these after all I did was post some pics on NASIOC. I think I will do the 06/07 next, then the 01-03, then the GC/CDA.
I've also been working on some many other "KS Tech" products. Some cool stuff coming out in next few months.

You know, actually the Grillcraft mesh would look pretty good in the EVO vent. Hmmm...

Definitely for front-mount IC's only...
20 04/05 bezel frames have been ordered from a local machine shop. Grillcraft mesh is at the waterjet cutter. Gotta line up a powder coater. Pricing is not finalized yet, but it is around $200 (plus tax unfortunately for Nevadans).

BTW it looks great on your car. Combined with that (s20-something right?) wing, you have a very sleepy STi.
I still need something to pull the front corners down, but I'm working on it...Did you get the corners sucked down? I think a precision light smack with a rubber mallet should shape them beautifully. :)

I <heart> preskishon mallets!
No, I added extra studs to the front corners to pull them flush. Looks like Subaru may have had fasteners there at one point, since there was a nice clearance in the underside sheetmetal for them.
The spoiler is the Subaru-brand "Euro spoiler", only available in Europe. I've never seen another US Subie in person that had one and only one on the Intarwebs. I looked into importing them, but it would be expensive.

The final version is painted and on my car. I am very happy with the fit and flushness now that I added extra pull-down studs to the front corners. The paint didn't match perfectly using just the color code, but it is close enough for this one. Mesh and a few frames are at the powder coater.

That would be futile considering the high-pressure area that the scoop hole is located at. I also prefer the flush look to the reverse scoops that are out there that don't extract either (I assume). I do want to fool around with some sheetmetal ducting underneath the mesh to maybe get some bernoulli effect going on.
Kevin M
2007-03-12, 04:31 PM
I meant more by dipping the front of the mesh beneath the hood (or sheeting beneath it) but it all comes to the same since there is that high pressure zone there anyway.

I even though about extending the duct forward under the hood to try and find the airflow coming through the radiator. I've been meaning to duct tape up some cardboard to just see if any of it works. I use the hi-tech yarn test to see which way the air flows - tie some short pieces of yarn to the mesh and watch where it gets blown. :D

I am finding with the 02/03 design that having the scoop doesn't help too much. The scoop's fit onto the hood is not so great, but it doesn't matter for a scoop that stick way up. With something that has to be flush there is no way to get it right from the scoop. A hood is required. Check out what a guy off NASIOC ("Token Negro" is his name btw) sent me so I could do an 06/07:

There's a $50 minimum charge per job at the machine shop. So, I'm guessing he can't thread a little piece of steel for <$35 unless you've got 40 friends that need 'em too. :P
Also, Matt the more I see these things installed in pictures, the more I want one! I think his priority order was: '04-'05, '02-'03, '06-'07, <='01
In fact, I think the '08 would be before the '01 too if you could even make one for the '08.
JonnydaJibba

I don't think it's possible. The scoop is integrated into the hood. Maybe a limited run could be made for the 3 of us that would be interested. Plus maybe some NASIOC members. I'll just keep hoping. I'm sure it's a handful with a lot of newer gen Impreza owners wanting these.
knucklesplitter
2008-02-15, 02:54 PM
I didn't really see an answer. Perhaps it was, you are working on it, but slowly?Let me see how the 02/03 versions sell. To make only 3 of a GC version would be cost prohibitive. It costs me about $300 and 15-20 manhours of my time just to get the pattern right, and then they are fab'd in batches of 20 on a CNC machine. To machine a batch of say 5 would cost almost as much as to machine 20 (not counting material of course). Basically 20 is the minimum number I have to sell in order to make it worth my while and keep the price where it is (and plenty of NASIOCers bitch about that price).
And for '08+ I don't see how an '08 version is doable with the built-in scoop, but I'm open to suggestions. The WRX/STI hood is also steel in '08, so there in no weight advantage for an FMIC car to keeping it over a non-WRX hood except for the mad-tight-scoop-yo.

There's somewhere around a "Ga-Jillion" pre-'02 Imprezas on RS25.com that are running turbo swaps, and I'd say at least half of them are running FMICs. It may be worth your time to at least drop by over there and see how much interest you could drum up... Could be big $$$.

Aren't there more '02 WRXs than there are 2.5RS's of any year?
Edit, here's the numbers:
'98-'01 2.5RS total sales: 14,191 (http://www.cars101.com/impreza_archive99_01.html)
2002 WRX total sales: 22,910 (http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0199-904872/Subaru-of-America-Inc-Issues.html)
Chances are there's a much bigger market for the '02-'03 than the RS. If I were Matt, I'd wait to see how well the bugeye scoop delete sells before working on an RS version, unless he can get like 20 people that all commit to buying one on 25rs.com or something.
BTW: those numbers make JC cry.

If you made a crappy one that cost like $35 you could sell some, but stuff that's actually good gets about a brazilion posts of "I wish I could afford that." And maybe 3 or 4 buyers, ever.
Sounds like the SVX crowd.
"OMG there's a supercharger kit for the SVX!?!"
"Too bad it's $5000. :("
...meanwhile, the STi guys will drop $15,000 on a motor build alone, never mind the turbo, intercooler, EM, suspension... blah, blah...

Aren't there more '02 WRXs than there are 2.5RS's of any year?
Edit, here's the numbers:
'98-'01 2.5RS total sales: 14,191 (http://www.cars101.com/impreza_archive99_01.html)
2002 WRX total sales: 22,910 (http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0199-904872/Subaru-of-America-Inc-Issues.html)
Chances are there's a much bigger market for the '02-'03 than the RS. If I were Matt, I'd wait to see how well the bugeye scoop delete sells before working on an RS version, unless he can get like 20 people that all commit to buying one on 25rs.com or something.
BTW: those numbers make JC cry.
Very true. Just sayin'. If they start selling, it may be worth putting up a feeler...

He said it mentions it, but I can't read it either. The scoop delete on his car was the 1st or 2nd one I sold.

I sat in front of my computer yelling "Enhance" until I found this.
I read, "... the KS Technology scoop delete.... " but that's about all I can read.

02/03 Scoop Deletes with unfinished frames (and powder coated mesh) ship on Wednesday! Powder-coated black frames go to the coater today and should be 1-2 weeks.

+1. In person it's nicer than factory parts. Very good fit, really high quality fit and finish (all stainless hardware for pete's sake!).
'Course, it's gonna fit really well on my hood since that's what it was prototyped on, hopefully the tolerances aren't big on Subaru's assembly line, but judging by the '04 hoods, things will be fine.

The '06/'07 is done... finally!
Before flaming... realize this was just for test fitment on a TMIC car. The flushness was really hard on this one, but I'd say it was worked out pretty well. :D

It is worth noting that the Hood Vent frames are ultra-mega-precision-CNC machined from billet weapons-grade 6061 aluminum using mil.-spec. tooling. No Burmese soda cans (http://www.google.com/search?q=burmese+soda+cans&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t) were harmed in the making of this product.
