Not only is this a sweet picture, but it's also a great example of heads-up driving... check out Cory craning his neck to look into the next corner.
...and it's cool to see that in virtually every other picture in this set, everyone else also doing a great job looking ahead. It seems like Dean's harping on us for the last few seasons is actually working! (Dean, please note, this is not an invitation to harp on us more. :P)
Also, I didn't even recognize my own car, so I touched it up so it's more familiar:

lol yes sir. i live directly behind fritz's, but ill be moving shortly to a house up off socrates. tired of the drunk ppl vandalizing my car. i've had ppl pour beer on it, egg it, and some bastage threw a brick at my hood (hence the new white one).
Also, I didn't even recognize my own car, so I touched it up so it's more familiar::lol: Nice. (Did you forgot the dollar signs coming out of the exhaust?):)

Could you give me an idea of how you got this shot? Approx shutter speed, zoom level, panning technique, etc? I tried hard to get that effect when I was out taking pictures, with little success.

well the thing is, when we're out in the sun like that there is ALOT of sunlight available for the camera to adjust the aperature and the shutter speed for you.
so the camera will likely pull a moderate aperature for decent depth of field, but with those low aperatures the shutter speed will have to compensate for a SUPER fast speed. 1/5000ths etc.
most motion will be totally stopped by 1/500th. so what i did was cranked up my aperature. f22 and lowered my shutter speed. like 1/100 - 1/180th. if you were to just try and snap photos of moving car at this speed they will probably be blurry, but if you pan with the moving car while taking photos you can get the background to blur and the image your panning with to stay in focus.
just practice on moving objects. it takes alot of practice to time it correctly and maintain the object your panning with to stay in focus. i took about 500+ photos from saturday and sunday combined and have to go through them on my pc at home to cull out that out of focus ones.
hope this helps = )

oh yea, most of the photos from saturday were blurry because i was sitting near the bus, where the cars were turning, so when i panned i had to pan in a "u" shape, while they were making the turn. practice standing like directly parallel from a moving car when you start trying to take panning shots, its much easier.
and when you try and look at the photos in the little lcd (im assuming you have a dslr). make sure to zoom in and look at numbers or the headlights, those are good indicators if you panned at the right speed because they will be SUPER crisp.
that above evo shot isn't in focus as much as i'd like. -_-

hey i like it so thats all that matters. i love how the backround is blurred.

yup, thats the point = ) i used to shoot for the UNR newspaper last year and have grown acustom to making images tell a story. if its just a snap shot of the car, with wheels frozen still it seems kind of bland and not storytelling. with the blur it gives the photo a bit of sotry telling.

Thanks for the tips. Yeah, I was trying the low shutter speeds and overexposing slightly too, but the panning timing was killing me.
Even when I pre-focus, there is a slight delay to the shutter, so I need to practice "swinging through". The problem shows up when the viewfinder is obscured during the shutter release process --- you aren't able to follow the car. I need to probably a) zoom out a little more, b) use both eyes, c) take a lot of throwaways.
Yeah, the likelihood of getting a super-crisp shot at full resolution is probably nil with my gear, but at least photos like that EVO look great at 800x600 or so.
I'll keep practicing.

I think the car is pretty cool... it's just really "rough around the edges"... IIRC it's been through several owners, each one butchered it a little more. It really needs an expensive going over to clean it up and make it pretty.

Funny, the story I got is that John's the original owner. Who knows. I just know that it looks and sounds terrible. :p I mean, if I see an RS that has had that treatment in 20 years I will either cry or get violent. Or both.
Funny, the story I got is that John's the original owner. Who knows. I just know that it looks and sounds terrible. :p I've heard the same - he got that car new when he was in high school, and has been the only owner. Now the motor, that's a different story I think.

no not at all. i might throw somemore photos from 'other' cars up incase they ask. not just all the suby ones. lol
i'm thinking about trying to get a website up soon to include all these with albums or events and such, but i've been much too lazy.

yea, just keep practicing panning the entire scene, over and over. and if you have a dslr don't be timid with the shutter release, just snap away. the worse that happens is you fill your memory card and have to delete a buncha picture. one problem i ran into though was with the cones, it was SOOOO hard to pan perfectly and get the damn cones out of the way. there was like a 20 foot section i kept trying to get the cars in on that turn.
