Sorry, I'm tired and grumpy. 2 days of 5am load test, and not sleeping well anyway.
No rush on the drive, I'm on plane this afternoon. Acording to the Dell web site, you have an on-board NIC. |

OK, a second document says "present only on systems with built-in network capabilities" IT should be right next to/above the set of USB ports closest to the card slots.
I can leave one one for you at the house. I'll PM you where. |

While you are at it, the keys to the Rex also please :D
So I'm gonna see if I can pick up a router from some comp supply store, and an ethernet cable? That's the kind I need yeah? Actually I have one of those that I use for mah Xbox Lizzive. |

I hate those.
|
Do you already have DSL?
People are going to disagree, but if you ended up with XP, a router would be nice, but wait until they are on sale for $2.99 after rebate and use the XP SP 2 firewall for now. The DSL modem should have a cable, but I'll leave one with the card. Driver CD is there as well. And don't get Greedy :) Rex keys will not be with it. If you don't have all this figured out by monday, I can help since Cody is a slacker. :P What kind of IT guy doesn't have a spare Ethernet card lying around. :) |
Please note:
If you attempt to update a fresh install of XP on a broadband connection w/o a hardware firewall, chances are you'll get a virus before SP2 is installed. |
Actually, when do you get off work today Jonny? I'll trade you for a ride to the airport?
I know Scott. I just didn't want him to spend more $$$s. Cheapest one this week is $30 which is a rip off. Cody, was it XP Home w/ SP2 by any chance? Hell, there will be an SP2 CD with the NIC as well. |

Sure Dean, when do you need to go? I get of at 4 or 4:30. You can get a ride in my beast (hahahaha, I can't not laugh when calling my car that).

Haha. This thread is funny. It's overcomplicated, but funny  |
Yes, well, I'm sorry I don't have extra parts for computers at my house. I leave my work at work...
I would have even used the NIC from my desktop, but alas it's onboard. It was XP Home, SP1 according to the writing on the CD. Jonnny, you'll want to install the SP2 from the CD Dean is giving you before you ever even go online. SP2 will install a software firewall so you can then do a Windows Update and then you can download AV and install it. Then you should be good. |
Sweet cheese.

Maybe I'm not a true geek. :(
Honestly I would have done more, like at least download SP2 for him, but between all the issues we had (and time spent playing GT4), it got late fast. |
Cody I have your number so if I can get online tonight I'll call you if I have issues. But I know the SP2 thing is first and foremost, whatever that is. Actually on second thought I'll probably just call you anyway because mostly likely I'll lose my brain when I attempt to do this. It's been a rough, rough day.
|
I have a date tonight. Don't you dare call me.
:P Call me tomorrow and I can totally help. SP2 is a service pack for Windows XP that includes a software firewall which should protect your system enough for you to do Windows updates and install AV without incident. |
Hhahaha, I forgot about that actually. Remember, hit that shit.
I can get SP2 from Windows Update or whatever on the Windows site? |
You can, but some say you could pick up a virus if you go online without a firewall (hardware or software). You're better off downloading it and burning it to CD with a computer that is running AV (which Dean said he'll do) and installing it from the CD.

Well Cody forgot to mention he was drinking and racing last night

I already have SP2, and the two AV packages I listed earlier on a CD for you. I still recommend you use the CE one from SBC if you have DSL. Just go here after you get connected.
http://sbc.software.yahoo.com/ysftc/...lcome?flow=yop Must use IE to access which is BS, but the SW doesn't require it after that. Thier security suite has AV, and Spyware tools which I reccomend, and use. Pop up blocker (for IE which I don't), and parental controls which I probably should use for myself all for free. |

Yah, Dean's HD sucked. Jonny's HD sucked only slightly less, and I can't drive in GT4 to save my life.

Sweet first post from the new computerrrrr.
|
Cool. What did you end up doing? Housemate or whatever had a router didn't he?
Where are those cut and pastes of the drive info? |
Laff@Dean. Congrats Jonny!
