Firefox 3

Anybody tried RC2 yet? Not sure I want to be a guinea pig, but it sounds like they have made it even faster in addition to new bells and whistles...

sperry 2008-06-06 12:34 PM

I've had RC1 running on my secondary PC for a week or so. Seems pretty stable.

kidatari 2008-06-06 01:27 PM

+1 for using RC1 as well. I've been running the betas for over a month, Firefox 3 is great!

van 2008-06-06 01:59 PM

opera.com/

Kunikos 2008-06-06 02:12 PM

only dirty scandies use opera

also +1 for using rc1 well over the last few weeks on both work and home pcs (xp and vista, respectively)

i did a "check for update" and it didn't find anything from within firefox-- is rc2 not a push-down update?

Mine just updated about 10 minutes ago.

Firefox wisely staggers the push updates.

Wtf is a scandie? google says I'm a restaurant:) . I prefer my memory be used by apps besides my internet browser

Nick Koan 2008-06-06 02:35 PM

Scandinavians?

tysonK 2008-06-06 03:05 PM

Which RC is this?

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080404 Firefox/2.0.0.14

sperry 2008-06-06 03:07 PM

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008051206 Firefox/3.0

tysonK 2008-06-06 03:11 PM

I see.

my check for updates did nothing, yet.

Nick Koan 2008-06-06 03:12 PM

Well, Firefox 2.0 will not pull down an update for Firefox 3 pre-release stuff.

You'd need to go download that explicitly.

tysonK 2008-06-06 03:15 PM

oh. I'll just wait.

I guess you missed all the hub-bub about Firefox using FAR less memory in version 3 than it used to in version 2 (and memory related bugs fixed). Also, Opera doesn't support extensions so it's lame.

van 2008-06-06 03:38 PM

Well, Opera thinks you're lame so there...

booya

sperry 2008-06-06 04:12 PM

All I know about Opera was that the one time I tried installing it, not only was it so buggy that it crashed perpetually, it actually whacked my system so hard I had to reinstall windows.

Granted, that was in the Win95 era... but still. Screw Opera.

but that was 10+ yrs ago, Its much better now. It doesn't have all the plugins and shit but it does the basic stuff beautifully, and crash free! I have ff on this comp and I try to go back but I just can't get into it. I do use safari from time to time for zillow though.

Kunikos 2008-06-08 08:54 AM

safari is slow as dog shit, doesn't support extensions (without hacking) and doesn't have any of the features that opera has... also, it doesn't obey Apple's own HCI guidelines, which is hilarity

Nick Koan 2008-06-12 03:45 PM

Nice writeup on all the new features of FF3.

van 2008-06-13 03:30 PM

opera 9.5 out yesterday!

Dean 2008-06-13 04:41 PM

Think RC3 is out. I think I'll wait until it is released.

You won't have to wait long, it comes out next Tuesday.

Nick Koan 2008-06-17 09:12 AM

Its out today, as of 1PM EST (or 10AM here). They are trying to break the record for most downloads in a 24 hour period.

The servers are slammed right now.

I can't seem to reach mozilla.com or getfirefox.com

sperry 2008-06-17 09:49 AM

I just switched my main browser over to RC3 yesterday.

I just wish the tab mix plus plugin comes out soon.

Kunikos 2008-06-17 11:45 AM

FF3 final is out:

The first hour the entire download section was down, according to another person here at work.

Dean 2008-06-17 12:07 PM

I got it.

Tab Mix Plus and IE tab don't work which means I lost all my session info and am stuck launching IE occasionally.

I never could get the 2.5 built-in session manager to meet my needs, and now I can't even find it in 3.0??? And help is not working... :(

Not impressed so far. in search of add-on fixes now but not holding my breath.

Kunikos 2008-06-17 12:10 PM

Weird, IE Tab works for me. :)

Nick Koan 2008-06-17 12:11 PM

The download page still gives me links to 2.0.0.14 (or whatever the latest 2.0 release is).

I guess I could get RC3, but I'll just wait.

Kunikos 2008-06-17 12:15 PM

Looks like they're rotating the homepage between the two versions.

http://Firefox.com = http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ And it is right on the front page...

Hell, I attached it.

Found a dev version of Tab Mix and all my sessions are back  , now in search of working IEtab

Yeah, looks like the load balancing is off.

I finally got it to connect me to the new page, after about 10 refreshes.

Nick Koan 2008-06-17 12:20 PM

lol, it says Firefox 3 on the page now, but the link still tries to download 2.0.0.14.

Argh.

Nick Koan 2008-06-17 12:25 PM

Ooh, I used my leet hacking skills to finally download the file.

Now, I wonder if its the right one

sybir 2008-06-17 12:26 PM

FWIW, RC3 kicks ass. I'm just waiting to upgrade my home box until more of the plugins get ported over.

sperry 2008-06-17 12:31 PM

My IE Tab updated itself automatically to work with the RC's. v1.5.20080310

Where do you get the dev Tab Mix Plus?

That link just worked for me... d/ling now.

Dean 2008-06-17 12:34 PM

Guess what... Firefox's servers are faster than ours.

Now, where'd you get Tab Mix Plus?

sperry 2008-06-17 12:53 PM

Nevermind, I hit the TMP forums and here's the latest dev build for those that care:

http://tmp.garyr.net/tab_mix_plus-dev-build.xpi

Dean 2008-06-17 01:05 PM

IE is working now. it downloaded an update after the download, but the update failed on first launch. manually DLed the latest version and am working fine.

All my add-ons are good to go.

Why didn't they fix the built in session manager or just adopt the tab-mix code.

cody 2008-06-17 01:50 PM

Huh?

Kunikos 2008-06-24 11:56 AM

All I want from TMP are tab switch order choice and multi-row. The rest I could care less about. I couldn't get the dev version's multi-row to work.

 Sharing is caring.

Mike once told me he didn't like my rear window sticker. I told him I understood as it's rather obnoxious. He replied that that wasn't it, but it should say, "You've just got beaten by a wagon :P".

This has been a pet peeve of mine for about 30 years, but I just gave up like 10 years ago. You know what they say...

Wait, that's not what "they" say. That's another pet peeve -the guy never said all ignorance is bliss!

;)
