Its never too early to start thinking about the next event, especially when its an out of towner.
The SCCA will be headquartered at the El Capitan Resort and Casino and has a block of rooms set aside for us. I believe the charge will be $29.99 a night, plus taxes for single occupancy. If I remember correctly, double occupancy rooms will bump up to $39.99 a night, but I could be wrong. Be sure to ask when you call.
The number is 800-922-2311

Thanks for Posting this up Nick.
Also, one more thing, if you are looking to attend this event, Las Vegas region does not recognize our street tire classing so you will need to sign up in your respective class without any street tire designation.
Furthermore, there is no place to sign up as a NOVICE, so you will need to select the class in which you would run and make a note in the comments that says 'Novice'.
Also, You will pay at the event when you arrive.
Should be a lot of fun,

I'm not all that surprised... the general feeling I get from Reno members is that the event isn't worth the haul down there with all the issues keeping it "legal" vs. keeping it safe. All the fun has been bled out of the event for me.

Lets see. Vegas drivers running over Reno Drivers,
And No tire handicap . sorta suprized we hit ~ 20 from reno. I was thinking hard of skipping rather then driving for last place 2 days in a row. (street tire vs R compuond) I was going to last minute buy the 139$ Avon Ra from tire rack but luckily for my Credit card they are now out of stock. I'de almost cancel now but since i have the hotel registration n stuff done + being lazy guess i'll go. LoL and someone from LV with an STI has 275's on an 8" rim??? probably a wider rim than 8" Should be fun to see.
There's a wicked cool 36 mile dirt road down there. (National forrest land) i know the West end (comes out to 395, via 208 i think it is ?) it is really rough though, as in Bad washboard. (drove down to it 2 weeks ago) The road Shakes everything even at like 8 mph. goes away around at 45 mph .. my guess is that's really bad on 17" rims. shocks and springs too, but those are Wear and tear items right ?? ;)
Anyone have a portable road grader and a truck? anyone else down for some Dirt Driving? Oh yeah that's right, lol i'm the Only Subaru owner in this club who likes to drive on non paved surfaces, that's right!   Gets me laughing every time ! :P
I was kinda bummed that road is so rough my big plan was gonna be drive down on snow tires, take the 30 mile dirt road 'short cut' and switch back to summers for the event. show up with a muddy , dirty car , and save time driving down.
That road may smooth out (think its called 9 mile raven?) a few miles up, but i couldn't handle driving on it for 10 more minutes with how bad it was.
Too bad there are no 16's that would clear the brakes. Cause i found some rally tires that will fit 16" rims ..
Oh wait ... back OT
Why can't you go wrxkid?

I would like to point out that since we are running under Vegas rules there will be no "T" and no novice class for the "north south challenge".
However, this weekend also counts as rounds 6 and 7 for our local region and we will be using normal reno rules.
Therefore if you run in Hawthorne and you are either on street tyres or you are a novice then you need to find me at the event (or post here) and let me know so that I can make the change when I do our results!

Drops work for PAX too you know.
After missing two events, I'll feel like I need to catch up. Nick should get a couple of tens under his belt if the LasVegas Mustang running in ESP doesn't get him. If the karts keep showing up and the boys from Sac continue running up here, I don't see a top ten finish in Pax this year. I'm just not being consistent (sp?) enough.
I watched the LV mustang driver at the SD Pro, and he was putting down some fast times.
IMO we should stop worrying about running on street tyres (just for you, Mike) - and plan to go and do the best you can do, and Have Fun! For many reasons, the out-of-town events are alot of fun. The LV region has some really fun people too!

Not til later. There are only 3 run groups at Hawthorne and everybody is expected to remain on-site all day.
Nick Koan
2007-05-26, 06:50 PM
We actually only had two run groups, and ran a morning then afternoon session. 3 runs, 3 runs, lunch, 3 runs, 3 runs. Morning was fast, but the afternoon just got faster.
I had a lot of fun, but I am beat right now. Right at the end of the day, when I was already starting to feel a little heat exhaustion and minor dehydration coming on, a kart hit a cone right in front of me and Matt. The cone ended up lifting his tires off the pavement and he just slid into the dirt. We were already beat, but now we had to go drag a kart back onto the pavement. What's worse is that the cone ended up wrapped in the front axle so the front wheels weren't turning. I don't think I've ever physically worked so hard at an autocross before in my life.
As for times, I'll have to verify, but I think I was only .2 off a race tire ESP camaro. So, there you have it folks, definitive proof that race tires are only worth .2 seconds on a 90 second course.
I ended up with an 88.8, Matt was running 84.5, Dean 83.5, Mike had an 82.x but it was dirty. I can't remember what his best clean time was. I think everyone else was running while I was working so I don't really recall the times. I think the fastest of the non-karts was a BSP Evo that ran an 81.6.

