Hey, welcome to the board.

I don't know anything about the OBX exhaust, but $1500 for and up and down pipe seems excessive. I've got a complete Vishnu setup (up-pipe, and turbo-back) and it was only $1200, and Vishnu tends to be one of the more over-priced setups.

What car is this for? I'm assuming an 02-03 WRX. If it's newer than an '03, you don't need an up-pipe since the factory one doesn't have a cat in it any longer.

BTW: The all-caps is unnecessary... it's the visual equivalent of shoutting in a quiet room.

Is this the downpipe that has the dump valve on it?

JC 2004-07-14 09:59 PM

You sure it's OBX? OBX is pretty much a cheap ass brand. I would stay away.

Reminds me of this link, dunno if it's genuine OBX or not though.

Bwhhahaa... that's hilarious. That guy better not give out the address to his shop, or he's gonna end up with his own busted-ass manifolds thrown through the window of his office every morning.

WREKLESSWRX 2004-07-15 07:45 AM

AtomicLabMonkey 2004-07-15 07:51 AM

Wow... that Civic manifold made a lot of the crap in the Mustang aftermarket look like Formula-1 parts.

Many people (me included) believe that an upgraded header is pretty useless on a WRX. Basically the only thing you'll gain w/ a header is lower weight. The stock header already flows plenty for the stock turbo (and almost every aftermarket turbo). Unless you're planning on building a 500whp drag car, you probably don't want headers, and if you are building a 500whp drag car, then you're going to need a completely custom exhaust anyway.

For $1500 you should be able to go with just about any exhaust, aside from a complete Titanium TBE. Like I said before I'm running the Vishnu standard exhaust (as opposed to their "signature" exhaust that has a divorced wastegate tube). It's nice, and sounds good an mellow with a bit of grunt when you get on it, however I think you can probably do as good or better for cheaper.

Lots of people seem to like the Helix down-pipe, and I love the sound of Tyson's cat-back (Megan Racing I believe). And there are a ton of good up-pipe manufactureres out there... just make sure you get one with a flex-joint, or you may have leak issues. 'Course if you're willing to spend $1500, you could always do say an up-pipe, down-pipe, and some crazy JDM cat-back, like HKS or GReddy... they're not "better" than the others, but they carry clout w/ the name (if that's important to you... I'm all about fast for cheap and stay away from the JDM markup). At least those JDM cat-backs have the option for Carbon Fibre and Titanium, which can look cool.

And then there's the John Evan's special... an unpolished stainless-steel 2.5" straight pipe... louder than god, cheap as hell, and ugly as sin... but it certainly gets the job done, come see MattR's STi at the next meet.

BTW: The Vishnu that I've got and the MRT are nearly identicle units.

I really like the divorced waste gate pipe on my BPM... The Bellmouths are OK, but I think keeping the wastegate dump removed from the turbo exit for as long as reasonable is desireable.

Just don't get a BPM unless you really like a brash, loud, and insane sounding exhaust.

You'll be hard pressed to get me to believe that the BPM is significantly better performance-wise than any other 3" exhaust w/ a single cat. I'll take the 1hp loss to have a real straight through muffler and a resinator, instead of whatever that three-pipe thingy is on that exhaust!

The true JDM(read a little more expensive) crap like CUSCO is a different designed downpipe, that will only mtach up with certain JDM catbacks.

But he regular made in Japan stuff like Greddy and HKS(if those are even made in Japan) match up with most aftermarket downpipes.
