The "good find" sperry-rant.

WTF is with the use of the phrase "good find" lately? I swear I see it everywhere! As if the whole point of the internet is to forage about, looking for tid-bits of the same crap with a different name on it, so that we can present it to our e-friends on such-and-such.com's forums in hopes that we may get one or two people that praise us with the highest internet honor, a "good find".

Perhaps it's just the fact that everything's already been done and seen a million times over on the internet already. The fact that 99% of the crap posted is "WTLW". Is that what makes people feel they need to spew-forth admiration to another for simply finding something that doesn't suck and isn't a re-post? But even so, if that's the case, why the phrase "good find"? I know I'm not out there browsing the 'net trying to "find good things". All I'm looking for is the specific information I need, like wheel offsets, or a cheap hard drive, or some simple 3 on 9 on 1 action. If I think someone else might be looking for the same thing, I'll post it up. I don't care if you think it's a "good find" or not, just fucking click the link, or don't.

I think what bothers me is that saying "good find" is about as useful as throwing down a "LOLLLLers!!!!!!!1" in response to something funny. It adds *nothing* to the original post. Shit, if I post a joke, I *know* it's funny, that's why I posted it. You don't need to tell me you laughed, mostly 'cause I don't give a fuck if you laughed or not, and partially because it's a contentless post that ultimately wastes bandwidth. If you've got something to add that will entertain me back, then by all means, post it up, but just laughing along smacks of "me-too-ism".

Similarly, letting me know something I found on the internet is "good", is just a pathetetic attempt to try to gain cool-points by association w/ whatever it was that I found that was good. Guess what Chuckels, I posted it *because* it was good in some way... I don't fucking need to be told how good the coffee in my fucking house is, I buy the good shit, because when Bonny goes shopping she buys crap.

Finally, I think the real reason it bothers me so, is 'cause back in the dorms at college, I had a fat-ass retarded roommate from the armpit of California (Fresno). This mental giant could pigeon-hole all of the world into two catagories: stuff that was "good" and stuff that was "not good". (I know, I know, how did he keep his system straight!?!) Anyway, if something pleased him he said "good stuff", if it didn't "that's not good stuff". Thank you fucking Einstein for breaking it down and letting me know. After 6 months of hearing the phrase "good stuff" tossed around on an hourly basis, I couldn't fucking take it, an started living my life 180 degrees out of phase w/ the mutherfucker. I slept while he was at class, and went out while he was home trying to bang ugly virgin chicks in our dorm room... (there was one girl, everyone on the floor caller her simple "the beast"... and she never gave it up to my roommate either... beast-owned!). Anyway, the whole "good find" thing is just too close to the "good stuff" retardation of old.

So in closing, if you're going to post the two words "good find" in response to someone else's post, at the very least, let us know *why* it's good for god's sake. Add some content to the board, expand the knowledge of others, enhance the goodness of the indicated "find". If you don't, well just post these two words instead: "ban me". And trust me, I'm gonna come up with something nice and devious for the chuckle-head that posts "good find" in this thread.

Damn, you must be going crazy at your parent's house to go after this one.

Hmm, well I use "Good find" on occasion, and I don't think of it in the same way you do. I consider it important to thank someone for finding useful information and actually taking the time to post it. Sometimes, if a useful link or bit of info is posted, and no one replies, then the poster may feel like it went unoticed. I suppose other phrases could be used, but good find is a common internet phrase that gets the point across.

MPREZIV 2005-12-27 07:39 AM

Scott, the "3 on 9 on 1 action" just plain scares me. There's nothing wrong with porn, but damn dude. . .

I do have to say that I'm guilty of jumping in and adding my two cents, but I generally try to add something more poiniant than "good find." I too, find that annoying!

And yes, as Matt pointed out, you must be going F'ing stir crazy, up at 1:57 am, on a rant about "good stuff". . .

khail19 2005-12-27 07:39 AM

Isn't 2 AM a little late to get all worked up Scott? I kind of agree with Matt, it's nice to know that other people have found your info useful.

This sentence was a good find for me, because until I read this, I was just going to post "good find" to try and be funny. By finding this I saved myself from a potential ban.

You know, after 4 LONG ass days with my Relatives, I can feel his pain......I am a man on a short fuse right now....I can't wait for a them to go HOME!!!!!

Dean 2005-12-27 09:06 AM

I agree with Scott to an extent. "Good Find" is about as useful as a post with nothing but smilies in it. But unless it is a serious thread, I think they are marginally acceptable. I agree I'd like a liitle more dialog, but whatever... I'm sure I have been guilty of it at some point, so I try to be tollerant.

