Top Gear USA

So, I just watched the first two episodes and am quite underwhelmed.

I have no choice but to compare it to the BBC show and it, well, sucks in comparison. The writing is awful and the hosts except maybe Tanner have no charisma at all. I have always thought Rutledge was a Dufus on NASCAR shows and even more so when associated with sports cars. I don't even know or care who the 3rd guy is. Anybody that can't do a burnout has no reason to live. And why didn't the Stig drive the Evo?

The whole show is like the worst episode of Top Gear meets Larry the Cable Guy. I just think they tried to be too much like the BBC show and failed.

MattR 2010-12-08 07:22 PM

Yeah, I'm trying to like it, I like Tanner and I can handle Rutledge, but that Adam guy is a total drip, I can't stand watching or hearing him...It's like 62% effort compared to the UK version. Plus, JK is so much more enjoyable as a prime host, I can't not compare them.
I'm not giving up yet, but its not going well.

sperry 2010-12-08 11:50 PM

Keep in mind that the UK show has decades of practice to develop the hosts' chemistry.

My guess is they'll have to go through a few revisions of hosts and show format before they catch on to something really entertaining. Also, they're going to really have to stretch to come up with some cool ideas the original show hasn't already done, and they surely don't have the sort of budget to do stuff like drive to the north pole quite yet.

So yeah, it's going to be underwhelming.

Is there anywhere I can watch these online? I have yet to see them.

y'all are making me think the space taken up on the dvr by a few unwatched episodes is a waste :(

tryin to make it through a continually growing collection of BBC Top Gear before crossing the pond.

My suggestion is to not waste your time Austin. That show's terrible. TERRIBLE.

90% of the entertainment contained in the BBC Top Gear is the heavy use of strange accents and foreign deadpan comedic terminology. The closest analogue to a Top Gear USA in my mind would be Hannah Montana, but with more Billy Ray.

+1, even with several years/seasons under their belt, It will never be like the UK show.

I liked the first episode, but I watched it after the 2nd one which was pretty bad, so maybe it just seemed better in comparison. It's nowhere near as good as the original, but not so bad I won't watch it. I guess it falls in line with a guilty pleasure. But if the 3rd episode is worse than the 2nd, I'm going to see a bad pattern developing.

sperry 2010-12-15 11:56 AM

I swear. You guys must not remember the original Top Gear at all.

I dare you to make it through the whole clip.

WRX06TR 2010-12-15 12:54 PM

I like the new show...but I'm just glad there is more car stuff on TV

AkRSguy 2010-12-17 10:55 AM

the only excuse I have for watching the new Top Gear is I can never find anything else on when it starts then it makes my brain stroke out for how bad it is and I just sit there and stare till the mind melt is over........to put it nicely!

OK, that was awful. It was from 20 years ago though.

Exactly my point. In 20 years, Top Gear USA could be awesome!

By the way, Season 2 of Top Gear US was much better than the first year, they must have imported some of the writers or something, because it did improve a lot.

sybir 2011-09-19 09:38 PM

They got away from trying to make it a clone, and it got a lot more entertaining. Rut is my peoples, though (fat, jolly car geeks and wagon whores) so I'm biased.

Dean 2011-09-19 09:40 PM

It is a lot better now.
