Wanted: Semi-recent PCI Video card (2003/4ish)

I got rid of all my ancient PCI Video cards some time ago. They were all way to slow anyway.

Looking for something from like a P4 generation 2003/4ish or newer system. it will likely have a minimum of 64Mb of Ram.

Something like a GeForce 5000 or 6000 series or Radeon ES1000, 8000-9000 series.

I have a couple similar or better AGP or PCIE cards for trade if you need one.

ScottyS 2009-03-03 02:15 PM

I have PCI-E but no regular 33mhz PCI cards.

Nope, needs to be a classic PCI card... I have spare PCI-E as well.

Nick Koan 2009-03-03 03:48 PM

I was all AGP by that time. I might have a PCI card circa 1998 laying around.

I know, so was I. No Thanks.

Should be able to find something for $15-20 on ebay, that's what I've done when setting up multi-monitor setups in the past.

Dean 2009-03-03 04:37 PM

Really, on ebay, they sell stuff?

Dey do, for realz.

Dean 2009-03-03 06:37 PM

Forget it. Apparently a PCI card will not resolve my issue. It will still suck, only via PCI vs. sucking via embedded AGP. :(

word, son. dey be havin' all KINDS of that shiz in the intrawebs.

And yeah, it's a stupid suggestion, but no less sensible than "does anyone have a particular card made between this year and this year with this particular spec" and being choosy about it. When I need something specific, I search for it instead of asking for it to come to me.

But I'm weird.

I want an adult size Lightning McQueen race car bed. Anybody have one lying around?

I hear you, but also know there are a bunch of tech pack rats in our group, and I am a cheap bastard! :) No harm, no foul.

ScottyS 2009-03-03 09:06 PM

Oh, you were circumventing embedded AGP. Yah, PCI 32-bit is not good for graphics at any modern level. I figured it was a triple-monitor mod, which was the last thing I used a PCI card for.

No, it was a bit more sinister or diabolical maybe than that. For the OS I am working with, there is no decent driver support for the Intel on-board or any PCI based card, so I am stuck with the default limited functionality SVGA driver either way. :( At least it is working.

Yes. Wait, what...? Oh, no.

Care to name this supportless OS?

Dewey 2009-03-05 11:15 AM

I have a 6600gt with either 256 or 128..

Dean 2009-03-05 12:19 PM

That is a new enough card, but as far as I can tell, there is no PCI version of the 6600. only AGP and PCI-E.

Are you sure it is PCI?

Lack of an AGP or PCI-E slot is really the problem with this system. :(

There are optimized drivers for the AGP and PCI-E cards, but no joy on the PCI cards or the on-board Intel AGP :(

A1337STI 2009-03-05 01:34 PM

Hey what are you trying to run anyways?

I have an old PCI card somewhere, maybe a few if i didn't huck them already. they are mostly garbage though, i have a Diamond 550 , or 770 PCI card somewhere.... it was a great card in ... 98 ....

Dean 2009-03-05 02:08 PM

Don't need vintage stuff, that is for sure.

Lets just say it is a GUI *NIX variant that normally runs on semi-proprietary hardware named after a fruit. ;)

cody 2009-03-05 02:18 PM

Oh, a passionfruit box. Nice.

cody 2009-03-05 02:41 PM

Alright, I think most of these are AGP but at least two are PCI. All are probably older than you'd like, but let me know if you want one. I have some old P3 machines that may have something too but again, probably too old. Yes the camera is probably as old as the cards. :|

Dean 2009-03-05 03:06 PM

No thanks Cody.

ScottyS 2009-03-05 03:13 PM

Measure those PCI cards with your drafting triangle to make sure!!!!

cody 2009-03-05 03:23 PM

How about a Rage II+
113-40110-100
(C)1997
PN 109-40100-00
1996 ATI Technologies
P/N 1024011600 511686
S/N WU 7 52 13485
Made in Taiwan

sperry 2009-03-05 03:37 PM

Everyone computer savvy enough to have bought the level of card you're looking for (Radeon 9000's, etc) were also savvy enough to be using AGP by then. You're simply not going to find what you're looking for, clearly no one here has something just lying around.

