Later in life when you have a different outlook you might say "hey all my friends have object [B] and I would like one too."

If that's the genesis of this whole conversation, I'd suggest growing up before doing anything swap or trade-up related. My waste-of-money car is for me, because I enjoy racing it at the track. Building a bugeye STi "because your friends all have STis" smacks of street racer type one-up-manship retardation.

Agreed. The sliver of justification I present for spending extra money on your car beyond the cost of trading up is to have something you wouldn't otherwise be able to have.

Like many things on this forum I understand how that could have been misunderstood. The reason for the swap isnt because everyone has an sti, because none of us do. It also had nothing to do with street racing, because we dont do that either. Its merely because he is a fellow wrenchhead and car enthusiast. We have all been talking about getting into autoX and he has done some racing before and figured he would like to jump back into it. He has been looking for another car and I merely brought up the idea "hey why dont you just do a swap on the wagon". So thats how it started, to see if he can have a cool modded wagon that he already likes for a decent price. and as this thread has proven its not cost effective. so the idea was throw out way back at post 10.
