spoiler question

my buddy has a merkur XR4TI and he was wondering what spoiler would work the most efectively. it is a rear wheel drive car with a ton of pony's. needs some dowforce. he was looking at the carbon fiber C-WEST spoiler. let me know! :D

Dean 2004-08-13 07:27 AM

If he wants real downforce, he should go with something the real racers are running.

Gary was running a SPI Motorsports GT Rear Wing

Assuming it is an American car of some form, he may want to go with an actual spoiler that comes off the trailing edge of the trunk lid (a la NASCAR) instead of a wing.

AtomicLabMonkey might have some good ideas on how to keep the rear end of some American Iron on the ground.

The XR4Ti is one of my favorite cars...Those things used to Dominate SCCA Trans AM back in the late 80's early 90's

AtomicLabMonkey 2004-08-13 07:38 AM

Spoilers & wings can work on any type of car and each have their advantages and disadvantages.

I thought those XR4TI's already had *two* spoilers on 'em from the factory... I guess you could call it the turbo STrIce version of the Escort.

That's about as much an XR4TI as this is a Taurus:

That sounds like a pretty badass car! Very unique, at least here in the States.

Que? Cosworth is a tuning company that tunes Fords in England/Europe, much like Steeda or Saleen here in the US. I don't believe there was ever a "Ford Cosworth". That's like saying I've got a "Ford SVT", or a "Honda Mugen".

As far as street car stuff, they primarily do motor work on Ford 4-bangers, like the Fiesta, Escort, Focus, and in the past, the Ford Sierra (aka the XR4TI here in the US IIRC).

Cosworth's racing program produced some awesome F1 motors back in the day as well.

Ford now owns Cosworth, and uses them as their motor development program for European racing. They're also Ford's European equivalent to the SVT group here in the States.

Cosworth has tuned some sick ass Fords over the years:

It's a real shame we don't get these cars here in America. :(

Tell me about it. I want one of the Falcon GTs that Ford makes in Australia... that thing is awesome.

388hp with a well designed/tuned suspension, great brakes & 4 doors to boot? Yes please - I'll take that over just about anything else as my daily driver.

Hmm... subtract 88hp and add AWD and you've got an STi....

I wish Fords in the states looked and performed like that. falcons are hot...they're from the streets

sperry 2004-08-13 01:53 PM
