Cell Phone Companies
What's the best company to go with for Coverage, Customer Service, Geek Factor, Total Value.
My friend who lives in Fernley and works in Reno wants to know. I did notice I had perfect reception on my cell while I was at RFR, but I absolutely hate my company, Cingular, ever since they bought ATT...long story. |
I had nextel and it wasn't too bad in Reno, except it sucked in the South.
Since they merged to Sprint, I jumped ship to Sprint, and so far the coverage seems better. And its cheaper to boot. (and I'm going to abuse my powers and add it to your poll). |
Cool, thanks for adding them to the poll.
|
I have NEXTEL, I'm okay with it...As far as I can tell, no one loves their service on any provider :(
|
my cell phone is always off :P
I hate them all!!!!!!! |
I will say one thing...NEXTEL works IN Fernley, but not between Reno and Fernley. If he lives in Fernley, I'd stay away from Nextel.
|
She's a she. :) That's good to know.

Oh..."It's a Lady!"

LMAO! Who says SNL skits don't make great movies!
Can anybody say anything about Verizon. Consumer Reports always puts them on top in every city, but unfortunately, Reno wasn't included. |
Sprint > *
I switched from Cingular to Sprint...got sprints crappiest phone...and I still get 10x better service. Not to mention the prices are nice and the customer serivce is the best I have had to date. |
i have cingular and it sucks. I lose coverage going down on Mae Anne just after Somerset, and some other weird spots like that. I may be changing too, so im gonna see what you guys say ;) :)

Just to get a kick in...fuck Cingular. Worst customer service EVAR!
|
I had Cingular, dropped 'em over a customer service issue. Got AT&T, 'cause it was IGT's "prefered" provider, dropped 'em when Cingular bought 'em out. Got NEXTEL, I really liked NEXTEL but the coverage and/or the phone I had dropped a lot of calls... jumped over to Sprint as soon as I could after the takeover. So far (2 months or less) I'm pretty happy w/ Sprint.
If your friend is thinking of going to Sprint, drop by the Spring store on S. Virginia next to Meadowood Mall and talk to Nick. He hooked up like 4 or 5 of us ini the club w/ service. He's got a WRX, and seems like a pretty cool guy (though he still hasn't come out to a meet!). |

Trisca says thanks, guys. I'm trying to get her to join...she drives an Outback. :)
|
I joined... Thank you everyone for all the great info!
|
Welcome to the club. Your Outback modded? haha I had Nextel and it sucked horrbily. I really like Verizon, but I haven't used it in Nevada yet.

I voted for Cingular. wtf.
Just because I guess. I thought nextel was below par. I like my sprint so far. I bought the really god damned expensive sprint phone and my signal is good, very good. |
Thanks, this is my first forum... No, not moded, but Cody is trying and he's pretty persuasive! I should, it's relally slooowww on the uptake (it's an automatic).
|
Well it's a good choice to get started! When you start wanting to mod be sure to post up, we'll be happy to help and I have plenty of ideas. My parents had a 00 Outback. They went out of town for a month and I put an intake on since I had to drive it around, then back to stock before they came home. lol So I know the pain of a stock outback.

What? No love for Cricket?

Well, their radio commercials make me want to take my own life. |
Verizon has the best coverage in outlying areas and is pretty damn good all around. We tried them all and settled on them locally, and nationwide. Customer service sucks the least. I think they are the only ones with coverage at all our autocross venues which is all that is really important...
AT&T/Cingular may rule when they get their act together, but I'm betting that will take another 12 months. Sprint/nextel have got even longer to go since there networks aren't remotely similar. 24-48 months before convergence and you get the advantage of the coverage. |

I couldn't agree more! I am dropping Cingular as soon as my contract is up; perhaps sooner. I am willing to pay the $150.00 per line to get rid of them! Verizon has the internet connection that is pretty darn cool. You can hook your computer up to your cell via a wire or bluetooth and have internet access. Your normal minute rates apply. I am probably going this way next. |
Sweet, I like Verizon as a company so that's good news.

I have Nextel and I freakin hate it because I rarely have service anywhere, esp. in buildings. But I have a couple friends and they never have problems. |
I'm frankly pretty happy with my Cingular phone. My folks worked for Nevada Bell for like 30 years each, and if anyone knows about the whole AT&T monopoly thing, Nevada Bell was just a piece of AT&T's pie, so we got fat discounts on their phones. When Cingular bought them out, they gave us the same service deal, so I give them props for that!
I am pretty damn pleased with my service as well! I get great reception! Maybe it's just my Blingin' Rapstar Motorolla Razor Black!!! |

Wow that is awesome. I'm gonna stop by my local Nextel store today. Or would I stop by my local Sprint store...? Hmm, I'll wing it.

The Sprint people, on the other hand, know eactly what time it is. |
Stop by the sprint store. The Nextel stores (in Reno) don't carry Sprint phones due to some wierd legal issue.
|
Damn cellular providers. Sprint it is then. Ooo now I'm kinda excited.
|
Good luck!
|
Damn it, I forgot I have to pay off my bill still. =/
|
I have T-Mobile, drops service alot, but overall I am satisfied with their product.
|
I just switched to Verizon from Cingular and IMHO its night and day. I hardly loose coverage anywhere, even in Boca, where Cingular would drop right off I80 the calls are clearer to. I like the phone (E815) better too. It also has a place to store phots and is easy to get ringtones. The mobile web is very fast for a cell service also.

I still am stuck with Cingular, but my contract will be up soon! Post updated opinions on who I should go with if anything has changed please.

This reminded me that I found this site, the cell site maps are pretty interesting.

Ok so after getting the runaround for a bit, I was told by somebody at the Sprint help center or soemthing to go to a Sprint store and they will take care of it. That dude I initially spoke to was just a douche apparently.

Well I am a happy Sprint customer now!
|
If you want the geek factor, then it would have to be Sprint or Verizon. They are the only companies that have the PPC-6700 phone that has the mobile PC version 5. I have the Sprint version and I am happywith my service and its capabilities (moved from nextel). Phone does everything a laptop does, and more.
|
Ok, time for me to change carriers. Sprint or Verizon, what's the latest on who likes or hates either?
I also want a new phone, I like the red razr, but mostly because it's red and would match my car. (I know, that's a poor requirements definition there.) I'd like a phone that can take pictures; and it would be handy to be able to get to the internet so I can email when I'm traveling. But I don't think I want a full qwerty keyboard, I think that makes a phone footprint too big. Help with ideas? Links? |
