Come down to Lone Pine to race!!

Okay, I know its kinda far (for most of you), and its kinda short notice... but the Manzanar Time Trials in Lone Pine California are happening this weekend... registration is $70 (for charity), loner helmets available.. and the classes are really loose (non-SCCA event)... registration starts tomorrow (Sat. the 31st) at 7am... if anyone is in the least bit interested in going.. let me know and ill give ya the rest of the info!

I'd be interested if I wasn't already going to a wedding. Sounds like an interesting evernt... big, fast course!

You guys missed out on an AWESOME road race... I popped my road race/auto-x cherry and had the best time I have had doing anything in a long ass time... I am hopefully going to make the auto-x in Reno this coming weekend... I am addicted like it was crack. Oh, and as to how I did... my first run I ran a 169... my best run ended up being a 142... hows that for improvement? There was only one other Rex out there, and it was decently modified and his best run was 137.. but an Impreza was out there reppin and won his class.

tysonK 2003-06-01 05:06 PM

Good Job Dude! You better be here next weekend. The Subaru's will literally take over the event.

STIwish 2003-06-01 05:41 PM

Im gonna do my best, depends on if I pick up some designs for websites this next week. Im not sure how well I will do in such a tight course.. Maybe ill disable my ABS for the event, it caused me the most problems on the tight sections of the course.... My best time was good enough to put me in 4th in D-stock and I would have won 2 of the other classes with it.

Hey justin, see the other thread for run time info, but it looks like we won't have to run until the afternoon, so you have plenty of time to make it up here. that should help a little.

How was the course surface? I know I've had my ABS behave abnormally on an uneven surface. I haven't had any ABS misbehaviors at Stead -- unless I just waited too long to brake, and had to brake harder kicking it into abs.

STIwish 2003-06-02 02:41 PM

very rough and uneven.. sandy hair pin is where it killed my time... long 3rd gear straight into a VERY tight turn.. even if i braked really early.. id slide past the apex with the car feeling like it was bouncing

tysonK 2003-06-02 05:19 PM

sounds like you should have busted some 4 Wheel Drift Action!

STIwish 2003-06-02 05:41 PM

Actually, I was doing that almost all day long... totally sideways through some loose sweepers... turning in at insane speeds and just keeping my foot in it... this hairpin was too tight and the far cone was in to close to get the tail to rotate.. is what i was trying to do but the ABS wouldnt let me.

tysonK 2003-06-02 05:51 PM

damn that must have been too much fun.

STIwish 2003-06-02 06:29 PM

It got myself and my wife addicted... totally addicted :)

tysonK 2003-06-02 06:53 PM

was she driven also or just the co-pilot?

STIwish 2003-06-02 09:17 PM

She just rode with me.. had a blast though.

And, will she try driving too one of these days?
(We need more girls in this sport.)

STIwish 2003-06-03 05:36 PM

Funny you ask that.. Yes, my wife will be running events in her own ride that I am trying to acquire currently... Im thinking an MKII GTI or Jetta would be good... maybe one of the old Z cars... something that can handle and make power on the cheap... it will be a strictly track car and driven by both of us, but mostly her.

dknv 2003-06-04 08:45 AM

Whatever it is, let it have power steering. That's probably the biggest complaint I hear from the girls running their husband's vehicle, that & seating position (i.e. the guy has installed a racing seat or harness set up for his long arms, and it's uncomfortable for her).

STIwish 2003-06-04 10:47 AM

Are seat sliders allowed in most auto-x's and track days?

ZER026D 2003-06-04 12:13 PM

I think so if not I am screwed.

STIwish 2003-06-04 12:21 PM

I was most worried about track days cause Im gonna run at Buttonwillow next month I do believe.

ZER026D 2003-06-04 12:33 PM

then you might have to get somthing better

sperry 2003-06-04 12:59 PM

whoa whoa whoa... uh you guys are talking about plain old OEM adjustable seats?

They're fine in AutoX, in fact some classes *require* non-race seats.

I'm sure they're fine at track days too.... I mean, they are designed to hold up in accidents on the freeway, right? Driving on the track is safer than driving on the freeway IMO, as long as you're not full on racing.

I know Debbie's tracked her car, and she doesn't have a racing shell.

dknv 2003-06-04 02:32 PM

Scott's right -- normal adjustable seats are perfectly fine in autox.

As for tracking your car - I would say the requirements depend on what organization is putting on the event, and what kind of event it is. In the events I've attended (Audi Quattro Club, NASA), my stock WRX was perfectly acceptable. Helmets should be Snell SA rated though.

Now if you're in a race event, rollbar, mounted fire extinguisher, or other safety gear may be required.

STIwish 2003-06-04 03:21 PM

I was actually thinking adjustable aftermarket race seats

tysonK 2003-06-04 04:20 PM

those recaros i sat in in the evo were nice, it make me want race seats.
