If it is acceptable but needs to be muffled, a straight through can of some shape muffler and some fab work will deliver for cheap.

You could also drop the mid pipe for kicks.

If you don't like the sound, you have to look for UEL options.

That's probably the best idea. I see why you guys keep this old timer around :P

Yeah, someone needs to keep the rocking chair from flying away.

yea also u get a lil faster spool with after market uel headers as well

And spooling those pistons on a non-turbo car is important! :P

But seriously, I was under the impression that EL headers spool a turbo better, otherwise why would anyone bother making EL turbo headers?

lol my bad wasnt reading ahahah well my buddy put el on his 04 sti and he lost atleast 100 2 200 rpm of spool but then again he lives by the cobb ap like 70 % of subie owners do

I wonder if the EL headers increase lag but help high-end. W/o seeing a before/after dyno graph, it's hard to know.

Additionally, there are so many factors aside from the simply EL vs UEL aspect that would also affect spool. It could be likely EL headers hurt spool just because it means the exhaust gas cools more down the longer path... meaning that the EL headers should probably use a smaller diameter pipe than the shorter UEL headers to keep up velocity and protect the spool properties.

I would like to see some non-turbo header performance gain numbers.

Jeikun 2009-06-12 05:38 PM

I dont know exactly, but I do know that you lose a few horsepower on a UEL over an EL.

100_Percent_Juice 2009-06-12 05:55 PM

^Are you talking about turbo or N/A engines?

moose 2009-06-12 06:18 PM

From what I understood, you don't lose power with uel, you just don't get as much as the equal length header.

Kevin M 2009-06-12 06:31 PM

UEL vs. EL is less important than good collector design, which pretty much all the aftermarket stuff has.

That's why when you switch to aftermarket UELs, you don't lose as much power. Or, as Moose (I'm sorry, I dont remember your name) said, you don't end up removing as much available power from the motor.

And we are talking about N/A motors.
