Started looking into karting last night. They have a Senior class for folks over 35yrs at the Reno track. The picture below shows what I'm currently most interested in. It would have a 125cc engine, no shifting and only rear brakes. Next weekend there racing both Sat & Sun if anyone else is interested, let me know. I'll be going out one or both of the days to check things out.

What time do you start on Sat and can we get into the pits to watch the prep process? The wife is very interested and I'd like to get her as close as possible. Chicks that go fast are cool.

We're going to the BD party on Sat so I'll be racing on Sun now. Here is the normal schudule.
9:00-9:30 Driver meeting then practice after
10:30-11:00 Start 1st heat
than everything run til around 4:00 - 4:30.
They are a lot of fast weman out there. Pit pass is $5 each (that was use to be they might change?) and pit walk is all wellcome. This is a club race so many people are willing to share lot of info. Just don't talk to the guy that kart break down and and to fix it before the next heat race. hahaha :)

I went out to the track today. The 80cc shifters put on a good show. The bumping down the front straight was crazy. Talked to alot of nice guys. I only heard a couple of heated conversations after the races. Not everyone was happy with how they were passed. I'd like to get a chance to take a couple laps solo to see how they feel.

It's for RallyX but I've sent them some emails to see if they've done any road testing. I figured with some wider tires and a little work on the suspension it could be magic if sold in the U.S.

If the CRG purchase was to happen, that would mean the sale of the wagon. The CRG kart is a 80cc shifter that would be run with the Stead Karting Club in the 80cc Novice class and not at autocross.
Is there a 125 novice class? If so, then you could do both... On second thought, you could run the 80 in F125 at autocross I think...

Nobody run 125 this year, not even 80 soft tires (most of the fast guy run). Everybody come down to 80 hard tire, that why we have to split it to 2 class 80 novice and limited. 80 in F125 is hard, you have to get at least soft tire and front brake but still down in power.

This is the first kart that I'll actually go look at. The CRG that I posted was sold before I had a chance. These pictures are of a Trackmagic 125cc Honda engine and 6spd gearbox. The wife has not give the go with not selling the Subaru yet but we'll see. Enjoy the pictures of your possible competition nex year.
I don't care for the yellow body work and the seat is probably to big but that can change. It's one of the cleanest I've seen yet.

The kart is going for a very "flexable" $3,000. Hope to pick it up for $2000-2,300. It's a Trackmagic Diable 2000. It's kinda been hanging around a garage between 2003 and now. Comes with the cart, lots of old tires(burn them up learning this winter), fuel jugs and misc odds and ends.
The learning curve is going to be steep on this baby. I'm always up for something new and challenging.

I worked until four this morning and thought about it all night as I was left foot braking.
The wife rolled out a little before six and I was off to the kitchen. Before she was out of the bathroom, I was now armed with fresh coffee in hand, eggs, sausage, muffins and juice. Baby, I said with a smile. Wife,"Does this have to do with your new desktop picture?"
To make a long story short, I've been approved for the buy if it ends up looking as good in person as in the pictures. Yep, it was worth only sleeping 2 hours and getting the food ready and the smile. It was all in the smile.:D
Next will be a driving suit, full face helmet, gloves and lets not forget rib protector. After a couple of laps in Zpeed's 80cc without the rib protector, I now know how important it is.
Go get it... I want to try it some time. Keep the fat guy seat handy. :)
Maybe whoever has it would throw those in as well if they have them...
I thought jeans and leather jacket were acceptable if not preferred???
I have a large FF M2000 or M1995 around somewhere that the SNELL sticker pealed off of if that would help?

I'm going down with the wife after she gets off work. Going to take some more pictures so Zpeed can see it and also still need to talk the price over.
Thanks for the option of your helmet. Money will be tight until I can work some overtime. Alpinestar makes a kart specific suit with pads that I'd like to get.
I need to save for the money to join the kart club so I can start getting track time in. Purchase weights before comp. because I'm to light. Min weight with driver is 385 lbs. Between placing the weights, shifting the seat around and axle width, I should be able to balance the sucker out.
Man, I need to take a nap but I can't get my eyes off Watkins Glenn on ESPN. My dad was going to go but the prices are to much for him. I purchased a weekend package for Fri, Sat & Sun years ago and took him. He said he could not find any weekend packages and it was going to be $75 for Sat or $95 for Sunday. With the poor economy in upstate NY they're not going to fill the seats with that high a price tag. Hope I can get back next year and take him. Damn sometimes it sucks to miss home.

