OK, well I may be jumping the gun here. According to WEATHER.COM, the weather for this upcoming weekend is suppost to be exactly the same as last years' event.

Make sure you bring your heavy jackets!!!

Other than the weather, I can't wait.

Dude, you can use a loaner helmet (they only itch a little at first).

Plus 1 for a loaner helmet. Did my taxes, and they were very evil to me. However, its not like I have the money to give to those RAT BASTARDS anyway.

Humm. This is interesting. Excerpt taken directly from the 2007 Reno Region Supplemental rules.

3.3.2. Novice Class Eligibility
Drivers that have never competed in more than 50%
region or club are eligible for the Novice program.

From my understanding, when I sell my STI to Pete and get another vehicle, I can actually run it in Novice till I get used to it. I only made it to 50% of the events last year. I only made like 4 events the previous year.

I'll probably come down and hang out. I still need to get a new windshield, mount up the tires and get an alignment before I saddle up to race. The funds are still looking a little low from my BX race season too. So it will probably be September when I race out here.

True, but if you run at all this season in AS (or whatever) and switch to N, you're not eligible for Novice awards.

If you are smart enough to be in a debate club, you should be able to figure out how an AutoCross event is ran.

Scott, I'm not concerned about taking a novice award. Its pretty obvious that I am not a novice. I am more interested in learning a new car (if Pete gets his loan) then being the top Novice Class driver.

No reason not to run in ESP for points while you're 'learning' the car, which shouldn't really take you all that long to be honest. Running in class will help you gauge your progress in the car. running Novice doesn't really give you a way to quickly check how fast you are (or aren't).

Kevin M
2007-04-11, 11:25 PM
$25/day for members, $35/day for non-members. You would possibly be able to borrow an air pump before you had to work or drive, but it's easier to pump your tires up to about 40psi cold and let the air out as they heat up between runs before you get there. Other than that, just bring your driver's license, cash or check to cover your entry, and don't forget to show up early for tech, since it's the first weekend of the year!

Those crazy F's in SM have too much HP.

You're tellin' ME!

Robbie, show up at 8 at the latest, so you can get through reg. and tech in time for the driver's meeting. Really, I suggest to all newbies to do like I did last year and get there as early as you can, i.e. 7am, and help set up the track. It really helps you get a good look at the courses and get familiar with them.

By "spot him", Cody means that you have to have someone along with you at all times on the track while you're taking pics. If you're focused on taking a picture of a car, looking through the view finder of your camera, you might not see the car spinning out coming up behind you, so you MUST have a spotter to watch yo' back!

Loaner helmets are free if I recall correctly, you just have to clip your driver's license to their clipboard as collateral, so they can make sure you bring the helmet back!

NevadaSTi
2007-04-12, 07:33 AM
Spoting is a safety issue, if your buddy is concentrating on taking pictures, he isn't exactly looking out for the car he doesn't see. I.E. people get hurt that way.

Plan on being there by 7:30 AM.

Yup. Drive slow though please. :)

Found this with a quick search too:

The typical route is pasted below, but here's a shortcut: exit Lemmon Valley Rd., (there is a McDonalds at that exit); go past the light, 1st left turn is Military Rd, take that to the deadend, left on Echo Ave, right on Mt Vida (Stead Blvd turns into Mt Vida), you'll be at step 4 below, and will have missed the traffic lights down Stead Blvd.

Stead Airport -- Stead is located just North of Reno
1: From the Interstate 80 and US 395 junction, take US 395 north from Reno (towards Susanville.)
2: Take the Stead Blvd. exit and turn right (East).
3: Continue on Stead Blvd. all the way into the airport. At the "Y" intersection, remain in the right lane.
4: Once through the airport gates, turn left at Alpha and immediately right on Petriciani.
5: Proceed to the grandstand area to park and register.

A grill can affect performance though. Maybe its not noticeable on Subarus, but on other cars it can be. Increasing air flow, redirecting air flow, weight reduction, etc. These are all things that national level competitors worry about. When races come down to hundredths of a second, every little bit becomes important.

What if I took out that 5.0L v12 BMW motor and put it in a Mustang... is the car still the same? :P

Besides, you *can't* take a 1965 mustang motor and put it in a 1990 body and run in ESP. The line in the ESP rules is for '79-'93. So you can update/backdate only within those years, and ESP doesn't allow you to "build up" a motor outside of the factory specs w/ factory parts.

And we are telling you that havign an old school engine does not give you an old school car.

'65 fastback with Triton V8 = old school.

'90 Mustang with C7AE = not old school.

'93 Impreza with '05 STi drivetrain swap = old school Impreza.

'07 WRX with '94 EJ22E = not old school, even though it has an old school motor.

Looks like me at work today when the computer (aka pice of shit) I was working on started loading all kinds of automatic bull shit. I just needed to finish some simple task but no the computer wanted to go into some 30 minute long update or something. Glad to be done with that.

Now it's time to go test fit the 235s to see if I should roll the fenders or not. My 615s are ready but it would be a shame to leave the Yokohamas sitting in the garage on Sunday.

And in general, SECCS made quite the showing at round 1. Check out the PAX results... fully 1/3 of the points paying positions are SECCS members, and that's with 5 ringers from Sac that came up to put the smack down on us.