Man today was fun.
Reno took the trophy again, by .3 seconds. Closest margin ever.
I did worse today compared with yesterday. I took a ride with MikeK and got physically ill. All in all, good times.
Even without the street tire modifier, we won by three tenths of a second average PAX...
All did well.
We think Mike's rear sway is binding, and on the mostly transition course he had a hard time keeping the front not in back.
Debbie won BS and top Ladies PAX. Mark got 2nd in open PAX. Rachel did well, though it appears in all their cases that RX-8s attract cones. :)
Carrie was third in Ladies PAX.
Sue drove much better on day 2 and ended up happy which is good. And is even happier not to be on the "last page" of the PAX results.
Alex is probably driving through dirt as I type on his "short cut" home. He also had cone magnets on his car this weekend and decided on Sunday he wanted to drive the triangle in the Saturday direction. :)
I think Matt was 2nd or third in BS, and as you might have guessed, I beat Mike in SM. He ran away after the event to avoid scoring and I think to pick someone up at SFO.
Matt, Randy and I were out there at the crack of dawn making the day 2 course changes. I think we were both slightly more dead than others after our afternoon work sessions.
One of our new guys who's name now escapes me in a black STI did well also in N-STU and is following Alex through the dirt on the route back. Hope they make it.
That's it for now. I'm beat and need a shower.

Oops we did it again! Reno bringing home the trophy.I'm beat, but I had a ton of fun...Major Props to Reno Region Ladies....Debbie 1st in PAX, Patty 2nd in PAX, Carrie 3rd in PAX (on street tires)...they rocked.
I finished 2nd in BSP both days, but with my ST modifier, I won on saturday at least. As we said Dean, the transitions today favored the race-tire cars, but I think we did quite well. Dean drove like a damn animal, I was quite impressed. I am looking forward to new shoes on the Suby for teh next event...I'm down to slick RE070's after today (Especially after my spin in front of the bus which scored a 8 out of 10 according to the crowd  )

that dirt drive was AWESOME :) Both Dave and I managed fine. We almost made it all the way..
Dave was running really low on gas after we got about 24 miles out, we only had 8 miles to go, but then i came up to a stream going over the road. the water wasn't that deep, like 4 or 5 " , the problem was it went from sand and small gravel to all rocks that were 4-8" diameter. i drove slowly onto it with Dave watching my tires, he told me to back up. Apparently it looked like a rather pointy rock was distorting the tire a LOT . so we just decided to head back from there. the first 4 miles were very very much like Pikes peek. and very very smooth. Nothing like having your car aimed directly at the apex as you slide through it. :)
Oh yeah, the autocross event wasn't too bad either :P LMMFAO . I thought all my runs saturday were clean but it wasn't until i heard Patty on the PA say i was still working on a clean run that i realized that. Sunday I dunno what i did really. I drove really really poorly with my fastest run being a run that only involved 1 cone :) i think my only clean run may have been my DNF .
Guess I liked saturdays course so much i tried to drive it on Sunday :) Such is the life for a noob racer.
Nick Koan
2007-05-27, 11:07 PM
Actually, your DNF wasn't clean. There was some radio chatter about you hitting a cone after a DNF .
Actually, I beat all the Corvettes on race tires in Raw time except Bob Williamson who I think beat me by a tenth or so, so that is clear evidence that street tires are not only ruining autocross, but that they are actually faster than race tires.Did I just hear you say that?!
Awesome job to Dean and Matt and Patty and Carrie, running on street tires on this 80+ second course! While I was awarded the top ladies pax (because LV was not including our street tire modifier), I think once again Patty beats me with the street tire pax. I had times in the 84's both days, but dirty. And with both of those times, I hit those cones early in the run, then thought ("doesn't matter now") and went for banzai runs. Those were the best runs of the weekend for me! (Well, except for when Rachel got her one & only clean run. )
Rachel and I worked corner 6 out in the triangle -- we had a snake, red ants and bees at our station, saw a few people into the dirt (the DSPL car that Nick & Matt also pushed out before the kart went in on Sunday; along with a Miata that backed into the dirt but got himself out) -- got a little sunburned, came home with multiple event shirts due to LVR's ability to upsell; made some new friends; and can't wait till we do it again.
And truly, great job to Reno Region for bringing it home again! -- despite not being able to claim street tyre pax for Reno drivers -- and despite the LV Region bringing 3 fast F125 drivers who took the top 3 pax spots today.

Actually, your DNF wasn't clean. There was some radio chatter about you hitting a cone after a DNF .
 You could have lied to me you know  Ya its more than likely that i hit cones that run, not sure if i had any clean runs on Sunday. I wasn't getting told of cone counts very well (nor were the people who had plenty of clean runs) , which lead me to believe i had more clean runs than i actually did. I'll have to try for cleaner runs next year , and maybe even following the proper course direction ...
First i thought someone changed the course in between runs, " like WTF? Pointer cones at the End of a slalom , that's a first, Oh wait. Crap ... Think i done and got lost here!", then mostly came to a stop to allow that to register, at which point i got moving again!

Last weekend I finally got under the car to regrease my swaybars. The rear bar was so tight that it took all my strength to move it, but the front was worse. I could lay under the car and put my full weight on the end of the swaybar and it still wouldn't budge. No wonder I kept spinning my car. I even spun at the first corner after the start line
All fixed now, but unfortunately all 4 of my perrin endlinks are toast. The crappy spherical bearings on all of them have seized up. Matt, Dean, didn't you guys replace Perrin endlinks with some other brand?

