Damn, tracer fire means either 7.62 or .50 cal rounds. Ouch.

I'm sure that guy never felt a thing. It looks like he got hit with some bouncing rounds, which stunned him, but before he had time to feel any pain, a .50 went through his head, turning him into dead weight.

I can only guess his situational awareness was non-existant. He was just kneeling in the middle of a street. He probably didn't even know there was a machine gun off to his left.

Owned for sure.

Kevin M 2004-07-15 12:40 PM

Judgiing by the relative intactness of his head, I assure you it wasn't a .50 cal round that finished him off.

Are there really .308 (7.62 NATO) tracer rounds? I thought that round was basically only for small-arms rifles, and I wouldn't expect anything less than a full machine gun to use tracers? So we employ machine guns with something smaller than .50?

Ooh.. I just read: the 5.56 SAW has optional tracer ammo... I wonder if that was what got him. That fires essentially the same round the M16 uses.

Kevin M 2004-07-15 01:15 PM

We still use M60s and a few other things with 7.62. Not as common as 5.56 of course, and yeah, there are tracers for those, but most grunts don't like them. Tracers point both ways. Also, tracers are designed to help you 'walk' automatic fire onto a target. Since NATO soldiers are 'discouraged' from using full automatic fire when actually trying to kill the enemy rather than suppress his movement, tracers are a moot point.
