Yeah, I was laughing at the idea of putting the sick burn on you and placing top 5 in pax in your car on Saturday, but didn't pull it off... :D

20psiMR 2009-08-31 07:31 AM

I swear I have the curse of the two tenths! Matt beats me by two tenths, then Kevin, then Matt again on sunday. I need to pick up a full two seconds on these v710's and I just dont see it happening, Im not aggressive enough lol. I think when I burn these off Im going with some 285/30/17's on those rims with the street tire pax. It just doesnt make it worth it to run race rubber with that penalty, and Matt is just TOO DAAAAAMN FAST!

MattR 2009-08-31 07:36 AM

Chris, if you want to foot the bill, I'll run with the race tire handicap

Dean 2009-08-31 07:47 AM

The T factor still probably favors race tires, the gotcha is that you must be able to drive them at or near their limits on a consistent basis and very few people can do that.

It is easier to drive street tires, period. They are far more forgiving and provide far more feedback to the driver which allows the driver to learn to drive better, faster.

I often say that if you want to learn to drive better, drive a low HP un-sporty car on the worst tires. This will force you to drive better to be fast, because the car cannot save or protect you from your mistakes.

20psiMR 2009-08-31 11:06 AM

I agree, and the fact is I just cant drive them at their limit. Or maybe just need more practice on them. It amazes me how grippy they are, and I know there is more time out there if I push harder but sometimes I just get a little sketchy and dont push as hard as I know I can. Specially going into that chicago box, that one I know I could have run in strong and braked hard, but I kept just letting off and coasting in with light brakes. I know what I NEED to do, its just the execution thats hurting me lol. Need more confidence, and only one way to get that...seat time hehe. I need some track days though, thats where I really shine. Hopefully have some extra cash for PDX's soon. For me autocross is like a quick fix for when Im not on track hehe.

Don't get down on yourself. Knowing what you're doing wrong is like 99% of eventually going faster. What sucks is running an okay run on your 1st lap, then getting slower each lap afterwards and not knowing WTF you're doing differently, which has happened to me in the past. If you know where you're losing time, but just not executing, that's no big deal at all. You'll eventually get it, like you said, all you need is more seat time.

20psiMR 2009-08-31 02:14 PM

I hear that Scott. Usually my runs get faster, I usually take my first two runs to really get to know the course and see where I can be fast. My 3rd run was good, but I felt it could have been faster. 4th run it was really starting to rain and I spun out on the first hard sweeper, so I just gave up on it hehe. More seat time and I can put these slicks to use Im sure. Just need to stop wimping out on some of the more technical sections!

A1337STI 2009-09-01 06:27 PM

damn it. i missed paved rally X ? i mean auto X in the rain :D

Yeah the R's take a lil while to figure out .. not that i've ran enough to make much progress but i can tell it could happen..

Debbie Kerswill won on the East Course today! http://www.scca.org/popup/raceresult...13555&file=852

These results are provisional, but unless something odd happens, the results shouldn't change. She has a lead of 0.356 seconds over second place and 0.726 seconds over 4th place, so she's got a great shot at a trophy!

MikeK 2009-09-10 10:05 PM

tysonK 2009-09-11 09:24 AM

Great Job Debbie you deserve it!

szucchet 2009-09-11 09:42 AM

Congrats dk!!!

dknv 2009-09-15 08:15 PM

Thanks Everyone!!

It was hard to have to wait it out until the very last run in the class on day 2 before the results were set. I could've given myself a concussion were it not for my helment, since I had such a bad last run and was smacking myself in the head driving back to grid.

Didn't drive to my potential, though none of us did. The other 2 contenders (Gretchen and Katie) could just as well have won it; I got lucky.

Won 4 Hoosiers, Mazda money, miscellaneous goodies, and most importantly - The Jacket!!!

I hope that those of you who want to, get a chance to go to Nationals at Lincoln NE someday. Great site, decent town, and autox and racing culture to the max.

van 2009-09-15 08:22 PM

Awesome, Congrats Debbie!

Kevin M 2009-09-15 10:03 PM

Congrats again Deb! I would love to go to Nats someday, but since Nina can basically never, ever take a week off in September I don't see it happening. I'd like to at least get in some Evo schools and NT events at some point though.

Dean 2009-09-18 05:23 PM

Just so everyone knows and has the evening to cower in their beds...

I will be there this weekend to spank you like the kiddy car driving toddlers you all know in your hearts that you are. :)

Seriously, I will crush you. :)

[/smack talk]

I have no idea what Nina and Kevin will decide I am driving, but it will be the RS or the 3. I will be coaching Nina, but will likely give a guided course walk and help anyone else who wants it as time permits.

See you there bright and early.

MattR 2009-09-18 07:35 PM

Bring it.

van 2009-09-18 07:38 PM

Aw Snap!

cody 2009-09-19 04:40 PM

Had a small mechanical issue today so I only took 2 runs (3 if you count the run before a rerun). The noise that I've been hearing from the brakes (thought it was the brakes because the noise stopped when I'd drag the brakes) for like 9 months was a wheel bearing. Every time I had wiggled the wheel to test if it was a WB it was fine so I stopped checking it. :unamused: I'm sure if I had wiggled it when changing my oil last weekend it would have wiggled.

Anyway, the wheel bearing is so far gone that the rotor is rubbing on the caliper and is getting gouged and it took out the outer CV joint so grease got all over the place which probably is why the ABS light came on (grease in the sensor) or maybe it was because the fluid in that caliper boiled and caused the pedel to hit the floor during my 2nd run.

