Street racing? Help me figure this out. . .

Ok, I'll preface this by saying that I do not street race. Unfortunately, a lowered Impreza with club decals and NOTURBO on the plates apparently equals a street racing candidate, because I frequently have fools revving at me. I just ignore them and go about my business, but it's annoying nonetheless.

With that out of the way, here's my story:

This evening I finished work at about 10:30 and was heading home when, just before pulling on to 50 from Stewart, I decided I wanted to change the CD in my player. The disc that I wanted to listen to was in a zipped CD case in my glovebox, so I pulled in to the Smith's parking lot in order to change the disc safely.

I was getting ready to leave the lot when I noticed some fool pull right up behind my car. Now, I was not parked facing out - I had parked in the very first space available and was facing in to another parking spot. This put the guy right smack in the middle of the main lane in the parking lot. WTF #1. He sat there for about 30 seconds (I was fiddling with my seatbelt and the volume controls), and then he honked at me. WTF #2. At first I figured maybe I just had crazy luck and had taken the favorite parking space of some obsessive-compulsive nut, but then I noticed that the two passengers in the car were a skinny white guy (passenger) and a not-so-skinny black guy (driver), and they were both eyeballing my license plate and chattering at each other.

Hmmm. Time to go.

I pulled out of the parking lot on to hwy 50, and they followed me, but at a bit of a distance. At the first red light I came to, they pulled up right behind me with a turn signal blinking. When I moved on through as the light changed, they continued to follow me at a distance. Next red light, same thing - they pulled up behind with a blinker but then continued following. WTF #3.

It almost seemed like they would follow me out of town, but at the second to last light I decided to end the shenanigans, and gunned WOT at the green light just to get the hell away from them. As their headlights quickly shrunk in my rearview, I saw them finally turn around and drive back in to Carson.

So here's my question for the few guys around here that I know are in to a bit of street racing: were these clownshoes trying to divert me to a race? If they were, it was totally new to me. Most fuckers just rev on me, but these guys were obviously trying to point me down side roads. And they were being pussies about it, too. They never pulled up next to me or tried to gesture - just trailed me and blinked at the stop lights.

Note that I couldn't tell what kind of car it was, since it was behind me the whole time. I'm pretty sure it wasn't someone from SECCS - I figure if it was, they would have pulled up alongside and waved like a normal person.

MikeK 2006-03-01 11:45 PM

Try driving an STi around. I get hassled by these retards EVERY SINGLE TIME I DRIVE! And by every single time I drive, I mean at least 1 in 10 times. I usually just drive 10 mph under the limit until they go away.

M3n2c3 2006-03-01 11:47 PM

Yeah, I tried going a little under the limit to see if they would get sick of me, but they just kept following at a distance of about 20-30 yards.

MPREZIV 2006-03-02 07:32 AM

They were trying to warn you with the blinker, about the AXE WIELDING MANIAC IN YOUR BACK SEAT!

Okay, maybe not. I watch too many scary movies.

Try this: buy a subi, and put a BIG wing on the back, built by a racing oriented company, (prodrive) and then two years later have another subi come out from the manufacturer with a similar wing attached to the back, and 300 hp. Every mustang/camaro driving asshat in the world revs on me, because despite the fact that my car looks NOTHING like an STI, they assume it is one...

I know your pain J.

JonnydaJibba 2006-03-02 08:17 AM

Yeah that stinks. I think the only way that you could let them know you don't want to race is a led sign on the back that says "GO AWAY."

Dean 2006-03-02 08:54 AM

Which blinker? Left is right, Right is wrong... :) Maybe they were trying to hit on you because of your nice car. :)

doubleurx 2006-03-02 09:24 AM

That was me and a buddy of mine. You were in my parking spot and I was pissed!

Evo Mike 2006-03-02 09:39 AM

yeah, i get that pretty often too.. usually just drive slow for a bit.. like mike K said.. but if it's some kid fool in his STi EVO, vette, whatever.. i'll straight up toast their ass after being messed with.

.. retards in their hondas.. just aren't worth the risk/speeding ticket

cody 2006-03-02 09:40 AM

Wierd.

GarySheehan 2006-03-02 10:06 AM

That same thing happened to me the other day when I was playing GT4! Weird...

Just one more reason to stay wingless!

Aaaaand. . . you had been playing for how many straight hours? :P

A1337STI 2006-03-03 10:30 AM

they obviously wanted you to pull over. they May have just wanted to talk about your car, since with that plate you are obviously an enthusiast. They may have wanted you to pull over to discuss a possible race .

its mostly likely one of those 2. they may have wanted to rob you though. you just never know these days. generally i go with my insticts. if it feels really wrong, just drive away, drive to a police station, or a very crowded place. (wallmart maybe?)
Wow, how the heck do i drive around in a Blue STI wigh gold Rims and I've only ever had 1 guy want to race me. and he was working at an oil change place. (some kit with a neon SRT-4) . i only had my car about 3 weeks or so and didn't want to risk a ticket to race a neon :P even with this "Stage 3 upgrade kit " or what ever he was claiming... Maybe its the skirack i put on shortly after buying the car. ? could be that i'm in tahoe and not carson. does seem to be a ton of rice rockets down there.

 This wasn't in Sacramento area was it?

