Street Tire for Auto-X

So many choices:

I think it would be cool to sport some Hankook.

200 Treadwear Hankook

S-03 $100 Rebate on S-03, $50 on 070's

Azenis RT-615

160 Treadwear Continental SportContact

Pilot Sport PS2

------

http://www.discounttiredirect.com Says they still have Azenis Sports.

http://www.tirerack.com

Kevin M 2005-04-10 10:15 PM

Tha Hankooks are an interesting choice at $440. Even if they weren't totally up to par I doubt they really suck. Minimal investment.

I'd cross the PS2s and Contis off the list for autocross. Class them with the Goodyear GSD3s as good street, bad track/autoX tires.

Leaves the S03s, Azenis, and new Azenis. Either Azenis is probably more competitive than the S03s. Try to snag some more 215s if you can. That's probably the best bet.

tysonK 2005-04-10 10:25 PM

Contis are 911 equipment that's got to give them some street cred!

I'm not looking for ultimate grip as I am a balance of daily driving also.

Kevin M 2005-04-10 11:13 PM

You might look hard at the S03s then... 225/45 is $132 each after rebate. $628 up front. I'm going with 235/40 S03s for now.

IMO, the S03's are the hands down best 3-season autocrossable tire. Tons of dry grip, great wet grip, and not bank breaking (esp. considering the rebates on 'em right now). Think Kuhmo MX, but more quiet, and a little grippier.

dknv 2005-04-11 08:09 AM

Some drivers ran on Hankooks at the Atlanta National Tour event this past weekend:

tysonK 2005-04-12 06:28 PM

pfft.

If poeple are even attempting the hankooks on the nat. tour they are good enough for me!

MattR 2005-04-12 06:48 PM

Tyson, I think you should try them out, I want to know how they perform.

Well as soon as I cord my 070's I think I will.

tysonK 2005-04-12 06:50 PM

I'm gonna run a pretty big Hankook Window Banner also.

You're a whore. But I support your decision

Yeah, if the volks I bought were +40 instead of +44 I would have gone with 255/40 RT615s. But, I'd have to lose a whole lot of camber to run them, plus I'm not sold on the wet performance yet. I think after the S03s are gone (235/40 this time) I'll try the 235/40 RT615s that are due out in a month or two.

tysonK 2005-04-12 07:29 PM

cool RT615's.

I think we should all run different tires.

Dean 2005-04-12 09:05 PM

The Hankooks are interesting... There is still no good choice for serious Autocross in a 245/40-17 though...

I just ordered a set... 235/40/17 Hankook R-S2 Z212's.

I was a little hesitant, since I don't know all that much about the tread compound vs. the Falken Azenis Sports, however, the 235 Hankooks are just as wide as the 225/45/17 Azenis (both have 8.3" listed as contact patch width), and they have a gearing advantage of being a 40 series tire (.5" smaller overall diameter). Plus they're a little cheaper than the RT-215's and a lot cheaper than the RT-615's. I'm a little concerned about the 9.5" section width on the Hankooks (vs. the 9.1" of the Azenis)... it might lead to rubbing in the rear on my car again, or more sidewall flex than the Azenis Sports... I guess we'll find out!

Someone with a set of wheels that clear my StopTechs (Dean, Tyson) needs to get a set of the RT-615's so we can trade wheels for an event and compare tires!

MattR 2005-04-13 10:21 AM

Sweet, I found out this morning my Yokohama's are out of stock for now, no biggy..

I'm looking forward to seeing your tires. Are you picking them up today?

They're getting shipped, probably from AZ. Tirerack doesn't carry Hankook's no matter what Kevin thinks he saw on their website.

What I saw was the ability to search by size and brand, and hankook was a choice. Apparently they used to carry them and no longer do and missed that section of the website.

khail19 2005-04-13 11:45 AM

Tirerack does (or did) carry some of the economy Hankook passenger tires, mostly for OE applications on Kias and Hyundais. None of the performance tires though.

sperry 2005-04-13 11:58 AM

If you list tires by brand on TireRack's site, Hankook is not listed. However, if you search by size, on the "limit to these brands" area, Hankook is an option... but there are no 235 Hankooks.

