you guys are good.
answer... i had an issue because we flared the fenders so the stock fender liners didnt fit anymore and with all the ice racing we are doing i need to keep everything clean(wiring, engine bay, etc). BEFORE http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/well_liner_1.jpg AFTER http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/well_liner_2.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/well_liner_3.jpg Justin |
Those look suhweet!!!
|
Good idea turning your radiator shroud into a fender liner.
|
can you take a picture of the layouts that you used to cut those out... i need to make some, or can you give me some tips about how to make some fender liners like the ones you did.
|
Your fenders are completely different than a GC, his layouts wouldn't help much.
|
i know.. i just want to see how he did it, because when i try to make a layout it tends to look really screwed up.. i just want something that i can base the making of mine on..

Your whole fenderliners blew out? what did that feel like to have those things smacking around under your car?
|
^One of mine blew out on the way to elko last year. It happened really quick and sounded like I hit a big piece of plastic.
|
I lost one near Sacramento on I5. Thought I had a tire blow out from the sound so I stopped to check it out. It took me like 5 minutes to figure out what had caused the noise after I found all 4 tires intact.

i thoughti ran over someones tire that blew out

After driving on the new BC Racing coilvers for a few days i realized i absolutely needed an alignment and corner balance. We have great local guy, Jeff The Aligment Guy www.thealignmentguy.com ...who did an awesome job. The handling is night and day difference. The typical subaru understeer is basically gone and a bit of oversteer is definitely there which is what i want.
I'm glad that i also got the car corner balanced while i was there because the corner weights were way out of whack prior to bringing it in. We had a few issues with front caster and rear toe because in the front the ALK i have needs to be tweaked a bit and in the rear one of the lateral links is different so it wouldnt give him the toe that he wanted. So i need to fix those two things then bring her back in to get buttoned up. I have an advanced driving control clinic next saturday and it couldnt come sooner..totally stoked to get this new setup on the track. http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/corner_balance.jpg Corner balance numbers after. http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...ance_specs.jpg Justin www.grimmspeed.com |
as far as the fenderliner template, first i used a cardboard piece and then started trimming that away until i got the correct shape. then copied the shape onto the thin aluminum and bolted her in. really didnt take that long actually.

He doesn't. He has a line of BC Tuning springs.

finally got some more updates on this project...been so busy shipping all your parts out, havent had time to post pics up.
waited 4 weeks to get this from titan motorsports but it finally came. sparco 345 suede racing wheel. http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/sparco_wheel_2.jpg ditched the wrx seats for these corbeau cr-1's. i had bought some sparco seats locally but they didnt fit me well at all so used these instead. they are alot narrower than the sparco so they fit nicely. they are SUPER low which is my only complaint...i even got the wrx style brackets from corbeau which are suppose to higher. http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/sparco_seats_1.jpg piece by piece i'm starting to get that fugly tan interior out. hit up the local junkyard and found the rear door cards and door sills in black/grey. http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...rds_grey_1.jpg this is where it sits right now. complete vinyl wrap. car is going to be all white base layer with dark red metallic logos. i'm really pumped to get this project done because its going to totally transform the looks of the L. http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...progress_1.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...progress_2.jpg working with our tuner right now. we got it alot better than it was...just having wastegate issues right now so i can fully tune it right now. the power to weight ratio is definitely amazing compared to the wrx. Sparco wheel FTW. I got that bitch, and it's fantastic!

I've done nothing but chuckle to myself every time I get in my car since I got that seat...
|
haha nice mpreziv. right now i could really use that slit in the seat actually. turns out we are going to have to get a fixed back seat anyways so these seats have to go..arg.
more updates here. We finally got all the white vinyl laid. starting to take form. http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...progress_3.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...progress_4.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...progress_5.jpg next to do is get the dark red metallic graphics laid over the white base layer. |
Lookin' GOOD!

Car looks good, white+gc=awesome. Dumb question though, why vinyl? Why not just paint it? Is it more durable?
|
^ I think it's because it's cheaper and some what as durable.
|
originally it was because we were going to rally the car and the vinyl would hold up better and be easier to fix small spots. however, now the car is a track only car so the only bonus would be that its easy to change out sections.
its definitely not cheaper than paint lol |
Oh shows what I know.
|
http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...progress_5.jpg
Is there a big gap under that scoop or is it just the lighting? |
big gap. its because its an L hood with a wrx scoop. just temporary until i get the fmic on. nice catch though
|
Well that being said, the car looks really good. You said there is going to be some decals right? I think it will break up the white nicely.
That car doesn't seem to have a ton of room for airflow to a front mount. Is there going to be some modification to the front to provide more air flow while still letting the radiator get what it needs or am I just talking crazy. |

cheaper than average paint. cost for the vinyl is typically around 1500.
We finished up the complete vinyl wrap on and took her to the LaCrosse, WI Subaru meet. everything you see is vinyl, including the white. Thanks to the local guys for taking these pics! http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...reza_lax_1.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...reza_lax_2.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...reza_lax_3.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...reza_lax_4.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...reza_lax_5.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...reza_lax_6.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...reza_lax_7.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...reza_lax_8.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...reza_lax_9.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...eza_lax_10.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...eza_lax_11.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...eza_lax_12.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/...eza_lax_13.jpg |
Next up is to get rid of those wrx brakes and powerslot rotors. I didnt want to ubgrade all of the hubs yet so i had to source 04 STi Brembos so they would be a direct bolt-on(almost). The fronts went right on without an issue but the rears needed some help. I had the kartboy rear 2 pot adapters..i'm not sure if these are meant just for the subaru rear 2 pots calipers or if they are made for the rear brembos as well as i had to mold the plate the bracket bolted onto to get it to fit.
Stopping has definitely improved a ton. The only downfall is that they weigh ALOT. looks like i'm going to have to get some lighter wheels to combat the heavier brakes. Currently i'm using the oem pads but hope to be upgrading soon. http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/brembos_1.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/brembos_2.jpg http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/brembos_3.jpg Front WRX Powerslot vs. Front Brembo http://www.grimmspeed.com/project_l/brembos_4.jpg Justin |
OMG so many subarus /drool
|
looking good, keep up the good work.
|
just curious, why is your name grimmspeed? you do alot of buisness with them ?
|
Phil, that IS grimmspeed ;)
|
So, the answer to your question would probably be yes
|
Awesome looking car!
I'm a lil confused though, If you already got STI Brembos on there Why the plan for an 05 Hub Conversion? Do you expect Hub Failure in your car from your current car usage plan ? (ie its known that after lots of track days the stander 100X5 hubs fail?) |
Unless I missed something, he said he *didn't* want to upgrade hubs. Doing it on a non 6MT/R180 car is a nightmare when it comes to axles and all that fun stuff, and doesn't make sense unless you're doing the rest of the drivetrain to go with it; replacing a few wheel bearings/hubs (because they're wear items on the 5x114 hubs, too, on a track car) still puts you ahead fiscally over a hub swap, custom axles, new suspension, new wheels, etc.
Plus, one of the big benefits for hub swaps is wheel availability in wider sizes, which you can't take advantage of on a GC/GM without major bodywork or non-performance-oriented camber. |
I'm not sure "major bodywork" would be out of line for this car. ;)
