No alcohol either if I recall correctly.

I think the Air Force wears black tees under the uniform blouse actually. White is for dress Unies. Socks for boots technically have to be black, but I don't think that one really matters. Really nice bot socks kickass though. I'll see if I can find any of the pairs I used to have for mine, they ruled. They were really thick around the ankle and heel, thin on top of the foot, and had like an elastic spandex kinda thing circling the arch, they felt awesome and kept your feet both warm and dry in winter, and cool and dry in summer.

Since he's in a muslim country, he can't have anything remotely close to porn (even like Maxim and Stuff is off limits) or alcohol, but most other stuff is okay, especially food. Anything food-wise is good, especially pre-packaged junk food. Local and national papers go over well too overseas.

Good luck.:D

murphy 2005-03-13 05:01 PM

ok all new news....I'm finally in Afghanistan..and the base isn't too bad..large room (yes no tent city for me) It pretty much looks like fallon near the 1/4 mile strip. but hot like phoenix. I should be going to the fire bases starting next week or late this week..they are still getting hit every week. but I'll be fine. going to eat now hungry..

MikeSTI 2005-03-13 07:06 PM

just dont forget your in the desert with people that dont like you!!!!

otherwise do you have air conditioning? Stay Safe :D

qksubi 2005-03-13 07:46 PM

Keep the balls powdered and your head down

murphy 2005-03-15 06:53 PM

hahah actually I already have the gold bond powder...and it works well. It now apperas that I'm on the second rotation out so I'll be here for 30 days then out for 60..repeat...but its ok because just 2 cycles and I'm on leave for 2 weeks.. The 30 days here I'll be pulling duty like watching the hodgies pull work detail, load up fuel trucks for the fire bases and working the tank farm..not to bad.
OH yes the room I'm in while here does have AC but not much good that will do when its 125 deg.. It well be hard to send pics home on the net because of sensorship and approval shit..so when a memory stick is full I'll send it home downloaded then sent back..

take care all.

MikeK 2005-03-15 09:12 PM

Can you come back to the US during the 2 weeks leave?

 that would be sweet, but I think Europe would be as far as they would let him go :(

murphy 2005-03-19 01:23 AM

yup I can come home, its actually suggested to go home. I can go anywhere I want really. I've got a few invites to romania. that would be cool I'd like to see draculas castle, but I think I will come home. The good thing is if I do go home they pay for it. That and my leave clock starts only when I get in the US. So if it takes a few days to get home the better..14 days could turn into 21 really easy.

murphy 2005-04-20 10:14 AM

update time...I'm at my fire base. will be here for the next 60 days..seems ok at right now. It sees some action but not to worry. This place is getting hot now..its like 95 now. I can't imagine another 40 deg. added but I will see it soon enough. not much else going on really if it does I'll let you know..take care all.

Good to hear that you're doing okay!

I saw a few weeks back that we lost a CH-47 in Afganistan... anyone from Reno involved? :(

murphy 2005-04-21 09:26 AM

The crash your talking about a few weeks ago...they are part of our task force (storm) but none from reno were involved. try this for a dry heat..it got up to 145 last year here where I'm at. I'll need more powder for my fishing gear.

What're you talking about? You don't have to worry till about 220 to 240... then your oil starts to break-down. Oh wait, we're not talking about engine temps are we?

ok time for an update...pics this time.

dknv 2005-04-27 07:47 AM

Good pics, Chris. The mountains in the background of the first pic look pretty scenic.

Why is the flag backwards on your sleeve, btw?

murphy 2005-04-27 07:53 AM

I have no Idea whay the Army does that but that is how they are worn on the uniform..seems odd to me as well.

Nick Koan 2005-04-27 08:08 AM

That is actually the way the flag is supposed to be sewn onto things if I recall correctly.

EDIT:
Did some google searching, and it seems there is no such national law or edict or anything else perscribing how or it what direction to place the American flag. The Boy Scouts have the stars on the left on the right shoulder, and the military has the stars on the right on the right shoulder.

Simply, its just the way the military chose to display the flag.

AtomicLabMonkey 2005-04-27 08:10 AM

Isn't that the correct way to do it? I thought the idea was that the stars were always facing forwards, like the wind is blowing a real flag. So if you have a flag patch on your left side, the stars are on the left of the patch ( your front), and if you have a patch on your right side, the stars are on the right of the patch (still your front). :?:

That's correct. On uniforms and vehicles the flag should be "flying" with the stars on the leading edge. So flags on the right side look "backwards". That's why I mentioned that the flag is wrong on those Hemi police cars in the other thread.

What I'm more curious about are the 3 gentlemen with folding stock AK-74s. I know the AK is probably the best rifle for such a dusty and dirty environment, but I didn't know our military started issuing 'em!

MattR 2005-04-27 08:50 AM

Sweet , looks a little like AZ.

Whose that guy in the bushes in the 4th picture, he's making me nervous

I would guess they were confiscated, not issued by US army.

I didn't think our soldier were allowed to use confiscated weapons... do they have to use confiscated ammo too?

Holy crap! I guess the sandstorms you see in movies actually happen over there.  Hope you don't get caught out in one of those.

murphy 2005-04-27 08:09 PM

holy RED X storm...hahaha... funny you say that but I do have a pic of a sand storm rolling in on us...

Kevin M 2005-04-27 08:43 PM

Heh, I was going to say something but I figured Austin was already fixing them.

Austin, please don't bring us a shitstorm of C-C moderators eating our faces for stealing their bandwidth.

Nick Koan 2005-07-05 01:04 PM

Glad to hear you are alive and well.

Enjoy your R&R.

Dean 2005-07-05 01:04 PM

Was anyone in your unit involved in that Shinook that went down? Glad to hear you are OK and getting some "rest"... :)

murphy 2005-07-05 01:08 PM

forgot the temp has been ungodly...the army calculates the temp by how hot it is woking in the sun...well it has broken 150 several times...it was about 130 in the shade... No no reno birds were involved in the shoot down..and they have found another survivor from the crash. I will say that no one has died from reno (yet and I hope none do) but our birds have been shot to shit and many have been downed. its pretty "hot" in Afg.

Yikes! Hang in there man. I've got some more HYBRID tunes saved for you.

Glad to hear all is well with you over there. Please stay "cool".

tysonK 2005-07-05 05:44 PM

Sounds like you need an intercooler in your flak jacket!

Stay safe.
