WTB: 5x100 wheels, size doesn't really matter

Well, today's attempt at snowing made me realize I'm going to need new tires soon, and I'd like to have a dedicated set of winter wheels. I'd prefer something aftermarket, black, and around 17" (that's what she said), but let me know what you have. Thanks!

100_Percent_Juice 2011-10-05 10:22 AM

I never appreciated the value of dedicated snows until I got a set. I will keep an eye out for you.

cody 2011-10-05 10:23 AM

I can't figure out why my summer setup (Rota Torques in 17X7.5 in gunmetallic with mostly spent summer tires) are vibrating. Hopefully it's just missing wheel weights. They look fine other than the superficial paint repairs I've done with Rota touchup paint and clearcoat. Sometimes on the freeway, my steering wheel vibrates a bit when I run them. They're on the car now and I'd like to run them until real snow is supposed to actually stick, but after that I might see if they can balance and then sell them for like $450 assuming they're fine.

A1337STI 2011-10-05 10:28 AM

Does the vibration change with speed? like no shaking at 60, really bad at 65 kind of deal?

does it start at a very low speed ? 30 ? does it get worse when you turn left or right?

I'd think wheel weights too.

also hows your tire wear? lots more on the outside edge than inside?

khail19 2011-10-05 10:35 AM

I have OEM Forester XT wheels if you are interested in those. They are 16" though. I'll paint them black if you want.

$150, they have BFG snow tires on them now, probably one winter left on them.

I've got a set of Outback turbo wagon wheels. 17"x7"+48 IIRC. They're machined silver, not black. But they're in great condition, kinda rare, and would paint up really nice if you really want black wheels. And since they've got beefy spokes, they won't get lots of snow packed in them easily.

The wheels are currently off my car and have no tires. I'm figuring $200 for the set?

I think it's at almost every speed, but it's more "fast" and dramatic at faster speeds. Even at it's worst at 80MPH, it's no biggie to me though. This doesn't happen with my 17X8's with Starspecs. Those run butter smooth.

Damn, now that's a sweet deal!

I already have 2 other sets of wheels for the XT, so I can let these go cheap.

A1337STI 2011-10-05 12:52 PM

if it goes away when you swap wheels. you either managed to lose a weight, Or you wore off tread unevenly and that affected the balance (heard of that, never really seen it proved to be the case for anyone)

Maybe i should get in line for the Forrester rims ... oh wait i have a big pile of debt.. never mind. :( hehehe

If Rob passes. Let me know, I have someone that is looking for some dedicated winters.

What size tires fit these wheels? I kinda guessed at 215/60/16, and tire rack doesn't have the tires I want in that size... If I'm wrong, and they'll fit the tires I want (conti extreme contacts, for anyone curious) I'll take 'em. If not, move on to kev I guess.

Cody- I'd really like yours; if khail's don't work out, I'll figure something out with you.

Scott- I've never really liked the looks of those wheels, and since I'm a child, aesthetics is beating out function for this decision  thanks for the offer tho.

khail19 2011-10-05 02:13 PM

The tires on there now are 215/60/16, but you can put whatever 16" tire on them that you want. The wheels are the same size and width as the stock 02-05 WRX wheel.

You can always get them powder coated black buy the new Fine Line Powder Coating and report back to us as to the quality.

I actually misspoke. The vibration only starts at 65mph and gets worse as I approach 80. The fact that it gets so much worse at higher speeds but they run smooth at lower speeds tells me wheel weights too. The tires would have another Summer on them except that the inside edge of the tread is bald due to the neg. camber I run. Usually this doesn't happen as much because I run zero toe, but I didn't check the pressure on them all Summer and I just did and it was 32PSI all around. I pumped it back up to 40PSI so hopefully I have moved the contact patch closer to the center of the tread.

Wearing out the insides faster than the rest can actually throw them out of balance. or so i've been told by people who balance tires ... (or outsides faster than inside) ... :?: but tossing a weight is a sure way to get vibrations. Jeana's car is getting some vibrations now and her tires are way worn out, and a bit unevenly ... it might be something else...

If Jake doesn't buy them, i'll probably get them flipped and see if I can get another Summer out of 'em.

bigrobwoot 2011-10-06 05:57 PM

I just told khail I want his wheels via PM, for anyone that cares. Cody, do you have an idea of when you're gonna take your wheels off? I might want those, too... Can anyone tell I finally got a job?

WRX06TR 2011-10-06 06:34 PM

Great news Rob! And thanks...you made me feel a lot better about still being in school :P

cody 2011-10-06 08:13 PM

I'll probably have them on for another 2-8 weeks depending on weather. I'm kinda waffling on wanting to sell them now though. Let me think about it. I think I'll get the tires flipped and rebalanced next week regardless.

khail19 2011-10-06 08:15 PM

Congrats man! Having a job is a good thing.

bigrobwoot 2011-10-06 10:21 PM

Thanks khail! And thanks nick! You'll get there buddy, only took me 5 1/2 years ;)

100_Percent_Juice 2011-10-06 11:30 PM

I never gave up on you. Despite what everyone else was saying.

cody 2011-10-11 02:52 PM

Got the tires flipped and balanced today. One of the Rota's is bent. :( It's not that bad, but I'll look to get it replaced unless somebody wants to buy them as is.

sedonabugeye 2011-10-11 06:22 PM

how much now that one is bent?
