Mick Dellegrino hates it when you get his name wrong!

Cory, you were just 1.1s and 0.6s off Matt's times? Holy crap man... if you had a little extra horsepower in that RS you'd be mopping up Street Mod!! Very impressive times considering Matt finished 5th and 8th in PAX and has an easy 100hp on you.

And nice work by Kevin Weiss to sneak in between Matt and Cory on Sunday. Matt, you're still the SECCS benchmark, but you're going to have some competition this season in SM even w/o MikeK running!

The config. at RFR (last year's was really similar to this one, given constraints of "the peanut") seem to REALLY close up the times! IIRC, last year there was something like .7 seconds between 1st and 4th place in SM on the second day!

If Matt slips off his A game one day, he's TOAST!

WRX06TR 2009-04-27 07:39 PM

My middle initial is A

So just curious, who stole my "R"s sometime before or during the 4th rungroup on Sunday. I'm not mad since I was done with them, just impressed that you were able to get them off my car and on yours with any success given they were made of 3" wide painters tape.

A1337STI 2009-04-28 08:36 AM

Wow, we have a mystery now. the missing R tape :p

Great driving Mick and Silvio! I think we subaru drivers did rather well 7 of the top 20 spots! (well if i count the Saabaru) and 10 of the top 25 :D course there was only 40 peeps, but that's besides the point ...

Yes. He was there both days.

cody 2009-04-29 10:12 AM

He had a great time too and is looking fwd to Hawthorn so he can compete against his former comrades. Man, it's so awesome watching Evo's launch with two step. They spin all 4 and then the car jumps forward. Sunday actually warranted such a launch.

A1337STI 2009-04-29 10:43 AM

he's going Front wheel drive for Hawthorne! now there's a mod :P /Teasing

Yeah the start to Sunday's course was fun, but it was brutal on the clutch. I could launch at 4K, grab 2nd flat foot it, then just tap the brakes to get around the slalom . We need to try having a few starts that have a long straight, and a hair pin before the timing lights so there's really no need to abuse the car on the start. well maybe not that extreme, but at least a narrow 90 degree turn after about good distance then timing lights. :)

cody 2009-04-29 10:47 AM

Try rocking a 5 speed. My one good launch where I didn't roast the clutch is probably part of how I shaved a second off my last RNP run, but I error on the side of roasting the clutch to protect the gears most of the time. I'm getting better at launching but I'd prefer a turn after the start too. I want my 5MT to last as long as possible.

WRX06TR 2009-04-29 12:44 PM

I get to overzealous when launching when I have a little room to run. I had 1st gear spinning on my second run, fun but no bueno, I had to dial it back and bog every other launch

20psiMR 2009-04-29 12:49 PM

Man you guys are all FAST!!! I just looked at the Hawthorne times last year, and generally Rasmus is 1 to 2seconds faster then the top SM guys. I dunno if the SM guys in vegas are just not that fast, but the competition out here is way over my head haha! You guys definitely give me a bar to step up to. Just sucks when you think your pretty fast and get blown away in a new region lol. But hey, just gonna make me have to get some serious seat time and step up the game! I need some longer straights so I can stretch some evo powah!

I'll be there both days of hawthorne for sure, and should have v710's on. I did mean 17x9.5 in the previous post. I mixed them up because my Advan RS's are 18x9. Woops hehe.

I usually launch on the 4th and 5th run to try and eek out that last little bit of time. Lot of times I can make up a full second with a full on launch, even if there is a turn thrown in pretty quick. That second day was perfect for a launch, just line up to the far left and aim at that first slalom cone and I can shoot straight through that first gate hehe. Too bad I coned that run >< Im not used to courses being so tight, you must have a miata driver setting those cones out there! haha

We need to keep a mix of hard and soft launches. The stock class cars (or underpepared modded ones) can't hang with a full drag launch, but on the other hand PAX and SP/SM and up classes are expected to be able to launch hard. I happen to be able to launch the dogcrap out of my car now, so if I never get to do that I'm getting a pax disadvantage, and if we always have drag starts I get an advantage. So it needs to be a mix.

Glad you made it out. Sorry I wasn't there. We encourage people to ride with other drivers. it is amazing what you can learn riding with a good driver.

It sounds like you need more cornering and less powah. :)

I keep trying to pound into everyone's head that Autocross is not about going fast, it is about getting around corners. Almost everyone overdrives the turns including me.

I will not be at Hawthorne, but may make the third weekend.

You could still drive for LV you know. ;)

Oh, and if you really want to be humbled, go down and run with SF region some weekend. They kick our ass big time.

