Yeah, Mike sent it out to the guys (I think they're in Sac) that do all his cars. I can't wait to see it in person, but there's a bunch of motor work to be done next before I pick it up. I'm hoping sometime in the next 2 or 3 weeks it'll be together and I can head down w/ the trailer to pick it up.

My RaceTech seats are sitting at GST... the pics are from the cage builders. Once the car's back in Hayward, the seats and harnesses go in. Then the motor next.
And at some point, I'm gonna need to get the fenders and doors cleaned up (I'll probably need a new LF fender, and some dent extractor type work on the rest of the left side). And I'd like to replace the rear sway bar, and that should hopefully get me to the start of the season (and hopefully through the season, tires and brake pads aside).

Um... I wish I knew... I'd like the Whiteline race bars, but I may just settle with boring out my rear bushings so they don't freeze up and get by with my current bar. It's not really the size of the bar(s) that I need to address, it's the "oops, the RSB is stuck in its bushings adding 400lbs of spring rate to the rear of my car when it's cold so I go spinning off freeway on-ramps and through fences" aspect I'd like to fix.
Really, I just need new rear mounts I guess...

$3500, though I'm not sure if that's the "going rate" or just the rate you get when you spend as much as I am at a shop in one sitting. It's actually more expensive to get a showroom stock cage like this than a "regular" cage, since so much of the interior has to be kept around, i.e. there's a lot of labor in working around the interior, trimming the dash, getting the door bars close to the doors but still keeping the door cards, etc.

Just saw this post... that's a Spec-C STi I/C spray tank that feeds an Aquamist 2D kit.
Since I'm going to 100 octane for racing and since I can't run alky due to rules, the water injection kit isn't going to be buying me much, so the kit's for sale (see this thread (http://www.seccs.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5472)). I'm asking only $600 (for an $800 kit, plus the $200 Spec-C tank, and braided line from the trunk to the firewall). So, if anyone's interested in going to water or alcohol injection, I've got the whole setup with very low miles on it (probably only 500-1000 miles, since I didn't run WI for autocross/street driving, just at track events) for cheap.
Um... I wish I knew... I'd like the Whiteline race bars, but I may just settle with boring out my rear bushings so they don't freeze up and get by with my current bar...This can likely be addressed with fender washers or other spacers between the U bushing brackets and the mounts. I had a similar issue. You may need longer bolts to do it.

You might think this is teh funnay... My 88 Saleen had the squeakiest swaybar bushings, and I think they would bind up occasionally too. Gawd, it was annoying. So I drilled a hole thru the mounts and bushings and tapped in a zerk fitting. Gave the bushings a shot of grease every oil change and problem solved.
This unfortunately didn't stop me from spinning out sometimes on freeway on-ramps...

Track only... once my registration comes up next year, I won't be able to smog it due to the standalone EM, so I'm going to register it for off-road use only, and drop the insurance on it (there's no coverage if I crack it up at the track after all). The only reason I'd keep the ins. on it is if it's not covered when it's on my trailer by my existing insurance, or for theft... I need to talk to Art about it (you done moving yet buddy?).

I tried that already... but I may need to try again with more washers and some longer bolts. I really wish the bushings were grooved for grease retention and/or had some fittings on 'em... but the Whiteline mounts I've got are just like the OEM, just beefier and w/ polyurethane bushings.

Oh, I forgot to mention I "grooved" mine with a dremel tool. And mine were the stock bushing holders - I just tapped the thin metal. Knowing me back then I may have used some J-B Weld to help hold the fittings in.

I might just do that... cut some spirals into the poly w/ my dremel. It would help hold the grease, and effectively increase the diameter of the hole allowing the bar to rotate better.

I was planning on ordering up wheel from Nick at Speedware (if I ever get enough time to call him up and confirm the damn order, I suck at returning calls)... same wheel as Cory's, since it's got a nice deep dish that gives my legs room and allows me to sit back a bit.