It's at my buddy's house in Fernley a mile from the track. Cory was good enough to swing by and help diagnose the issues as well as drive me home. Taking it to a place down the street to get it fixed Monday.

So I may be in Fernley tomorrow but it will only be to get my car towed. :unamused:

At least I didn't hit the wall like Cort did in his Exige.

No the one on the far side of the HP course. Between Turn 6A and 5B. Closer to 6A.

yeah it was ugly. Too bad about that.

Yeah! I went to four auto parts shops tonight before i finally found a place that had 2 3/4 id hose in stock. I cut myself a piece about 3/8" longer and I think I'm good to go tomorrow. That was my best off yet but it was due to a mechanical failure, not my driving.......I do feel sorry about the dirt/gravel facial I gave Kevin.

MPREZIV 2009-09-19 05:40 PM

Jim Gandy told me today that I need to either charge for lessons, or stop beating up the locals and do some regional/national tours!

I can't believe how fast my car and I were today! IIRC, 87.063 clean. It felt GREAT!

 You got it a lot worse than I did. I think you probably scared the shit out of those corner workers though.

Ya, you and Matt were really fast today. I wish I could have gotten a clean run, but pretty sure I still pulled out the win.:D

Sucks for Court, hopefully it is not too bad.

Nobody likes a showoff.
Would Cody's wheel bearing issue have anything to do with his brake pedal going to the floor? Maybe rubbing on the caliper overheating the pads?

I wasn't bragging, just proud is all! :P

Likely a combination of grease in the abs sensor freaking out the controller, the offset rotor giving strange piston stroke, and overheat with the rubbing you mentioned all caused his brake pedal to go to shit. It's good it was found when it was, and didn't turn into an even bigger issue.

He came over at the end of the day and asked what was up with you and your car. I said it is a very well setup car with a very good and getting better, driver. It will be interesting to see where PAX comes out. I'm pretty sure you got me, but it is going to be close with some others. My 92.875 in the THS Mazda 3 felt pretty fast. I beat Jim in his TES Miata by over a second raw, so don't take him too seriously. :)

He did call you one of my protegees. Not sure I can take that much credit, but it was kind of cool.

And I drove Kevin's car home, and I think he needs to soften his dampers. They really launch you off of bumps, so they are probably over damped.

Course for tomorrow is reverse with a few changes. We did not move up the hill.

Kevin M 2009-09-19 06:04 PM

Probably it was from massive pad knockback as the rotor was deflecting. Rotor deflects, pushes some fluid back in the reservoir, and MC piston runs out of volume before reseating the pads on the right rear. This happened to me when I was losing a bearing in the red wagon last season. (The gouges are still in the brake rotor from rubbing the caliper bracket)

I wouldn't be surprised. It's at 50% on all 8 adjustments right now, probably need to drop to something like 30% bump, 40% rebound. Once I look up which end is which and which way to turn the knob is soft...

Dean 2009-09-19 06:08 PM

As a person who blew a wheel bearing at the track, they start making a lot of noise and fail shortly thereafter taking the rotor and maybe spindle and axle with them.

If your front wheels ever really making a roaring noise, shut it down and save your rotors, axle, and possibly your spindle. Calipers are probably OK, but pads are likely destroyed as well.

Now Cody really needs that set of yellow pads. :)

it might take 13 years or so but I'm gonna do it!

Dean 2009-09-19 06:14 PM

Oh, and I think Kevin is suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning after driving his car, so we may have to start talking slower and buy him a padded room/suit. :) I could not find a good combination of window and sun roof position that completely eliminated it. Drove with my head tilted toward the open window. Good thing no cops saw me looking like a falling down drunk trying to stay awake. :)

Kevin M 2009-09-19 08:54 PM

 Sunroof open, windows up works pretty well. But I suppose this week I should finally crawl under there and fix the donut gasket flange, I'm sure that's where it's coming from.

MattR 2009-09-19 09:18 PM

I don't know, Cory may be right at the top of PAX on Saturday...I don;t exactly know how the karts did, so who knows.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I tried to limp it home but it was scarry to drive. Thank God I have a buddy so close to the track.

Sucks it let go in so far away from Nissan. Now I have to let some strangers work on my car. *shudder* My roadside assistance only covers up to 8 miles so I'm taking it to this place called Auto Doc's Complete Car Care a couple miles from it's current location. Any suggestions appreciated.

More cowbell! I mean, more volume. I can't tell when you lift/brake easily. Were you having to lift/brake for the 2 offset gates at 1B?

I realize I had way less power, but if I got all the way right, that was an easy no lift gate all the way to the the 3 cone slalom in 1C.

I also found taking the optional slalom between 3 & 4 left was quicker. Did you try it both ways? Again, lower power on the 3 made the shorter distance better I think???

Wow. I saw lots of areas where I could have carried more speed. Nice run!

I wasn't sure if that was optional, there was that pointer cone at the beginning, so I never tried going to the left.

MattR 2009-09-20 06:16 PM

Yeah Dean, I have to lift at 1 B or I was in the dirt. As far as the turn 4 slalom, I tried it both ways, I could carry much more speed into the right hander (turn 4) if I started right. The Hero camera has poopy volume, normal washes out in my car, and lo is pretty quiet. You'll have to turn your volume up. I may just lay some aggressive electronic music over it to really bother you.