Or better yet, go to a Nat'l Tour event. I went to one at Atwater in 2004. I was Reno's reigning STX champ at the time, and was getting schooled by 4 seconds per lap.

"Humbling" is an understatement. Reno's region is not all that competitive on a national scale... which is why a lot of the Sacramento folks place well up here, and why all the constant arguing over street tires, high altitude, and PAX are so ridiculous. Anyone that wants to win in Reno just needs a fairly well prepped car for their class and the driving chops to use it. In general I'd say Reno cars and drivers are like 6/10 of where they need to be to compete nationally. We've only got a few drivers that are really good at the sport.

...'course that's based on my experience from '03 to '06... I haven't been autocrossing much since then. Maybe ya'll have gotten better than you used to be. :P

Rasmus is definately one of the better drivers I've seen. He usually ends up near the top of the hawthorne results every year.

Chris, the group in SM is so much fun, the more the merrier...It will be interesting to see where you end up on the 710's, we haven't had a race tire car in SM in ages. I'm really impressed with the speed from top to bottom in SM, everyone's getting good!

20psiMR 2009-05-01 01:34 PM

Too late Dean, I already changed my membership over to Reno Region since I had to renew two weeks ago hehe. Ya the v710's are in and look awesome, Im looking forward to bolting those on. I still think I was killing a bunch of time in that off camber 90* corner. The slalom I felt was WAY fast, the new suspension feels awesome I just need to get more seat time with it. Im used to alot more body roll with just aftermarket springs hehe. Car feels very flat, if anything just a touch of understeer. That was really only in that one corner though, so I think I was just coming in too hot and dont need to worry too much about changing anything except my corner entry =P

That corner was tough on Sat. I was definitely coming in way to hot and screwed it up every time.

A1337STI 2009-05-04 09:13 AM

That was a sick corner I kept getting my car way to loose on exit and instead of modulating the throttle to tuck it back in, i just rode it out until it was time to shift :D probably lost a lot of time in doing so. :( but it was a lot of fun :) Vick out drove me both days, but still we don't have a Subaru on top of AS. we need to step it up a bit!

20psiMR 2009-05-08 09:24 AM

I kept plowing that one too. The car is set up pretty neutral, which I like. Evos can be very tail happy, and for that corner it would have worked out better but being neutral I can slalom faster. Its all give and take I guess. Just need to train my brain to go into that stuff slower, but it already felt like I was crawling through it as is!

As Dean always like to point out... the slow parts of the course offer you no real lap time gains, but *tons* of opportunities to ruin your lap.

So just go slow in the slow parts and concentrate on going faster in the fast parts. Even if you can go faster in the slow parts, it doesn't help your lap time much, and going fast in the slow parts tends to result in cones or big, time eating, mistakes.

k-dogg39 2009-05-13 11:34 AM

Who else is going to the North/South challenge in Hawthorne? Just wanted to remind people you have to register by tomorrow or the price goes up...

cody 2009-05-13 11:37 AM

Meeeeeeeeee! Chris and Mary are sharing a room with Amanda, Lucy, and I. Should be fun!

MattR 2009-05-13 11:37 AM

I'm going. Don't forget to reserve your room at teh El Crap either.

van 2009-05-13 03:03 PM

Me! Now who else is cheap and wants to split a room?

szucchet 2009-05-15 07:49 AM

I'll be there for :Dsure, with new brakes and maybe an alignment

20psiMR 2009-05-16 10:16 AM

Mary isnt invited anymore, we broke up =p Im back on the prowl and rollin solo to Hawthorne, but definitely still goin! Weekend after that Im moving into the new house on Red Hawk golf course, so although the first part of the month sucked, the latter half will be sick! I got my raise finally too for moving up here, so it all happens for a reason right! Gonna be having some fun install partys and beer pong nights at the new house, I'll keep you guys in the loop when housewarming is!

wildfirefli 2009-05-16 10:21 AM

OT. Definitely.

On a related note, I was thinking of heading down Friday around 2 or 3, anyone wanna tag along.

Absolutely! :D I know Jason's buddy Pat is bringing one too, but I am not sure what kind...

MattR 2009-05-17 05:48 PM

I worked on the Sti all day today, it's dialed in as best it can be. Should be good enough to run second/ third in SM. I won't have any chance against the race tire guys as far as the NS goes. I still can't figure out what's bent in my front end, I can't get any less than -1.8 camber in the right front, which is over 1 degree less than I had a few month back. Fucking Reno-Fernley. hahaha. Anyway, after Hawthorne I'll have to get it on a lift and check it out. Everything looks fine to the bare-eye...
