I have a bad feeling that Dr. Evil is behind this and they intentionally left out the quotation marks around accidentally.

Libila 2006-09-24 08:21 PM

Should make for an intersting year once it's turned on.

Nick Koan 2006-09-24 08:40 PM

Great.

I better get my crowbar ready.

I was playing HL2: Episode One not but twenty minutes ago.

I'm wondering how the machine will contain these blasts and the possible openings of a black hole? Also, what exactly will happen if a black hole opens? What kind of force draws things in to a black hole? Is it suction like puncturing a pressurized chamber or some odd reverse in gravity?

For the sake of feeling insignificant- http://atinyglimpse.ytmnd.com/

MPREZIV 2006-09-25 07:38 AM

Ah hell. We're doomed. I kinda see this as one of those "can't leave well enough alone" situations.

Dean 2006-09-25 08:08 AM

I think making black holes should really wait until we have perfected the ability to relocate the entire population if they screw up.

Or better yet, can do the experiment somewhere way far away so if it goes wrong, it doesn't affect Earth.

Don't these people watch Star Trek, etc...

JonnydaJibba 2006-09-25 08:18 AM

Ah fucking scientists. There was a reason I always shot them first in Goldeneye.

I love how Titor always pops up whenever there is some new scientific breakthrough or conflict in the world. "Look, Titor was right!!! Get out of teh cities!!1"

Personally I think the impending zombie plague is going to get us, not nuclear war.

Blackholes are ruining autocross.

Whether or not Titor is fake (and I'm pretty sure it's a hoax... check out the old Titor message boards where the super-geeks over analize the crap out of anything Titor posted), it's *very* entertaining and has a *ton* of stuff embedded in real physics, including the creation/use of micro singularities.

It's just good old fashioned gravity. It gets exponentially stronger as you get closer. I remember learning of a process called "spaghetification" which basically means objects get stretched out as they aproach the opening of a black hole.

tysonK 2006-09-25 05:07 PM

I'm gonna use the mini-reverse gravity from the mini-blackhole to spool my turbo and own everyone,....everyone.

Now there is a zero emissions vehicle, and you get forced induction or should I say suction without requiring a turbo. Just stuck one of them there mini black holes in your exhaust manifold at the collector, and then cap it off. No cat, or muffler, etc. required.

You just have to swap out your black hole when it starts getting heavy. Just make sure it is centered and low, and it shouldn't effect handling much.

You might need an upgraded alternator to run the magnetic containment system though. :)

Kevin M 2006-09-26 01:41 PM

I suggest using the mini black holes as obstacles. That way, the ideal apex will slingshot you through to the next corner. Missing it wide costs you time, and clipping it off is more than a 2 second penalty...

Is it it a DNF if you get sucked into a mini black hole and come out another one but still on course?

Kevin M 2006-09-26 01:58 PM

Not if the first mini black hole is still upright and touching the chalk box.

And then we can make a course called the Kessel Run and see who can do it in the fewest number of parsecs.

/end me now for making such an awful geeky joke that even I'm ashamed of.

You wanna get geeky... the reason Han and Chewie's Kessle run is impressive is not because they're fast (remember a parsec is a unit of distance, not time or speed), it's because they're such great smugglers they can run straight through the Emperial blockades thus avoiding taking the "long route" that all the crappier smugglers have to take to avoid the heat that the Falcon can either out-run, out-fight, or out-smart.

Pat R. 2006-09-26 06:31 PM

Nick, you should know better than to bring a geek knife to a geek gun fight.

Happy to oblige :D

And just for the geek record, according to the Star Wars expanded universe the Kessel run takes pilots past the Maw Cluster, a dangerous group of black holes. The contest comes from trying to shorten the distance of the run, which is normally measured at a safe 18 parsecs. For Solo to have taken it in 12 parsecs means that not only does he have a fast, durable ship that can come dangerously close to the Maw Cluster, but also balls made of durasteel.

Winner! Scott was close too. No Imperial blockades, just patrols. Government piracy FTW!

Thats nice and all but did you know that Lucas stole the idea for the original three films from an old Samuri film called "The Hidden Fortress". Thats why 4,5, and 6 kicked ass, and 1,2, and 3 sucked.

Wait, Samurai had spaceships? +500 cool factor for teh Samurai! :P

4, 5, and 6 rocked because Lucas was young, starry-eyed, and headstrong. 5, which is widely regarded as being the best of the six, was so good because Lucas was busy starting his business and had to be willing to give up some control to two other screenplay writers and an obviously superior director: Irvin Kershner. I'd also like to point out that 6, while still good, was a huge step down from 5.

1, 2, and 3 "sucked" (I really liked 3, actually) because now Lucas is older, divorced, more jaded, and still headstrong, and now he takes full control of writing and directing the films. You can see it in the character interactions; the heart is gone and the characters have little complexity.

:P

Of course Samurais didn't have spaceships, but that doesn't change the fact that Lucas is a hack and stole the basic idea from "The Hidden Fortress". If you don't believe me watch the film.

M3n2c3 2006-09-26 11:25 PM

I'll have to watch it sometime. Are you talking about full plot elements, or are you talking about the basic core ideas used in Star Wars? Elements such as the heroic youth, princess in distress, wise old man, cocky sidekick, fanciful powers, and toppling an evil overbearing empire were around long before The Hidden Fortress.

The movies draw heavily from folklore and traditional ideas of good vs. evil; that's one of the reasons people can connect with them so easily.

Duckie 2006-09-27 01:49 AM

No one stole shit unless you want to go back to mythology...shouldn't even have to put a name on which story I am talking about it is so obvious.

Watch it and you'll see what I mean. Alot of the core ideas are taken from this old film, too many, if you ask me.

omg, this reminds me of something that happened at nationals -- one of my competitors hit a cone somehow cutting off the top half and sent it flying, but the bottom half with base stayed in the box. The officials declared no penalty. I just wish someone had video of it.

I'm installing giant razor blades on my front bumper.

Double Phister 2006-10-03 02:41 PM

How much could you chop off and get away with?

M3n2c3 2006-10-03 05:40 PM

Probably a good chunk of it, as long as the base is in the box. Now I don't want to work when Scott's taking his runs. :P