Oh and Cory, not to suggest that you swap classes but just to gauge our results, you and I would have finished 7th and 10th in overall PAX with the TDSP modifiers. And if your 56.6 had been clean, you would have been in 6th overall PAX, just a 10th behind MattR.

Just something I was thinking about while looking at the autox pictures from Sunday:

Cody, you didn't go back to your stock grill for round 1 did you? Which means that technically, with a 1st in class and 11th place PAX finish, you took a lot of points from people below you in a car that doesn't actually conform to your classes rules.

Now I know that the grill has no real performance benefit, but there are potentially people out there that won't see it that way. Plus, it's just not cool to knowingly run illegally. You probably should go back to your stock grill for ESP, or come play with us in SM.

Sorry to be a rule nazi, but if you're going to be running top-10 in PAX this season, you should be concerned with being legit... even if the rules are dumb.

Nick Koan
2007-04-18, 11:22 AM
Don't forget the badging too.

Seriously though, when you start showing up in the top spots like that, the rule book gets a better chance of proverbially being thrown into your face. There were also a lot of ESP competitors and also now PAX competitors that might not be as forgiving.

Personally, if I were you, I'd err on the safe side and either go back to a stock grille and badging or into SM.

NevadaSTi
2007-04-18, 11:30 AM
I was gonna say, don't forget about badging also. But I think it should be said that all the people around here who are running badge-less should get their bagdes put back on. Whether you have them or not.

cody
2007-04-18, 01:05 PM
Well honestly I wasn't too worried about getting protested...as long as I'm still able to compete. Like I told Brian when he got a ride on Sunday, if sombody feels they need to win by protesting an aesthetic mod that does nothing for performance, let 'em.

But I think swapping grills should be pretty easy. The stock one has a broken tab, but I don't think it's an important tab and even if it is, that's why god made zip ties. And I have the badges so I think I'll just glue them to a strip of magnet sheet.

It's funny but I'm less concerned with getting protested than I am with just not being a dick. It sounds like you guys are saying it's kind of a dick move to compete while knowingly breaking the rules. I can see that I guess.

To be honest, that's really what it boils down to. For example, does Cory's C/F hood really make that much of a difference? Sure it's a bunch lighter, but if you're cool to run with your grill overlooked, then why not overlook the hood too? ...next thing you know, I'm running for the CSP championship. Everyone knows it wouldn't go down like that, but we also know "the rules are the rules". When I was in STX, I too had to take the STi grill off and put back on the OEM one. :(

The main gripe I have with those rules is that it's not like a car debadged like mine or Cory's competes with the cars in class that the debadging puts us in. I mean there should be a kind of progession in bumping up classes for that kinda thing. Like if I'm in a stock class and I have a CF hood, I should go up one class, not to SM... But maybe I'm just noob babbling.

cody
2007-04-18, 01:24 PM
I'm pretty sure that would add to the complexity and nobody wants that. The fact is that anybody can obtain the proper badges and body panels and compete along with everyone else. If this sport didn't encorporate so much homogenous requirements, it would get way more complex to the point that nobody could figure anything out...not that I can figure things out by RTFRB anyway.

NASA time trials rules work this way. Each mod is assigned a point value. Add up all the points and figure out what class you're in. It's a cool idea, but nearly impossible to police, and just about as hard to figure out what class you're in without having an online form.

I am going to run SM this year due to my VF43. I have not been able to document that the engine is the same in 2007 vs. 2004, so technically, my Stock Turbo swap is not covered under update backdate. I probably made a mistake when I decided on the VF43, but to late now.

[soap box]
IMHO Rules are just that, Rules. No matter how stupid you believe one to be, they are what they are.

There really are no shades of gray with most of them.

If you knowingly run with something that does not comply with the rules, you are cheating, no matter how you justify it even if nobody protests.

I almost put on a full ALK for the track instead of the offset bushing and was going to resign myself to FP. I also thought about just running RNP all year.

If you just want to drive, you can, RNP twice a day and compare your times in any way you want.

If you want to compete, you need to follow the rules. That is what competition is all about. People agreeing to compete against one another based on a given set of rules.

Nobody is forcing you to autocross, or pick a class to run in, in fact we specifically give you the option not to worry about rules except for those related to safety called RNP.

Complaining on this forum will not change National rules or regional ones for that matter. Want to change either, get involved, and propose changes. New people getting involved is what spawned the creation of SM and ST classes after countless years of minimal changes to the "classic" classes.
[/soap box]

I pulled off a top 10 season PAX in a bone stock Miata. No $1000 shocks, extreme alignment, and not even the "Right" model/option package.

Stop bitching...

Shut up and drive.

And if you are willing to listen, I will certainly try and help you drive better.

Here's the way I look at mickey mouse rules like the de-badging rule:

I look at it as buffer to help all the other rules. If you are simply told to go look the rule book b/c your car has an illegal grill or re-badging you are more likely to read *all* the rules associated with your class and others. We talk about the self policing, well we wouldn't have "police" if some us didn't read the rule book. Like others have said when you step up to a more intense auto-x arena you'll be better off to know the rules, and the only reason you know the rules is b/c you were told about your de-badging or wanted to find out for yourself?
