I think the crowds would be just as bad today if the events weren't as regulated as they are... it used to be people would just show up and hang out on course... now you have to buy tickets and there's marshals and stuff looking out for crowd saftey. G'damn pussies. (That's for you JC ;))

Spectators used to be super crazy though. I mean, in some service areas (esp. in Finland) the mechanics would sometimes find fingers from all the people trying to touch the cars as they drove by.