Well, the wheel is whatever NRG wheel (3 spoke, nice grip, red stitching), but I might have a Sparco 2" dish 2-spoke with a rally stripe in suede shortly, which would work better, or I have a Sparco D-shaped wheel, which, if you can get over not being round, gives you a ton of leg clearance. Old ass pic, this isn't with the QR.
http://www.hooptywagon.com/img/DCP_1633.JPG
The cool part is the short hub (it's like .75" deep) and the QR, which will work with any wheel.
I'll take some pics. I might try and come up weekend after next, but we'll see what's going on.

I was leaning towards a D wheel until I sat in Cory's car... the 65mm dish gives me a ton of leg clearance and allows me to hand-over-hand comfortably which I'll need because I still have the slow-ass OEM WRX steering rack. Also, I certainly don't need a short depth hub/QR... in fact I was planning on a spacer with the wheel to really get "all up on it" without having to cramp my legs.

It's steel, and I'm assuming it's getting painted. I'm assuming the dash is back in just for fitment reasons, and they'll yank it off again and get a nice coat of paint over it. I told Mike to have 'em paint it red, but if they do it in the standard black, I won't complain.

There's not much I can add, since I can't add additional connections to the chassis... I'm only allowed 6 points, plus the optional 2 to the firewall. I don't know that additional bars from the current points will really make it much safer, just heavier... but then again, I haven't seen the cage in person yet, all I know is what you can see in the pics, and that this cage is the "standard" sort of design they use for Showroom Stock cars.
AtomicLabMonkey
2007-03-08, 01:05 PM
What I'm talking about doesn't require additional chassis points, you're connecting between existing cage bars - see drawings for a visual. Those 2 bars would increase the cage stiffness quite a bit and improve cabin integrity in a rear-facing impact (like backing it into a wall).

Remember that that ring will have to be under foam padding which would make it tough to use. A plain strap can run through slots in the padding easily.

Scott, I've heard that some tech inspectors are very picky about window net installs. I don't see how the purple strap stays in place if something goes wrong. The way it looks to me the front of the net can move left and right while at speed. I would weld a tab on the door bar its self just inside the door panel and order and custom sized net which you may already be doing. Also keep in mind looking out that side mirror and having room to slip your finger out to point someone by. With out being in the car getting the right net may be difficult. I can shoot some pics of mine on Friday but I'm sure you don't want to wait that long.
wrxkidid
2007-04-11, 09:48 PM
couldnt you have a slot in the padding that covers the ring just like a slot that the purple strap would go through and then clip onto or have the purple strap sewen into place after going through the rign because then the net would be able to be tucked away between the cage and the seat when not in use and it wouldnt prohibit getting in and out at all.
i agree with sfvette the way you have it now seems as though the purple strap would slide around if you god forbid ended up on your lid.
AtomicLabMonkey
2007-04-12, 09:36 AM
The purple strap stays on the lower bar because you weld or thread a retaining washer/nut onto the front end of the bar. And if the net assembly is installed correctly it will be under some vertical tension when you have the top spring loaded bar in place, so that lower front corner won't move much laterally. Yes, it will of course deflect a bit if something impacts it, but the function of the net these days is basically only to keep your arms inside the vehicle, and it should do that job fine. It doesn't have to take the force of a full torso hitting it like in the bad old days when guys raced on bench seats with lap belts & jockey helmets.

Austin said it. The purple strap will be length adjustable to make sure it's nice and tight when the top of the net is attached, it can't slide because any lateral movement would require the strap to stretch. Plus, because of the tension and because it will be under the bar padding, I can't see it moving at all.
As far as the coverage, I think if anything the net may be too small. I will have plenty of mirror visibility (plus I've got a 14" curved interior mirror on order to bolt to the forward roll hoop), and I think I will be able to point out the window in front of the net if I stretch my arm out.
Having to design this window net deal w/o being able to get in the car and try it out is a pain in the ass, but this setup (with the strap) has been used in the past on cages that have been signed off by the SCCA. I really don't want something welded to the door cross bar, just because I know I'm going to be scraping my knee on it all the damn time, and I'll have to climb over the rod whenever I'm getting in and out.
