Snow Donkey's 2

Ok I hate to do this but Dean was right about my Falken 3 season tires. I think the 3 seasons they were talking about is Late Spring, Summer, and Early Fall, because they suck in snow.

I need to get some winter tires dammit. This is only the 2nd time I have driven this car in the snow, and its a whole lot different than my honda. No Snow donkey's yet, but I had a near miss already.

Who will get the first one? :?:

DARKSTI 2005-12-18 11:01 AM

I almost got stuck also 2 times on the RE070s, i was fine once i was going, but starting on a incline sucks ass, thank god for the DCCD

M3n2c3 2005-12-18 11:03 AM

Sigh. It'll probably be me as I limp from Dayton to Carson on my re92s. This is my first winter with my RS.

Same here, ive driven my moms '95 Legacy Wagon for a few winters, but this is much different.

The only other car I'd ever driven in snow was my Eagle. . . FWD (traction control, thankfully), all-seasons, and it was about 500lbs heavier.

Hah, yeah. Those are definitely not passable in the snow.

But, I have to say, fart cans + backing up in the snow = fun!

So Saturday night I took the Sti out, no sign of bad weather...Sunday morning, wake up to snow..So I drove it from Carrie's house to mine on RE070's...bad idea, damn those tires suck in the snow

bruspeed 2005-12-18 02:51 PM

Last night I was leaving the bar, Decided to stab the throttle just to see how slick it was with my re92's, IT instantly shot t 6 grand, so I grabbed second and stayed in it, the speedo hit 65 before I got bored and let her coast to my usual 20 mph. Moral of teh story, Buy real winter tires. RE92s are scary

DARKSTI 2005-12-18 03:38 PM

Good moral, i just about go stuck again, i cant belive SOA puts those tires on t.he car

cody 2005-12-18 03:45 PM

Yah, my Proxes 4's seem no better than the RE92s. Accelerates well enough, but stopping on a decline+crappy Suby ABS=scary.

They are amazing tires in the summer, but they don't have a snow rating, which kinda blows. I wish salesmen (esp. in snowy areas like up here) would remind people that these tires are not meant for the snow.

People say that a lot. In reality the re92 isn't that bad of a tire. It's adequate in all conditions, but great in none... sounds just like you'd expect to get on a car from the factory.

Nick Koan 2005-12-18 04:00 PM

I've only driven one winter on real deal snow tires, and all in all, the RE92's ain't bad. I've certainly driven on worse.

Forgotten 2005-12-18 04:19 PM

I had a brief glimpse last night. I walked out of my room past my M3s in my living room out to my RE070 shod car. I was picking up someone from college terrace which is ~3 blocks away or so. It's doing fine all the way and it's even a bit hard to break traction. I stop at the final stop sign and pull away slowly to make sure i can stop. I hit the brakes at about 5mph and I start sliding and ABS kicks in. I let off and eased into the brakes, but only maintained speed that way. Anything harder I would lose traction. So I ended up sliding 300 feet or so onto Sierra. As we were leaving a snowball nailed my passenger side. What is wrong with some people?

The car on the street is there for scale.

M3n2c3 2005-12-18 08:50 PM

Ok, I'm gonna stop bad-mouthing the re92s now. They did fine going to work and coming back, and after getting back I drove up the long dead end street here and proceeded to tear it up for a little while to get a feel for the car's limits. They're not bad as long as you drive moderately. I was going out of my way to break traction and even when I did, it returned very quickly due to AWD. The only real issue I see is the fact that since the car is so light (at least relatively), it has a tendency to follow ruts in the snow rather easily.

MattR 2005-12-18 09:01 PM

Pete, nice effort there..

Ezdno 2005-12-18 10:14 PM

Good work! Pff, finals...

PS: I was outside detailing my car in shorts and a t-shirt yesterday

JonnydaJibba 2005-12-19 09:18 AM

This was the first time this season I was really able to get wicked in the snow, and it was awesome. Almost came close to a donkey encounter a couple times but I saved it, or got lucky.

Tim you suck.
I get NO traction in the Corolla, and the brakes don't work in the Probe, I was totally boned on Sunday.

If you read the car and driver "Max Performance" tire article, you see one of the things they talk about is how a tire recovers when it does lose traction. If I had to say something that the RE92s excel at, it is recovery. Unless you are flat out abusing them, they give you plenty of warning, and break away gradually, and when they do lose traction, they regain it quite easily. They do this pretty equally well in the dry, wet, and even snow. Nobody really gets a saving throw on ice, but they do OK...