A1337STI 2006-03-03 12:38 PM

nope down in carson. the jiffy lube by wallmart. some kid with (red i think) SRT-4 claiming he could definatly beat me , this and that. lmao i think i told him something like "well if you are promising that you are gonna beat me, why do i want to bother racing?" lol he wanted to race real bad. then when i said maybe he quickly told me had to run errands and couldn't :P lmao lmao peeps are funny. oh well at least he bought an american made car. someone gets to keep a job ;) yay !
BTW i love the handle "Ban SUVS" i wish they would ban them on all roads not privately owned :p lol . that would make a cool plate :P BTW BANSUVS is currently available as a plate in NV ... (i'de be tempted to get it cuase damn that would be funny to see on an sti, but i'de just be ripping off yer idea) :p

i am tempted though

Are you sure it wasn't that ugly bronze-orange color? Some doof in an orange SRT-4 revved at me on Stewart last week. I had my wife in the car, and I'm not one for street racing, so I just shot him a look that said, "what, you want to race me to 35mph??" Then the wife and I proceeded to have a good laugh as he peeled away at the green. SCREEEEEEEEEEE! My wife commented that with as long as he was waiting for traction, I probably could have taken him to 35mph. Doubtful, but it's always fun to watch someone wish they had AWD.

A1337STI 2006-03-03 01:00 PM

Yes actually it probably was orange. lmao he was very proud of his stage what ever upgrade and kept showing me his car. and while i thought his enthiasm was cool. i couldn't care less about a FWD car. ya could have very well been orange. ;) probably the same guy. he was proudly showing me his Burn out marks (right in front of the jiffy lube he works at)
guess i Have done some doughnuts @ the end of the court where i work at (after coming back from a kings game in sac, it was empty and 12:00 at night (its all offices)) didn't want to race him until 35? lol don't blame ya.

street racing would be cool, but the whole no reward, risk of a ticket, or much worse hitting some by stander as they step out to check their mail or what have you ... guess if the setting was 100% right .

No, it's never cool. It sucks to drive an STi around like normal person because so many people drive around racing every fuckin car they pull up next to.

And BTW, What the fuck are you talking about? I mean in general, do you ever shut up.?

I know I don't appreciate reading flamage like that. ^^^

sybir 2006-03-03 03:33 PM

I don't appreciate someone trying to justify street racing if the "setting is right."

There's no reason for it at any time, and it gives all of us a bad name.

Yeah, the setting is never right. You can never be 100% sure that other people aren't there.

I don't mean to start shit at all Matt. I honestly just think that you guys have an awesome club, but many of you go past a good hearted jab and are downright rude sometimes. I mean it's your club, so more power to you. I guess I should just mind my own business, but I do think you can get your point across without bing so rude. I'll be quiet now.

A1337STI 2006-03-03 03:55 PM

well that's one way to greet a new member :p (when I met everyone remind me to buy everyone a drink, EXCEPT YOU) ;)

i'm not condoning street racing, or telling anyone what not to do. i'm a libertarian. everyone will have to figure out what they should/ shouldn't do as a grown adult and take responbility for all of their actions at all times.

don't know if you saw the speed channel RedLine thingy evo vs evo street race on los vegas bld. the cops shut the street down for it, security , fences, but i'm sure that's an other case where the setting is not right ? huh mr Never never ? :P what ever :P so i Got excited for a new club/ forum and posted a whole bunch in the flurry of a few days. SORRY

I'm sure Matt's just having one of those days. Chances are he just spent 8 hours driving a big rig over the pass in the snow.

He's clearly speaking with his moderator had off... otherwise there'd be locked threads all over the place. So don't take his opinion as a club policy. Take it as someone bitching about something that's bothering him... you know like 80% of the posts on this board.

MattR 2006-03-03 03:57 PM

Cody, I did not set out to be rude...But I know it did come across pretty harsh. Honestly, I just get really irritated when I want to catch up on what's going on in the group and I have to weed though street racing, BOV popping replies and unending rambling. I'm grumpy today.

cody 2006-03-03 04:00 PM

Well yah, I think we can all agree A1337STI is post whoring the shit out of the forum. I'm just saying be more funny when you ridicule him. :P

Racing on a closed course w/ cops and safety all over the place clearly isn't street racing. Or would you call the Long Beach Grand Prix or the Monaco F1 race "street racing"?

And it is the policy of this club/board to ban street racing posts. We simply do not, under *any* circumstances, condone illegal contests of speed.

And feel free to refer to the lakemonster thread you bumped if you'd like to see what happens when people join and immediately begin to insult the founders of the club. You're certainly free to like/dislike whoever you want, but as they say, if you shoot from the hip you're apt to shoot yourself in the ass.

Was Matt's comment a little harsh? Yeah I'd say so, but you're the one that's postwhoring the board w/o having been here long enough to know the dynamic of the forums. As with any message board, lurking for a while and figuring out who's who, and how things operate before posting up a storm is always adviseable.

A1337STI 2006-03-03 04:14 PM

1) guess i don't clearly understand what street racing means or is , as i don't ,
2) gotcha, only street racing topics allowed are how bad it is, or some guys failed attempt to bait you into a race
3) Yes it was harsh, but i'm a big fan of free speach. just leave it as is.
4) if he's gonna ban me, cuase i'll buy everyone but him a drink, so be it.
5) yes i post whored. (i got excited about a new forum and got carried away)

Heh. If a sorry looking '93 Ford Escort with Konigs gets hassled, I'm not surprised you do.

SpecB#127 2006-03-04 06:04 PM

I used to get revved on all the time when I had my Celica GT-S, so I know your pain. Since I bought the Spec B, I don't think anyone has revved me.

However, the other day by the Wal Mart in south Carson City, someone in a 240SX with a SR20DET conversion thought he could ride my ass, and I had to show him otherwise. :D

Legacies are pretty unassuming. . . I think most people don't expect a Legacy GT to be able to haul ass they way it can.