Sounds like my car... last week I slotted my rear swaybar bushings, re-greased 'em, and reinstalled them with some washers in the mounts. Now it swings free and easy. I should probably take a look at the front bar as well, but the car's back at GST for tuning this week.

I built some from components that are nylon raced and have studded ends instead of bolts which appear to be holding up. I actually have a few spare sets if you want to try them. No warranties expressed or implied... Much cheaper than anything out there...

Here's a hint, if all 4 tires have power, you want them *all* touching the ground, *all* the time. I know they think they're being clever somehow, but the 3-wheel motion is dubious at best on light FWD cars, nevermind 3000+ lb AWD EVOs.

An EVO doesn't lift tires on the stock struts at autocross... so Allon's car is lifting the tire because of the shocks he's got. i.e. He's (un)intentionally making the car do it, even in AS. Plus, a big beefy front swaybar would do wonders for that tire lift, and that's perfectly legal in AS.

WRXs sure do, and I think STIs and evos might, especially with insanely large tires to keep the outsides stuck to the ground. A front sway may help, but is not going to eliminate all torsional forces on the chassis under cornering loads, and neither will dampers.
Any front weight biased strut suspension car is likely to exhibit unweighting of the inside rear... Take a look at the Hondas in STS or former Neon race series... Don't you think that if they could, those guys would eliminate the inner rear lift?

Allon was on stock struts at hawthorne, his aftermarket struts did not ship to him in time. They like the rotation the car has with that setup.

Dude its an Evo its a FWD bais AWD system that can and does send 100% power to just the front 2 wheels. For an STI that is 50:50 to 1/3 Front and 2/3s rear, that would be aweful, but since he was killing it , and since its a FWD bias system, i would imagine that's actually pretty damn clever indeed.
Allon was telling me he sent in those struts into BILSTEIN and had them revalved to his specs. I don't know as much about car setup as the rest. But i know that car can send 100% power to the front wheels only, it seemed he was off throttle when he was lifting up the rear tires too and they VERY quickly sat down as he got on the gas. first day he won by .6 seconds (with tire pax) and 1.5 the next day. (again with tire pax)

I've never seen an EVO lift a tire at an autocross. I've never seen a WRX do it either, as far as I can remember. I've seen all sorts of FWD cars do it, but that's because they've been setup to, and there is a reduction in rear traction that helps the car turn, though I would think there may also be some issues with consistency in that situation, but the lap times seem to indicate for a FWD car it can be the fastest setup.
If Allon is lifting on stock struts, it's the first time I've seen it. And I can't imagine his driving is smooth if he's able to do that. Granted, his lap times were fast when compared to the rest of the competitors... but remember who we're comparing them against... a group of drivers that get absolutely trounced anytime anyone that's at all nationally competitive shows up.
The STI never changes it's bias. It's fixed by the mechanicals in the center diff. All you can do is change the allowed speed differential before lockup occurs. If the EVO can actually route the torque split, then is much more advanced than the STI system, and I was under the impression that the full-blown AYC system never made it into the US spec EVOs. Either way, so what if the center diff can send 100% power to the front tires... I'd rather have 100% of my power going to the ground through all 4 tires rather than just the fronts. It's twice as much traction!
So anyway, if the tripod setup seems to work for them, good for them I guess. But I'd much rather have a car that corners flat, and allows me to use that fancy AWD drivetrain (and do so w/o abusing the differentials at every corner). If you wanna ride on just the front two tires, get a CRX or something.

I've never seen an EVO lift a tire at an autocross. I've never seen a WRX do it either, as far as I can remember.
The Evans' WRX (and all DS WRXs as far as I know) lifted inside rears about 5-6".
The Evans' WRX (and all DS WRXs as far as I know) lifted inside rears about 5-6".As did mine pre mods and on DMS's with street springs and Debbie's did as well as I recall...
Even with my coilovers and race springs, my WRX unweighted enough to allow the rear diff to unlock.
Given the weight distribution of these cars and stock spring rates, the only geometry I can imagine them not lifting is if the front corners reach bump stops prior to the rears reaching full extension. I would much rather lift an inside rear than the transition from spring to bump stop given the choice...

Allon's turn-ins this weekend were some of the most violent I've ever seen. But, in a weird way, it seemed smooth and in control.
As far as I can remember, he only lost traction once and when that happened he just gave up and went back in.
As did mine pre mods and on DMS's with street springs and Debbie's did as well as I recall...
Correct, on stock shocks & fsb, race tires I think.
Allon also has an aggressive driving style that promotes wheel lift, too.

Well, I found some awesome in-car footage of this year's Saturday course at Hawthorne. That crazy WRX driver Rasmus posted it up  damn his first run is nuts  Anyway, gives you a real good look at the course. I sure had fun with it. You even see Starter Dean right at the beginning.

That was a pretty good look at the course. I even saw some of my tyre marks from my many spins
