Anybody else have uber fast internet all of the sudden?

I thought it seemed faster. Anyone else with Ch@rter in the same boat? I used this test. It's usually only 10 down 1 up.

Kevin M 2010-02-20 09:29 PM

They must have done work near you or something. Or a massive number of people near you switched to DSL.

TrueNative 2010-02-20 09:45 PM

Ummm,yeah. WOW!!

Last Result:
Download Speed: 21864 kbps

Mine's almost that fast now too.

We have Ch@rter Business at work and we're only getting the normal 10 down 1.5 up.

TrueNative 2010-02-20 10:40 PM

I'm sure they will find the mistake, fix it, and charge us accordingly.

sperry 2010-02-21 03:15 AM

Cody, expect your bill to be twice as much now. And expect them to tell you "we're sorry we only offer the new superhighspeed service at this new price now, we can't give you your old plan any longer. We don't care if you don't want or need so much throughput since we desperately need an excuse to raise your rates".

knucklesplitter 2010-02-21 08:05 AM

My Charter is still 8k and 1k.

That would suck. It's still 20 down, 2 up.

Me too, Normally 10~14 down.

Kevin M 2010-02-21 01:02 PM

Same here. 19k down, 1k up. I am sure we;re not paying for more than the 5 or 8 meg service. Yet. :unamused:

dknv 2010-02-21 05:51 PM

Could it be that you're getting more bandwidth due to numbers of other Charter users who weren't on at that time, due to lost power?
http://www.rgj.com/article/20100221/NEWS15/100221012

Kevin M 2010-02-21 06:00 PM

Seems unlikely. There aren't that many people without power today I don't think. We haven't had any outages around here anyway, AFAIK.

tysonK 2010-02-22 05:04 PM

my SBC is still solid, lol:

Here is mine on WIMI (also with charter):

Download Speed: 11489 kbps (1436.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1045 kbps (130.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Dean 2010-02-22 06:48 PM

2.5/0.421 for my DSL using Cody's test. Take that Tyson. :)

van 2010-02-22 07:07 PM

I get this on the speedtest.net test
http://www.speedtest.net/result/725990794.png
When I do the http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ I get
Last Result:
Download Speed: 21786 kbps (2723.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2120 kbps (265 KB/sec transfer rate)
Why are they so different? or is my KB/MB translation wrong.

edit: I had a torrent open while doing the speed test

Kevin M 2010-02-22 07:15 PM

Interesting

It seems to vary a bit. Still fast though.

Cody's test gave me 21768kbps down/ 2080kbps, 50ms ping

Well, as long as the movie isn't skipping, it's not like having more bandwidth is going to let me watch the movie faster.

I could really care less about "speed test" results. Cody, what download speed are you getting with your torrent program?

1.7 mbps or so. I think a 700 MB file took under 10 minutes at one point.

100_Percent_Juice 2010-02-23 09:45 AM

That's pretty awesome. The best I have gotten with my 6mb uverse service is about 750kb/sec. It would be pretty sweet if they never mentioned anything and the speed continued. What charter speed are you actually signed up for?

cody 2010-02-23 09:55 AM

I "pay" for 10, but they actually lowered my monthly bill when I upgraded from 5...locked in for 12 months...

I pay ~$110/mo for internet and TV with DVR, HD, and two premium channels. I want to find out if they offer a better DVR though (1080p instead of 1080i and a faster/better interface).

Last time I checked, I couldn't get Uverse, but I would consider it.

sperry 2010-02-23 09:58 AM

Go IGT!

http://www.speedtest.net/result/726672246.png

Edit, ran it again, just to be sure...

http://www.speedtest.net/result/726673992.png

No wonder it takes 10 minutes to watch a 2 minute long video on YouTube.

cody 2010-02-23 10:00 AM

Ha, faster upload than download. It's probably a T3 with more Download load than upload load or something.

No, it's probably the 1000 people listening to Pandora. :unamused:

cody 2010-02-23 10:02 AM

That's what I said. :)

Starting with a symetrical connection like T1/T3's and then adding users who compete for, primarily, download speed is going to cause the test to indicate a faster upload than download.

ScottyS 2010-02-23 11:15 AM

Oh, I know. I just thought that my blazing upload capability when compared to prime traffic download time was funny.

I've been here on holidays and clocked some unreal download speeds.

cody 2010-02-23 11:20 AM

I bet. That is a crazy fast upload speed.

Around 5pm here, the network suddenly gets awesome. Sometimes I specifically wait 'til then to download logs from our server or check-in a bunch of changes to source control. It's the difference between waiting 90 minutes and waiting 5 minutes.

Kevin M 2010-02-23 01:59 PM

Damn... here's results from Sierra 102 at TMCC.

:jawdrop:

That's a lot of porn you could be downloading!

marleyjb 2010-02-25 05:50 PM

From an insiders perspective (I work for a contractor for Charter):

I have heard through the grapevine that Charter is increasing speeds across the board. And that they will be offering a 64 mb service in the near future.

We know somebody that works there. I am sure they could get it turned back down for you. :)
