Yeah, the triple wing was on their first unveiling, but it doesn't really pop out. Its a strange beast. McLaren also has the triple wing thing going too, although even less noticeable.

RE: the new Spyker, I forgot to attach this quote to my post:

"We trialled the very bright colour in the first three tests of the year. Whilst the bright orange was a very distinctive colour when you saw it in front of you in the garage or on the track, the colour didn't transfer well when filmed," commented team principal Colin Kolles. "It's important for the Spyker brand that the colour is uniformally represented by all media and we're confident this will be the case with the new colour scheme."

MikeK 2007-03-06 04:16 PM

They should have gone with 5 wings

Super Aguri debuted their car this morning.

I just finished watching practice for Melbourne. This is going to be a great season! And Lewis Hamilton, wow!

Also, is it just me, or is the practice countdown timer in the exact worst possible location on the screen for on-board shots?

MPREZIV 2007-03-16 06:52 AM

Like everyone said, the white dot wasn't visible enough:

http://images.gpupdate.net/large/70630.jpg

The white line is neat-o, but I'll bet they move to a big red dot. They should just suck it up and use the red ring around the tire.

tysonK 2007-03-27 11:56 AM

I liked the white dot so unassuming.

Nick Koan 2007-03-27 03:19 PM

I like the white ring too. What'll also be interesting, is that it'd be easily visible to the other drivers. The white dot was only useful if the camera was able to zoom in on it in the pits, all other times it was completely useless.

Kevin M 2007-03-27 07:23 PM

I heard Ralph mention a rumor that Bridgestone mentioned that stuff during development, but when Bernie found out that is was how Champ Cars do it, he refused to do anything like they do. Unsubstantiated probably, but certainly plausible.

Looks like we are going with the in-groove white stripe.

I like the stripes, but at the same time, they are a little odd looking.

I have a feeling they will be reconsidered after we see them in the race.

Joeyy 2007-03-28 02:33 PM

Do we know if the teams can run a combination of the tires or if all four have to be the same?

Nick Koan 2007-03-28 02:35 PM

I believe all four have to be the same. I vaguely remember them mentioning something like that in one of the Australia broadcasts.

sperry 2007-03-30 10:56 AM

Not really an F1 2007 post... more of an F1 2008 post:

Traction Control just got the (re)ban.

Quote:

Traction control banned in 2008
30 March 2007

The FIA has banned the use of traction control in Formula One from 2008 onwards. The change in regulation has been backed by all the teams and by the FIA, who has already taken action to cut the use of advanced technology in the sport in a bid to improve the racing.

The governing body's council met earlier this week and approved of the ban to traction control, which had originally been permitted in 2001.

The new rules state: "No car may be equipped with a system or device which is capable of preventing the driven wheels from spinning under power or of compensating for excessive throttle demand by the driver.

"Any device or system which notifies the driver of the onset of wheel spin is not permitted."
What I like is that technically, a clutch is now illegal since it's "a system or device which is capable of preventing the driven wheels from spinning under power".

Gas pedal, too, and ears (since they warn you of wheelspin).

I'm pretty sure in an F1 car you can't hear the onset of wheelspin from the cockpit... not with the radio/hearing protection earpieces the driver's wear, plus the helmet, plus the *insane* volume of the motor.

Recognizing wheelspin is done by noticing the discrepancy between engine rpm and acceleration. If the motor is screaming, and your eyes are still round... the wheels are spinning.

I was just joking; racing tires don't make much noise when they let go anyways ;)

By your argument, eyes are now illegal :p

That's only if you consider eyes to be a device that aides the driver, and not part of the driver himself.

...damn, F1 is about to get all sorts of existential!

McLaren debuted a new front wing today.

sperry 2007-04-30 09:42 AM

Re. Tarded.

At least, that's how it looks. I wonder how it'll work.

Nick Koan 2007-04-30 10:01 AM

de la Rosa ran today both with and without, and thinks there is a minor improvement. It sounds, though, like there is a small chance they won't use it.

Quote:

The team ran the MP4-22 with and without the new design to evaluate its effectiveness, as Pedro de la Rosa set the third fastest time.

Sources have suggested that the team were impressed with the new wing during straightline testing with it in Menorca last week and, although preliminary impressions were good in Barcelona today, further work will be conducted on it for the remainder of the week.

"We did some work on the aerodynamics, continuing the work from Menorca and there is a small improvement," de la Rosa told autosport.com. "Fernando will try other aero stuff to see how things are tomorrow. It was a satisfactory day. It is a small improvement and every bit counts."

Not to be out done by McLaren, Honda decides to try something new on their front end too.

Fortunately for everyone involved, it doesn't look like they'll be using them in the race.
