I'm just glad it was a Cavalier. I'd cry if somebody did that to a Subaru.

Don't read any tech forums on RS25.com, ever.

LOL

Or LegacyCentral.org and the infamous coffee cup mod.

At least that wasn't on the pressure side.

I'm thinking that Cav is staged for the internet, though.

Not a forum fail, but quite the track day fail.

"OH MY GOD"

Tahoe C5 2011-06-10 04:15 PM

This is a poor example of a track day event. I don't know who the sponser was/is but the people behind the k-wall could have very easily been killed or injured. The lack of safety equipment of the people exiting the cars was astonishing. I was waiting for the next group of cars to come through that corner hot and take out all the good samaratins. I've never been to an track day where at the very least you needed a helmet. WTF!

Oh god my eyes.

Its okay, after the forum beat him up he said he'd replace the nuts with spacers instead (like that is supposed to fix the problem).

Either way... that problem will fix itself the first pothole he hits at speed.

I'll leave this here. Thanks for sharing Austin.

I was kinda hoping he'd die in the fire... you know, Darwin at work and all...

Nick Koan 2013-04-29 10:50 PM

"Quick, once the engine turns over the flames will go out!"

sybir 2013-04-30 08:27 AM

There not enough facepalms.

A1337STI 2013-04-30 09:29 AM

i was expecting to hear happy birthday when he was trying to blow out his "candle"

if turning over the motor is the correct response for it being on fire, why didn't he try to turn it over some more when he was on fire.

and wow..

Jalopnik has an interview with the kid (warning, some pictures of the kids burns)

One of the interesting things, is that there is some logic (maybe) on keeping the engine cranking after a fire.

Quote:

Well my supervisor at work specifically told me that if the carburetor ever caught on fire, just kill fuel and the spark and to keep on cranking so the fire would get ducked back into the motor so that's what I did and it didn't work. (The fuel pump) was still going momentarily because I was freaking out and I accidentally hit the switch and when I realized it was going I immediately turned it off and tried cranking it again and that's when the starter locked up on me
Shows what I know.

sybir 2013-04-30 02:33 PM

Eh, carb fires are counterintuitive - and that wasn't a carb fire, that was "gas all over the place lit up". That's not going to be sucked back in.

I can tell you that I'd have been thinking about the fuel source next to the open flame a lot earlier than he was......

And, you know, had an extinguisher next to me when test firing out of a gas tank. What's the worst that could happen? I blame Steve for my constant attention to that detail.

This.

The first step of dealing with a carb fire is recognizing the difference between the fuel in the carb burning, and fuel that's been sprayed all over the garage burning.

At least the kid has learned:

Quote:

Well first off, I will have a fire extinguisher or 2 nearby.
Second off I'm going to pull the car outside and put it in the street.
Third, i will make sure the gas tank is in the back of the car
Fourth, I'll have exhaust manifolds on it so it won't be shooting flames.
Not so sure about the second item, but 1, 3 and 4 are all fantastic ideas. Also, maybe not use an open plastic gas can and a garden hose to feed the carb.

sperry 2013-04-30 04:14 PM

I never understood the idea of trying to turn an engine over before everything is completely buttoned up. The chances of screwing something up are high enough with a 1st start... why make it 1000 times riskier by trying that shit without a working fuel system or exhaust? Unless you really want to start over rebuilding the engine (or the whole car), I guess.

A1337STI 2013-05-01 08:39 AM

any chance he paints some flames on his car after its all finishes? :)

too soon?

ScottyS 2013-05-01 01:26 PM

bahahaha