Picked up the kart for 2500. I had to pick up a full face helmet and a abrasion suit (you can just run in jeans and jacket). My budy Wess has been into dirt bikes for years and can help me re-build the top end when it comes time. So really, only the initial cost until later this month when I buy my trailer. Have not sold the shifter yet. If you know anybody looking for one please drop them my information. The big black X will find it's way onto my helmet for the last race of the last year. A trip down the hill this winter may be required to drop my other two X races. That way, starting in the rear of the field at the start of next year will not be a factor in points. Still need to pick up an external starter and battery charger.

Ran our first TAG race on Sunday. Your first few races, you are required to put a big black X on the back of your helmet and rear number plate. They call you an X head. Practice went well. Qualified infront of a couple of folks but had to start the first heat in the back because of my X head status.
First heat was able to make a couple passes and kept it clean (six laps).
Second heat they inverted some folks but yep started in the back again. Made a couple more clean passes and then sat in fourth as we all became jammed up behind a slower kart. The guy in second was racing for a championship and did not want to take any chances and the fellow directly infront of me almost lost his exhaust and was black flagged (8 laps).
The main started with the start getting waved off and yep started in the back again but that's the way it goes until the X is gone. The championship leader started to my inside on the back row because of his earlier DNF (tail pipe issue). Followed him through some traffic (nose to bumper fun). He became tangled up with a slower kart, so I moved on passed them and into third. By this time the two leaders had left us. You have to get your passing done quick or the front row is gone!.. Ran out the rest of the laps in third but he passed me on the last lap. Made it back to his bumper in the next corner and had a bad thought about sticking my nose to his right rear corner but thought better. Finished up the main in fourth and with a clean nose. The following pictures are from the main event.
Holy Karp, that looks/sounds fun! :D
Sweet dude!!! Great job... All that driving a big American bus every day and a relatively soft suspensioned wagon have honed your skills so a quick responding kart is just a play thing first time out... :)
Congratulations.
I keep telling everyone that the crappier car you learn to drive fast, the better you will be in a good car/kart...
[Scott's rant about crappy cars are just crappy and karts are not cars will begin here in the near future] :)
Hey! WRX wagons are not crap, especially soft suspensioned ones!

Heading down to Jim Russell kart track at Infineon on Sunday to set the kart up on the National track. Sunday after next we'll head down the hill again for one of the Jim Russell races.
Yep, I'm hooked.
Rollilng into the start...plant your front bumper against the dude or chick in front of you...let him/her brake for you both while you drop your accelerator and burn your clutch...green flag drops and both of you rocket off passed everyone else.
Anybody thinking about karting should drop me a line. The Norhtern Nevada Kart Club is full of great people and sorry but running wheel to wheel is better than chasing the clock.
Pictures from the trip to Infineon to follow. End of the season = lots of great deals on used karts. Now is the time to pick up your equipment ladies. PM me with any questions about the kart club.

This is how I see pro and con on both.
Kart pro: Real wheel to wheel racing. practice, qualify and 3 heats beat 5-6 laps on 1 min course.
Kart con: Equipment is pricey, you need to tow a trailer or pickup truck. On race weekend usually I pack and get everything ready by Friday night. Saturday head out to the track 2-3 hours to set up your kart. Then Sun is a whole day race. That is it your whole weekend gone.
Auto-X pro: Use you own car just a few upgrade will do. You done in half a day so you wife don't get mad and you can take her out to dinner after the race.
Auto-X con: 5-6 laps that is it.
I do both 2-3 years auto-x, then switch back to gokart. Now without a job my wife said no job no play. So until next year. PDX maybe!!

nice write up about the Karting. I'de be interested if they had rentals, but my poor lil rally car needs too many things to buy a kart.
I agree with what dean said about driving a crappy car. I feel like driving my 93 on stock springs and dampers (rally crossing it, and full stage rally on 15 year old springs + blown dampers) has helped out my learning a bit. :D

Tag kart is almost ready for the 09 season. Going down to Davis for a double header in late March to get rid of my X head races, aka rookie stripe. Worked on fitting the new body work and will pick up my engine later this week. Sorry for the crappy cellphone picture.

Northern Nevada Kart Club held it's fourth race of the 2009 season today.
Ran a 51.5 second lap in the main for my best time of the year. Had a great battle for third but ended up just off the podium in fourth.
Next weekend is our big IKF event. If you want to see some great racing and possibly some future stars of the sport, you should come out. I'll be working the grid on Sunday. Come on out and say hello and enjoy the wheel to wheel action at Desert Parkway.

Wow, what a huuuuuug off. Kart is brown, suit brown, inside and out of my helmet brown. Have to take the kart all the way down to the frame and start cleaning. I've been off before but never actually tasted the dirt.
