I've been listening to Vampire Weekend's self titled album and the new(ish) one from City and Colour.

I hear a couple of their tracks on Sirius 26 a lot.

I'm on the fence about them.

If any of you like Underground/Local Hip Hop, some guys I make beats for and are a part of are putting on a show next Thursday on the 10th at Studio on 4th St at 7pm. A lot of local hip hop artists will be there including my boys, Dangerous Minds, Apprentice, Rameses, Emic and Locust, Element, Jovie, Ray Ray, and also some local graf artists doing some painting on site. The show is called 360: A Full Circle View Into Local Hip Hop. If you like hip hop it is definitely worth checking out. It is going to be a positive vibe show, not to mention my little brother and one of his teachers are putting it on by themselves with no help. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to pm me. Not a lot of people know where Studio on 4th St is except for that it is on 4th St. Hope to see you there.

I'm really excited to hear what InnerPartySystem's CD will sound like. From the few songs posted on their myspace page I really like them.

Found out the show I wrote about above is For Sure Thursday April 10th at Studio on 4th St. at 432 E. 4th St. at 7pm. I am told it is near where Valley meets 4th St. Near the Nevada Boxing Gym. Most of you guys will/should be at the meet, but if you like hip hop it might be worth it.

Atmosphere's album came out last week when I wasn't paying attention

So, bought it at lunch today. Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons You Paint That Shit Gold
So, this album feels like a significant departure to me. Its still undeniably Ant and Slug, but its a side rarely seen, and the whole album is focused on it very cohesively. The beats are more organic and melancholic. A lot of keys, winds and strings, that looking at the credits aren't sampled. There is a guest appearance by Tom Waits on the album and to me that describes the whole album. The feeling I get when listening to the whole album is that Ant and Slug listened to a lot of Tom Waits albums.

Not that that's a bad thing, its actually a very good thing, unless you were expecting a more straight up hip-hop album.

I bought the new Atmosphere the day it came out and haven't stopped listening to it since. It is in the CD player in the car and on all ipods. It is very different than the usual, but definitely still love it like the old ones. I have 16 total albums of his only and a couple of his side projects also. If there is anything you haven't heard let me know and I can bring it to the meet when work allows me to make it. I also have a lot of local hip-hop artists if you are interested in hearing something new.

I'm not diggin the new atmos, although I haven't enjoyed him much since the lucy ford days. I've kind of grown out of my hip hop tastes, although I still jump on anything defjux/cage/el-p and I never get tired of little brother.

cage should have a new one out sometime soon too.

From what I've heard so far the new Black Keys album is awesome.

Just got the new Atmosphere as well, I'm digging it :)

Kavid 2008-05-02 06:27 AM

I'm still digging on the new Atmos album. I don't know if you guys like MURS, but he is supposed to come out with a new album early summer called MURS For President, so hopefully in the next month or so I'll see it. Finally got the new Living Legends album also and I'm pretty impressed with it. If you guys like local artists Element or MetaPhysical from Element, we are doing a show with them on May 17th, at the Loose Moose at 9pm. I think the Loose Moose is near Kings Row and McCarran intersection in that shopping center. It's actually Meta's birthday I believe. If you dig hip hop, you should check it out. Also check out Canto I on myspace, we did a show with them and they are from Reno also. They definitely have some talent.

Atmosphere just came out with another album this week. It is Sad Clown Bad Spring, I think it is #12 of the series. I've only seen it at Fifth Element dot com. It is just another short cd of like 5-6 songs but probably worth getting if you are like myself and own a majority of the Sad Clown Series. Mine's on the way so I'll let you know. I think Sad Clown 13 is in the Deluxe Edition of when life gives you lemons and is a DVD.

Nick Koan 2008-05-03 08:37 AM

I picked up #12 on iTunes earlier this week. Its pretty good. More like when life gives you lemons than the other sad clown ones I've heard (which is now 9-12). Good stuff.

Nick Koan 2008-05-03 08:42 AM

and yeah, I think "when life gives you lemons" is my album of the year so far. It gets better on every listen.

I couldn't agree with you more. The first listen I thought it was OK, and after every time I listened to it, I loved it more and more. Album of the year for sure, let's see if anyone beats him for the spot in the next 6 or so months! Glad to hear the #12 is good, I was kind of worried it would be like the 9-11 that I liked about 2 songs on each. I tend to not pick up music on itunes, only use it to load and unload music from the pod. Do they copyright protect their music like napster?! I like to burn discs to listen to in the car on the way to and from work and to do that with music on napster, we had to convert it and strip the copyright protection off and it was a pain to do that to all of the music we downloaded.

Nick Koan 2008-05-04 08:13 PM

Yeah, I'll buy EPs and stuff off of iTunes but generally not whole albums. There is protection against copying on some of the files but you can burn them to CD no problem (if they are iTunes plus there is no drm but it is watermarked with the account they are bought under).

I've started buying some through amazon lately. They have a good selection, same price and no drm.

I'm going to miss ANOTHER meet this week, my hip hop group Dangerous Minds' practice conflicts with it lately on Thursdays. We have our next show this coming Saturday, May 17th, 9pm at the Loose Moose Saloon right on Kings Row and McCarran. We are opening up for a friend of ours and his group Element. It is our friend Meta's birthday from Element and their tour date just happens to be here this weekend. As soon as this show is done our practice will be an different days so I will be able to make the meets hopefully weekly. If you like different hip hop, check it out, otherwise I'll see you in a couple Thursdays'

I just recorded a new tune using a new effects box that I bought. It has 3 separate electric violin parts with the middle one being heavy distortion. Have a listen and let me know what you think. Click on "Cry of the Behemoth"

I like it, I think it sounds good! I'm into the melodic guitars and most intrument sounds in general mostly because I make beats. I wish I could play an instrument! I only do in software programs and that's cheating. You don't even have to know how to read music then.

doubleurx 2008-05-24 09:36 AM

Thanks Kavid. What software do you use? I use Sonar HS 6 XL.