I ordered mine from Discount Tire's website, and I'm gonna have to pay tax, shipping, and that $4 NV environmental fee. But I still came in under the $500 limit I put on myself.

Man, I miss being able to just run by the warehouse and pic 'em up and have 'em installed for cheap. :( Plus the guys overthere recognized me as a Kragen employee because I got the Khail Discount so many times in the past... RT-215's for like $405 *mounted and balanced*. Those were the good old days.

Dean 2005-04-13 03:33 PM

Damn, Scott wasn't supposed to find the 235/40s...

Dean, I don't think you have to worry about the mods/parts on my car too much, since our cars are so damn close setup-wise. You just have to worry about me becoming a better driver than you.

...every event we run together is proportionally more seat-time for me than it is for you. :P

Sounds like the Autocross event horizon... I better bask in the glory before the tidal forces tear me to bits...

If you love the old Azenis RT-215 then get them today.

I have have about 40 sets of both sizes available.

Once they are all sold out then that is it...the Azenis RT-215 will not be produced anymore. If you have friends that are looking for these sizes then let them know to stock up !!!

Anybody still looking for tires?

tysonK 2005-04-13 07:17 PM

umm. I don't need tires yet.

freakin A.

Kevin M 2005-04-13 07:19 PM

It wouldn't be a bad idea to stash them for next season.

sperry 2005-04-13 07:27 PM

Dammit! That post is about 8 hours too late Kevin!!

I wish I had some cash lying around to pick up a spare set... but I'm not gonna cancel my Hankook order to try and grab those. I'm actually looking forward to the gearing advantage, and hopefully lighter weight of the 'kooks.

...course a set of RT-215's for track/solo1 would be nice...

Kevin M 2005-04-13 07:28 PM

I'm sorely tempted to stash a set for when I can afford another set of 17s for the same purposes.

IheartSTI 2005-04-13 07:29 PM

I have the toyo proxy fours..... I like them a lot, my car handles good and they last a long time.

Kevin M 2005-04-13 07:29 PM

And agreed on the gearing issue... that's a big part of why I went 235/40 also.

Yeah, but they're talking autocross tires, the Proxes 4 will not come close to the performance of the RE070, Azenis Sports, MX or Hankooks in this area. It's a fun street performance tire and all, but not good for autocross.

I try to avoid racing on all-season tires.

Maybe those Proxies would be usefull as wets, but after looking at the tread blocks on the new Hankooks, I'd bet a full depth set of those would be awesome wet tires.

bastard!!! you could have tossed S-03 in there  j/k

just woundering.....where can you buy RE070's? I can't seem to find them or they just dont make the size I'm looking for :(

RE070's are usually pretty hard to order... you usually have to buy 'em as take-offs from other STi owners.

'Course, at their retail price, I think RE070's are a rip-off. You can get a set of Azenis *and rims* for the retail price of RE070's.

Actually, it probably would not be to good of an idea. Even if well bagged, sticky tires lose some of there stickieness over time as the rubber dries.

The 215s at this point are probably already 4-6 months old, maybe more. Another 12 months is not going to make them any stickier. A new set of the Hankooks next year is probably a better option unless you are on a super tight budget.

or if we get lucky the 615's will be at the 215's price?:)

Kevin M 2005-04-13 07:52 PM

Nope. Falken either spent a shitload on R&D or got greedy. Don't look for prices to fall much at all.

Don't worry. I get my share of you guys around here... I don't need to go looking for trouble.

<-- knows how JC felt when the WRX turned into the asshole subaru of choice.

Dean 2005-04-14 09:26 AM

Man, this was a nice little tire thread, now it's shot to hell...

Personally I am Car agnostic: I beleive there may or may not be inner speed and agility in all cars, but won't "believe" it until I drive them.