Here's a sampling of what it's gonna cost:

$20 ATI Rage 128: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...8P-32P&cat=VCD
$40 Radeon 9000 128: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...0-P128&cat=VCD
$45 GeForce FX 5200: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...128-CO&cat=VCD

But chances are, you'll have way more success just dual booting a newer PC rather than trying to get some old crappy MB and video card to support OSX.

Dean 2009-03-05 04:08 PM

As I said, even the latest PCI card is unlikely to work and just not worth spending any money on. There just aren't any PCI drivers or drivers that go back to any of the PCI generation GPUs might be a better way to put it. :(

Again, the on-board works, just with limited resolution and no optimized driver. There actually was a 10.4.1 kext for the IEG2, but it was never updated and will not work on any higher rev.

It has been fun getting both Leo and Tigger working on the thing. I am trying to make it so it it will triple boot. Windows on Primary master, Tigger on primary Slave P1, and Leo on P2. Getting the windows boot loader and Darwin working together I may just make it. Tigger from a slave at all was a challenge. Leo was happy as slave P1, but is complaining about being P2. It may not be possible, but fun trying.

In many ways this is kind of like getting an old 3.x Novell server with jumper/dip switched interrupts and memory addresses on cards and dependent drivers back in the dark ages. You have to actually know what is in the machine to make it work. Definitely not a 1 button install.

The other thing that is weird is that even though it is a Prescott SSE3 P4, it does not like the SSE3 kernel for Tigger.

tysonK 2009-03-05 04:45 PM

Unless this computer thing supports some kind of awesome porn website, I don't see the point.

Dean 2009-03-05 04:49 PM

I'm a nerd.

That is all.

zapjacks 2009-03-05 05:00 PM

I have my ATI Radeon 9250 PCI card, that I don't use, because I got an nvidia built into my new motherboard...

I'll sell it for $100, cause I have to pay off two speeding tickets... haha lucky me :P

I also have installation disc, and it was never used, just collecting dust :P

No Thanks, no driver, and no cash.

Wait, what about a different MB, Dean? I have two spare Centrino 1.73's you can have if you find a board for them! lol. And a stick of PC2100.

Yeah, an older setup is really going to help... A dual core would be the only real next step up. Another P4 MB with an AGP or PCI-E slot might work, but this was the best test bed machine I had lying around. I really don't want it on any of the 4 other similar or faster P4ish machines I have that I use for real purposes. (2 Servers, multimedia PC and primary workstation)

I have an old Blueberry iMac with Tiger on it that I only really use to support my parents who have macs. Even with a gig of RAM and a 7200RPM drive, it is quite slow (G3-450 I think)

This was just kind of a challenge to see what I could get to work without spending any money. In many ways, it was like the old days of Windows DLL hell and Linux package dependencies before APT and YUM made everything mostly better. Quite primitive in this day of one button installers and automatic updates.

As far as I can tell, neither T or L will boot from a slave drive from anything but P1. They both Panic even though Darwin correctly identifies them. T actually won't boot even from P1 as slave via Darwin, but Cash0 run from Windows boot.ini finds it and starts it correctly. I am going to put one of them on a different drive on the Secondary master and see if I can get to all 3 that way. There doesn't appear to be a way to control what Cash0 does. It links to whatever HFS+ it finds first as far as I can tell.

Yes, this is how unemployed nerds entertain themselves after they have completed the Internet. :P

And Tyson, there is no awesome porn on the intarweb, only bad-good and that may be generous. All awesome porn is live and interactive!

oh.. my bad. i didnt read close enough to see that you need a pci and not pci-e. the card i have is pci-e.

Funny how you can't find any older computer stuff when you need it. Let me look around I have probably thrown 10 or 20 of those away in the last 2 months.

Don't bother, I don't need it any more. Now if you have a spare Core 2 system lying around waiting to be thrown out, let me know. :)
