And damn, I should have bought it this morning.

The site is horrifically slow at the moment.

cody 2008-03-03 10:17 AM

Yah, I'm trying to get the free download and although it starts at a nice 300 KBPS, it fails every time. :( I'll have to try again later.

Nick Koan 2008-03-03 10:19 AM

Yeah, I'm kinda screwed out of my $5

Not really though, I'm sure they'll make it right later, once everything dies down.

NIN released another album on the web. This time its completely free.

I have no idea what it sounds like, if its all instrumental like ghosts, or something else. I just started downloading it and will have to listen in the morning,

sperry 2008-05-05 09:25 AM

I was pretty disappointed by Ghosts... I never realized how much polish it takes to turn noise into an album. Ghosts is just too unfinished sounding to me.

Hopefully this is a little better...

Then again, I paid a whopping $10 for Ghosts, and this one's free, so as long as Trent comes around in a few years with something new, I'm not complaining if this new stuff is less awesome than the full albums. It's sorta like getting to listen in on his 5 year long development process for a new album.

...now, if only I'd get my email from nin.com to allow me to download The Slip.

Nick Koan 2008-05-05 09:31 AM

One thing I forgot to note...

The download link is to a torrent. Looks like there are 7-10 songs (didn't count exactly). I was about 1 hour away from finishing the Apple Lossless version this morning, but I did take a listen to a few tracks.

Some vocals. More in the vein of Year Zero than anything. Withholding judgment so far. Sounds decent, but nothing great.

It's a torrent? F that. I don't have torrent software. What does Trent think I am, some sort of net pirate?

Nick, lemme steal your copy.

Nick Koan 2008-05-05 09:36 AM

I don't know how I feel about sharing a free album...

we encourage you to

play it on your podcast,

etc.
Oh wait, nevermind. I'll bring it in on a thumbdrive when I get a chance.

sperry 2008-05-05 01:51 PM

The MP3 version of The Slip is a direct d/l of a .ZIP file. No torrent needed, so I grabbed it.

After a quick play through, I gotta say, it's like 10 times better than Ghosts. No masterpieces in there, but only two of the tracks I disliked, and tracks 7-9 are pretty damn cool. Sure it's missing the polish of the Fragile, and it's not quite as good as the last two albums, but it's good nonetheless.

cody 2008-05-06 02:21 PM

I requested the PDF for Ghosts and the new album yesterday and still haven't received the emails. I even added the domain, nin.com to my safe senders list. :(

Pretty "right-on" review of The Slip:

Very cool.

AtomicLabMonkey 2013-05-29 09:56 AM

...awesome.

And it's awesome

Nick Koan 2013-06-06 08:42 AM

In all honesty, when I first listened to it last night (on my ipad) I thought it was crap.

But giving it a proper listen on my headphones, I like it a lot more. Mix of newer song structure and older style synths.

It definitely sounds "new". As in, similar to the last few albums... deconstructed, synthy, very vocal, a little more pop/upbeat than the brutal/epic industrial sound from TDS/Fragile.

The Fragile is my favorite album, so I'm always hoping for the next epic double album... but like you said, this is more like Year Zero meets Pretty Hate Machine. Still decent, but it's just bookending the stuff I really like...

MattR 2013-06-06 09:51 PM

I'm going to need some time to warm up to this, but it's creative for sure.

Nick Koan 2013-08-05 07:32 PM

Since Trent is awesome, here is the whole NIN set from Lollapalooza.

cody 2013-08-05 07:46 PM

Haha, I saw that on FB too. I'm 29 minutes in already. Not bad.

van 2013-08-06 02:48 PM

I get to see NIN Saturday night. Who wants to touch me?

Well? How was it?

I picked up Hesitation Marks last night after Nick reminded me it was out yesterday. It's the best NIN album in a while I think. The middle few songs are a bit weak, but it starts really strong and ends pretty well. I think it's about as good as Pretty Hate Machine is, but still nothing has matched The Downward Spiral or The Fragile.

The album is very much a Pretty Hate Machine for the 21st Century... kinda synthy, poppy, and stripped down when compared to most NIN stuff. Nick commented to me that it somehow sounds "friendlier" or "happier" than other stuff. I think it's a result of more up-tempo beats and a general reduction in screaming. But seriously, there's a lot more vocal melody than normal, and EDM inspired beat tracks. I'm not sure I like the extra singing in particular, but after all the movie scores Trent's done lately, I get wanting to sing on his own albums again.

The iTunes version of the album I got has an interesting self-interview on the end where Trent plays some demos of the songs on the album and talks about the process of making them into the versions you hear on the final record. It's kinda interesting... can't say I've ever seen other artists willing to play their unfinished stuff, and it's even odder that it's Trent considering his notoriety for being a perfectionist that never wanted to release stuff that isn't "done". But he does talk a lot about how the point of this album was to change up the way he makes records from his previous works.

Either way, if you're a NIN fan, you'll probably like this okay... but we're still waiting for the next epic.

Nick Koan 2013-09-04 09:15 AM

Haha, the one single Everything is particularly poppy, but I've also heard it was more the exception than the rule. Maybe its just the vocal harmonies that put it over the top for me, but I'm still willing to give the rest of the album a shot.
