Free Track Day?
I just got off the phone with Rusty at C&C Fuel Injection and he mentioned that today he heard that there may be a free track day this Monday, 10/23/06 at Reno Fernely Raceway.
I checked their website and didn't see anything and it sounds unlikely. Has anybody heard anything about it? |
I think thats an oxymoron!

wow, that awesome.
|
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..... y does this happen to me always
something awesome that I would love to do with my car and what happens...... IT GETS SMASHED!!!!!! |
There's a good chance that there will be a new addition to the PFR Racing stable doing some installation laps at this event.
|
I'd love to get out there, but I've got no car and no time. Hell, I've got a free test and tune coupon that I probably won't use between now and Jan when it expires... anyone wanna buy it off me? It's a $170 value!
|
Hmmmm, I forsee my workweek starting on Tuesday. :D
I'll have to call Mike tomorrow. I'll post up anything I find out. |
WOOOOOOW, I love that I just took off 4 days of work because I am sick. What luck
|
Can you have co-drivers on track days?
|
Do I need a rollbar? I might have to take 4 hr lunch.
|
This isn't a "track day". More than likely this will be run as a test-n-tune, which means you'll need at least a novice race license or a track pass from the driving school. If you've run trials or something, you can probably talk your way onto the track if some of the RFR people recognize you... but since this is being run by the new school, who knows who they'll let out there.

Team and Scuderia are redundant. Just had to throw that in.

Alright, here's the deal...talked to Mike and basically, they just want to get cars out there for the story KOLO is doing. He thinks they'll probably have an advanced and a beginner run group. The beginner run group will be very structured with some instructors available to drive your car or to ride along with you. It will basically be a "follow the leader" (instructor) format though. The advanced run group will be "less structured" though. To run in the advanced group, you'll need to show that you’re experienced, and having a "race" license will help.
I asked about the rollbar, and you do need one. He mentioned the Z3's are ok because of the factory roll over protection but neither of us knows about S2000’s. It’s a track requirement. The normal RFR requirement that you have some form of race license will not apply to the beginners out there. You don’t need one. You will, of course, need a helmet though. He said RFR has a few old ones, but it doesn’t sound like showing up without a helmet will be a safe bet. I’m going to finally pick one up from Summit probably. He said if you talk to Rhonda at Summit about the Pro-Control Academy discount, she’ll hook you up. He said the discount varies depending on what helmet you want. Passengers and co-drivers with a helmet are allowed as long as they are experienced racers or otherwise mature and responsible individuals (I’m paraphrasing). If you’re interested, you’ll need to show up prior to 10am but he suggested you be there by 9 or 9:30 to get set up and organized. Please post up here if you intend to go as Mike asked me to let him know how many of us will be coming. I’m going. Hopefully I’ll score an instructor and be allowed to run advanced. |

From an email I just got:
Hello Reno SCCA Members and Friends, Interested in some free time on the track at Reno-Fernley? On Monday, Oct. 23rd, the new driving school at R-F, ProControl Driving Academy, is expecting Channel 8 to come out to do a segment, and ProControl would like to have cars on the track to give an action backdrop for the video. ProControl will be setting up between 9 and 9:30, and the TV people are expected around 10. ProControl says they've got the track for four hours or so. Depending on who shows up, they may divide people into run groups -- expert, novice, and so on -- for safety. If someone shows up with no track experience, ProControl expects to be demonstrating their instruction techniques. Some sessions may be following behind a lead car. Bottom line is, there's no guarantee you'll simply be turned loose, but at least you'll be getting time on track and you'll also be helping the cause of track events in the Reno area. Remember that this isn't an SCCA event, so you're on your own for things like liability. Call Mike Dietel of ProControl at (775) 338-2183 for more info. -- Jim Gandy, jrgandy@peoplepc. com Thank you, Jim Gandy |

Oooh i'm down. If i have to call in sick/dead @ work to do it then so be it :)

I have never been to the track or any track events, but am very interested in starting this next season. I was just curious if i would be able to run my STI even though i don't have a rollbar or any track experience yet. i would love to get out there monday and check out how things work. Any input would be grand. |
If it's your first time, monday would be a bad time to go to the track. Go to a more structured event where you are guaranteed to have an instructor with you all day, you will be safer and learn much, much faster.

I just talk to Mike from Procontrol. He said that factory rollbar is ok, S2000 has a hoop behind the seat. So I guess I will take 4hr Lunch on Monday.

Right now the interior is exterior.

OK Pat please help!! What tire pressure should I run for fun track? Anything else should I do?
|
If the tires on your car are anything like the S02s that came on mine then they have pretty stiff sidewalls and you should be alright leaving them at the normal street pressures.

This may be possible for me as well. I still haven't put the snow tires on yet. Do we need to sign up or just show up before 10.
I have no racing license, but I think they may remember me for better or worse! |
You don't need to sign up, but Mike asks that you call him, or instead you can just post up before mid-Sunday that you're going and I'll give him a tally of people who RSVP'd to this thread Sunday evening.
|
Count me in Nat with S2000 beginner don't know anything class. Should we meet up to drive together?
|
I just put new tires on last week. How bad does track day affect tread life?
|
Depends on the tires, but your tires will definitely take a hit.
|
They're not snow tires are they? If so, no track for you. They'll die a horrible death out there.
|
No they are Toyo. I have snow tires ready for winter. I just don't wana hurt the toyo's too bad that i would have to replace them and spend more cash come spring time.
|
Since this event sounds fairly unstructured, I'd wait to start with either autocross or an actual Driver's School. It's always fun to make light of Cody's spin, but he got ridiculously lucky.
I haven't tracked my car so I'm not sure exactly what it does to treadlife, but I am certain that it punishes the ENTIRE car, especially the wear items (rotors, pads, tires, etc). Listening to folk like Scott and Dean talk about their cars makes it sound like you get a couple years' daily driving worth of abuse in a season or less of tracking. And I do know that they go through a lot of tires. Of course, I'm forced to take the conservative approach to motorsports, as I'm racing my daily driver and can't really afford to have it out of service for more than a day. If you're not worried about the car much, then have at it. :D |
I use my daily car too all stock. Just have fun don't go all out.
|
Ya she's my daily driver as well. And with my payments and how expensive it is to replace such items, i might be throwing myself to the wolves if I go to the event. Damn it wouldbe nice to have an unlimited bank account....
