When I was at UIowa in '99, they were working on some similar stuff... not so much the navigational aspect, but the image matching stuff so you can take a picture as input and say "find me more that look like this". But the added navigational aspect from that demo is *very* impressive and much more powerful than simply doing image matching.

Imagine being somewhere on vacation and clicking a picture of something on your iPhone 2.0. Then it instantly tells you all the cool stuff about the item, nearby stuff to see, restaurants, stories from other people's vacations, etc.

Or even more impressive (and a bit scary)... snap a photo of someone in public, then instantly get a list of all their friends and family, or anyone they've ever been photographed with in public... places they've been to... cars they own... where they work, where they live. This would be terribly powerful if it were linked to security cameras. :eek:
