Search for a new meet location???
Put up or shut up... (I think that is what Scott is saying in the main meet thread, and I agree.)
People just blindly throwing out different dates, times and general locations doesn't get anything done. Would anybody be interested in participating in a search for a new meet site? Over the weekend? Tuesday night??? I'm thinking it should be inside the loop, within a few blocks of a freeway exit. Probably some Google maps searches are in order before we even head out anywhere... Anybody in, or not? |
I'm in. I'm off all weekend until Tuesday.
|
I'm in. We should have a list of what makes up an "ideal location"
1. Make sure to find out if the place has a happy hour at the time we will be meeting;) 2. Safe easy parking 3. Willing to serve a group 4. Location close to freeway exit 5. Good food 6. Reasonable prices |
Don't forget "variety of food". Joe Bob's is "good food", but their menu consists of fried chicken plus some configuration of starch.
|
We should just meet at Renown and eat in the cafeteria.

But really... this is a good idea. I think you have your work cut out for you to meet all the criteria. I would be able to go along on Monday or Tuesday. What about places that are used to having car meets? I have never been to either, but Joe's Diner and A&W have regular meets I think for the hot rod crowd. I doubt these places have much variety food-wise, so it is just a thought. Another idea - what about places that have more than one restaurant sharing the same parking lot? That way it can easily be changed up every week/month/whatever. The only example I can think of is where Hacienda is next to Flowing Tide on N. McCarran, but I bet there are others. I would almost suggest the GSR with its huge parking lot and variety of food options, but I think the logistics of getting everybody (at differing arrival times) from the remote parking lot to the eating place would be troublesome. Then again who doesn't have a cell phone these days? |
Hacienda/Tide would be a winner, but the parking lot there tends to get pretty full. I live right around the corner from there though, so I'll keep an eye on it for the next couple of weeknights. Maybe there will be room for us.
|
Sorry I dropped off this thread. I was focused on PDX instructor school and PDX since whenever...
I also thought of GSR, especially if the liked SCCA being there for autocross... Heck, nothing preventing us from opening it up to a SCCA meet. (Not that we restrict it now.) You could meet and attendees vote on Buffet, Johny rockets, or whatever else is in there or have a set restaurant per week. You could even go over to the slick track for some driving grudge matches and to listen to Kevin whine about the cars not turning the way he wants them to. ;) I also like the Tide/Hacienda idea. The Tide used to love it when SCCA came on Sat. afternoons after Auto-X, and again, you could rotate between the two. |
I think A&W went out of business, or they were at least close if not. They would probably appreciate the business, and it's pretty much the center of Reno.
I've never been to the flowing tide or the hacienda, but it is pretty close to my house, especially compared to the tamarack. Not that I'm a regular attendee or anything, I'm just sayin |
Anybody been too Sullivans Sports Bar & Grill?
290 E Plumb Ln, Reno, NV - (775) 826-1155 I think it is in the Costco Center. |

Scott and I tested that place in 2003. Needless to say, it didn't work out that time. But its a good location.
|
The already suggested gsr? central location, variety of food? If they're going to support our autox I think we should try and return the favor.

I feel fat just thinking about it. :P

^I hate that place.

The GSR sounds like a good place. I might even show up! :)
|
I ate at the today. It was really good. You get two sides with your sandwich. The fries and salad were great and so were our sandwiches.
http://reno.metromix.com/restaurants...560724/content The nice waitress said they have a group of ten or so guys that come on Tuesdays and I could call the owner, Lisle to talk to him about it if we we're interested in moving the meet there... |
That is a pretty good location. Beer?

How varied is the menu? TVs? What does a burger/fries and a drink cost you out the door?
|
The menu seemed like standard pub fair, but I only gave it a once over and they were out of to go menus. The menu seemed varied enough.
I spent $27.65 for our two sandwiches (each comes with 2 sides) two Arnold Palmers and 20% tip. I'm not sure if burgers cost the same or not but that's about $14/person. It might be a buck/person more than the current location, but the prices seemed similar to me. |

Anybody want to go check out Sullivans and/or GSR Monday or Tuesday? I figure the weekend is a bad choice.
|
I'll go with you.
|
Tomorrow I can meet you at a possible location probably.
|
Anybody else up for Tues.?
Thoughts? Check out Sullivans then head to GSR, or the other way around? 6:00 or later? |
Sounds like a few of us are going to meet over at GSR on the northwest corner, closest to the giant swing, at about 6:30. Check out the different restaurants, what it takes to get the $7.77 buffet and have some food.
May check out Sullivan's afterwords. I called all the numbers I can find for them on the web and got disconnected messages. They may not exist anymore. Will cruise by on my way to GSR. |
In my experience, locals can get a "Comps Plus Card" which allows you and 3 others to get the $7.77 buffet. We tend to bring visitors there since it's such a good value.
|
Figured as much. Want to join us?
|
I do, but I shouldn't...
But with a more central location, I'm far more likely to go to meets. :) |
How do you get more central than the spaghetti bowl?
|
I was gonna go teh Devendra Banhart concert at GSR tonight but of course he canceled because Reno has no indie cred, lol.

Oh you were agreeing with the location, not contesting it. Roger that

GSR is OK.
Parking: No problem Food: --- Johnny Rockets. Burgers, sandwiches, etc. $15ish for Cheseburger/fries/coke. --- Coffee Shop: Coffee Shop + some International... $15+ --- Buffet: Multi-national Buffet. <$10.00 incl. tax/tip with Locals $7.77 deal. --- Port of Subs (No seating) --- Round Table[downstairs] (Damn, Forgot to check if they had Tuesday night buffet... Should have stuck our heads in.) --- Fancy shmancy Restaurants... $$$ We ate at the buffet around 7:00. Minimal wait for the four of us, mostly to pay, not for seating. They had large tables setup and a group of 15 or so was seated not long after us. Food was pretty good, especially for $7.77... Our waiter was decent, behind the buffet people were mostly useless. No TVs obviously and no Keno. :) It appears you can get the $7.77 deal without a players club card, but requires begging/whining. Getting a card took about 90 seconds. No forms. Not sure how much junk mail I will get. Good for at least 4 people, or probably as many as you put on one check. Johnny Rockets has space for all of us over on the right side, and you can kind of see the Sports Book TVs. We could meet there, but JRs is going to get old fast, and a bit more than Sully's $ wise. Buffet is not bad, but not as comfortable for lack of a better word as Sully's. Sullivan's is no more. It is now "Rub's Pub and Grille" (Should be Pub and Grub IMHO). Looks like they just had or are just having their grand opening. (sign still hanging outside) It was a ghost town at 6:20 when I stuck my head in. It looked nice though. We didn't stop by later, so no menu info. Parking would be fine as that end of the Costco parking lot is dead. maybe that is next week's outing. Might be like "the 4th Turn" was with us being almost the only ones in there which is fine until they go out of business. |
Anybody interested in checking another place out tonight?
I am probably going to do some scouting early this afternoon and then would probably have dinner at one place or check out a few with folks and pick one for dinner depending on what I find. |
When my trailer threw 1/2 the tread off one tire last week, I ended up in the before limping home on city streets on 3.5 tires.
On reflection, it is about as central as you get. Should have an empty part of the parking lot for us and has a cafe/buffet and the "Ale house". Could be a contender... http://www.railcity.com/din.php http://www.railcityalehouse.com/ Anybody been there recently? Anybody interested in checking it or the place that replaced Sulivan's out? |
Ale Hose! Sounds painful.
