blue eyed mistress (jdm'ers only)

After having doing an all out widebody build i learned what i did not want to do on my new project. the change mostly was exterior and interior modifications. I wanted to build a car that was durable enough for our climates ever changing conditions and a interior that was comfortable enough to get in and out several times a day everyday. this mostly meant i was not going to be using fiberglass, cages, and seats that were built for a 12 year old asian girl. I wanted a car that was going to be unique/well performing in all aspects including drivability, braking, handling, acceleration, comfort ability and most importantly reliability. here is a picture of my last subaru and what i am trying to top this time around.

i picked up this 04 sti that was wrecked about 8 months ago. i got it for a killer deal of $3700 local. It was a deal i could not say no to even though it had no seats, cluster, wheels, headlights, and tails. it had a good amount of damage but nothing that could not be fixed. i was thinking about buying oem parts from subaru but after adding it all up it would have cost me nearly 2 grand with myself doing all the labor.

At this point i was not sure how i was going to go about the rebuild but i was starting to get some jdm thinking going on. while i decided how to sorce some special parts i worked on the teardown. I took out the motor and had all the timing components checked to be safe and also it gave me much more room to work on the engine bay.

I just could not stand the idea of having a stockish 04 sti. I wanted to do something unique. everyone around town seems to drive a stage 2 sti and just could not take it. I sourced a jdm v7 front clip. some of you might ask why i did not do a v8 and my answer is they are way harder to find and basically the same. v7 jdm sti used avcs so i have all the wiring for it with the front clip. i was going to keep the v8 front end but all the parts that i needed from the wreck came with the clip so i decided to go bugeye.

Finally!

Took some work but I got the chassis straight. I welded the the radiator support and light supports in before I painted the engine bay. I taped off everything and went for it in my garage.

Good to see a build thread floating around somewhere.

IheartSTI 2011-11-01 11:02 AM

after painting the engine bay i started fitting the front end body panels. i wanted to buy jdm hid headlights i just could not justify spending that kind of coin on them! i got some rota in 18x10 but was not happy with how wide they sat in the front without doing extensive front fender work. the rears fit fine as you can see.

picked up some different rotas to drive around while i figures out what i wanted to do with suspension brakes and wheels. at this point i kept v7 brembos, sti struts with tein springs, and 5x100 hubs.

The stock headlights look pretty good if you "Koji" mod them (paint the housing black, clear the orange blinker, etc.) Looks like you tried to roll the rear fender too much and it buckled?

Edit: For decent light output, I've liked the "GE 9007NH/BP2 Nighthawk Automotive Replacement Bulbs - Pack of 2" that I got from Amazon, but I have some "Philips 9007 VisionPlus Headlight Bulb, Pack of 2" (also from Amazon) waiting to go in that should be comparable.

I have since changed my headlights. you will see in post to come.

As far as the rear fenders they are not buckled just dented from hitting with a hammer. I used a fender roller on the inside and a hammer on the outside. there is no way not to dent it unless your the man which i am not lol. i cleaned it up and looks good now.

i finished doing all the body work which left me with paint and assembly. here are more pics of my progress.

Nice to see it's got the proper JDM side repeaters on the fenders.

Mind if I ask what the ballpark cost for paint was? My bugeye is in sore need of a repaint.

yes these were actual jdm fenders so i did not have to cut holes.

I will pm you about paint.

The timing cover on the engine was broke and it chipped material off the plastic cam gear so I decided to do new belt, water pump, pullies, and tensioners. I put the engine back into the car with stock motor and turbo.

I also picked up some rota grids for the nesting. I did not want to spend a lot of money on wheels until I switched to 5x114

here is car painted with some rota grids. only thing missing was jdm headlights and a few other small things to make it jdm legit. I have a ic water sprayer tank in the engine bay, jdm card holder, jdm light weight bumper beam. Still trying ti get my hands on a power steering cooler, jdm rear glass with wiper and motor.

I need smaller profile tires, front lip, side skirt extensions, and a rear diffuser! i really want to coat the wheels also but the company i got the wheels from are out of black super lap spoke stickers! the color i want the wheels to be wont jive with red spoke!

GusGus91 2011-11-10 04:37 PM

Hey sam, I need that BOV clamp and o-ring when you get a chance.

dude i still have in my glovebox. why are you always out of town!

IheartSTI 2011-12-02 06:52 AM

I decided that i wanted to do a brake, suspension, and wheel upgrade. My plans on staying stock failed miserably and i found out when i dont have anything to work on i get cranky. i went down to sierra sierra and tried to hustle some advans but the only set i wanted the boss man would not sell :( however i did end up finding better wheels and a good price. I picked up the volk te37 super laps.
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...I/50f447a9.jpg

i bought the wheels in 5x114 because i already had a BBK, suspension, and hubs for 5x114 sitting in the garage. I used endless Zeal 6 piston front brakes and JIC coilovers on all 4 corners. here is a picture of the brakes with my old te37. new ones are basically the same but weigh less and a different color

I love this car. Realy nice work you're doing. I've never seen a proper RHD Subaru around northern NV, save the postal legacies and what not.

Is the JDM shift bezel black from japanland or did someone anodize/paint it? just curious.

rory_a 2011-12-03 08:51 AM

^thats a good question... But I'm guessing it was done by the car's PO, no need to change out any of the center console during the RHD conversion, at least the others I've seen weren't swapped.

I've been wanting to do something with mine as it's got a scratch and it's shiny as shit when the sun hits it right.

Sam, are we even caught up yet? Still on the te37sl?
