98 legacy outback ...REFLASH??

hey I just got a 98 Legacy Outback with a NEW engine ...Probably will have a hard time competing with my chipped Audi but How can I chip or Reflash it to boost HP and MPG???

JC 2004-11-14 10:57 PM

You can't. Did you put a new stock engine from the same year in it? One of the guys on the board has a built N/A Outback.

kindjoe 2004-11-14 11:18 PM

it was a dealer warranty ...the engine blew right after i bought it...so yes its totally stock ...
no after market engine ecu mods at all....anywhere???

LetItRev 2004-11-14 11:20 PM

98's have a rich history of head gasket issues, leading to blown engines. I don't know if I would want to mod this year's engine at all. Mine made it to about 92,000 miles before it too developed head gasket problems. (98 Outback) I dumped it and bought a WRX! :)

You could probably piggy back it. They might make a chip, but it's not worth it IMHO. Why do you want to?

LetItRev 2004-11-14 11:22 PM

What color is this car? Also, would you be interested in some OEM allow wheels with studded Nokian Hakkapallatta snow tires?

kindjoe 2004-11-14 11:24 PM

well i would want to for the joy of it and i got a great deal on the car with some $$$ left over in my budget....

the car is dark red with the std outback trim ....it is the 2.5L model

LetItRev 2004-11-14 11:26 PM

Wow...I was thinking that you perhaps bought my old car! LOL!!!

I have snow tires for that vehicle if you would like to check them out.

Let me know.

kindjoe 2004-11-14 11:27 PM

ohh it came with some great all season bridgestones ...but i have had excellent traction with Nokian Haks on my Audi

kindjoe 2004-11-14 11:28 PM

actually i did buy it in Reno ....

I will keep the snow tires in mind if these all seasons end up...to be less than i need

Well if you have money there is always somewhere to spend it, ECU just isn't the right spot on a stock car.

kindjoe 2004-11-14 11:34 PM

so after new shocks ...and cross drilled rotors ...would it be worthy???

JC 2004-11-14 11:39 PM

Well first don't buy cross-drilled rotors. Exhaust and intake will give better gains than a chip, AFAIK you can use an SAFC on your car to compensate fuel wise.

Here are some good products to think about:

I'm pretty sure there is a piggyback chip out there for the 2.5RS/Legacy. It'll give you 10hp and load less reliability IIRC.

Honestly, though, I'd rather do Cobb intake, headers, exhaust then the piggyback chip.

Kevin M 2004-11-15 10:20 AM

ECU mods are unnecessary on NA Subarus, but bolt-ons give decent gains on EJ25s, enough to make a noticable difference. Headers and exhaust (skip the intake on your car) will make it feel torquier and give it some top end too.

No, if you adjust the fuel after you will see good gains.

Thanks gentlemen ....

I think that will give me something to chew on for a while ....

Ill post whatever happens!!! meanwhile ill be learning subaru snow behavior...