Oh, and as an example, here is Scott's most recent "Good Find" from the GRM tire comparison thread.

I'm waiting for Austin to chime in after his LOL rant...

MattR 2005-12-27 09:09 AM

So, I responded "Good Find" originally in that thread, because I was reading it and using it for fuel in my "street tire" thread.

So, is sperry's "Cool Dean, I hadn't seen that... time to get my read on." comment really much differnet that my "Good find" comment...they basically achieve the same thing.

It's a good thing I have nothing better to do than discuss this, man this is sad.

Yes, and no. They say the same thing, but one has more of a "dialog" quality, and implies more than a passing interest.

And as Scott mentioned, "find" implies something about the actions of the original poster. I didn't "find" that article, I knew it was there, and passed it on as well as made it easy for me to find in the future to refer to kind of like you did with a thread llast week.

Again, i don't mind "Good Finds", but if you are going to spend the time responding, why not comment with some sort of additional information, even if it is that you are going to have to go check it out, whatever it is.

MattR 2005-12-27 09:25 AM

OKay, I will try to do better.

Haha, the similar threads at the bottom are funny...

Nick Koan 2005-12-27 09:27 AM

Hah, I've come close to a rant about this, but then I find that it was just a collection of curses that didn't make any sense.

Dude, sometimes too much eggnog is bad.

dknv 2005-12-27 02:19 PM

I've said 'good find' for years, my intent is to thank the contributor, and it's my business what I might do with the information. So I'm not going to stop because of a sperry rant. Maybe I haven't noticed it's being over-used elsewhere; and if it's getting to you, Scott, sorry for you. (Maybe some therapy to get that fat-assed retarded roommate's phrasebook out of your memory banks would be a good gift for you next year.)

Along the lines of lol and smiley faces--well, sometimes the redeeming value I get from those, is that I can see who shares a similar sense of humor. And I guess in my case, when I 'lol' at something, what I might be trying to say is, Thank you for giving me something funny to laugh about today, because I haven't laughed out loud for awhile and I really needed that.

btw: who is Bonny (and why does she buy crap)? :)

sonicsuby 2005-12-27 02:21 PM

Most of the posts on many of the forums I waste my time on have much worse one-line-nothing-posts. I'm really tired of "+1", "^"=for people too laxy to just quote people, and some of the time this stupid ass character is not even pointing to the correct post.

The most annoying part for me the extra scrolling I do just in case something is actuallly useful below those posts.

sperry 2005-12-27 03:23 PM

Okay, this rant was intended as entertainment for the board. I'm a little surprised about all the semi-serious replies!

As far as the reply I made to Dean's post about the tire article, my intention was to imply that I was going to go read it and add my thoughts to the thread at a future time (that hasn't occured yet... I'm too busy tire shopping). :P

Anyway, I hope people were at least mildly entertained by the rant. Next time I'll try not to hit a topic so close to home, and stick to stuff like drive-thru complaints.

Oh, and Bonny is from Pulp Fiction.

Hahaha, I know your bitterness is usually just an act. I am so entertained by your sour nature sometimes though, because it can be very convincing...I thought you were attacking me, so I was feeling sorry for myself...

Debbie, I'm glad you got a good laugh today, I did too!

Man, that Bonnie quote was funny though. I didn't want to point it out, but damn that made me laugh.

Don't even get me started on 'all intensive purposes'...

Since I was able to recognize your sarcasm (hell, we should all have bruises now from being hit over the head by it), I'll just comment on the one you didn't mention (but used nonetheless). . . there/they're/their. Although I did get a laugh out of "differnent."

No No....a white elephant gift...although seems to referrence a large white elephant. Instead of doing a gift exchange, each person at the old job picks up a Gift with a $15 dollar limit. No holds barred usually, risque' is the rule. Then during the exchange numbers are drawn to see who picks first. As each persons gift if chosen the next person has a chance to steal the other persons gift or choose to keep the one they have. However the next person can steal yours when its their turn, and so on and so on until the last person picks. Its quite entertaining actually, and the fun part is that each person is forced to unwrap the gift and reveal it outloud to the rest of the group.

I could be a loser and get a gift card, but I think having them say outloud that they got something a bit more exciting would be more fun, especially since it will be out in the open at the Ruby River. I spent a few minutes at Spencers looking around at stuff, but didn't pick anything up yet. :|

It's not that the gift card is a "loser gift" persay, but in the context of the game it would be rather bland in comparison to "Oral Sex the Game" or say a "36 pack of Trojans". I was thinking of buying "Your First Bondage Kit" or the "Stripper Pole in a Box" but the latter was $79...so I am thinking of that one for the wife(me) for valentines day
