Performance shops?

Does anyone know of a performance muffler shop in town that does mandrel bend pipes? (I'm taking the plunge and replacing the catback exhaust.)

You might want to consider a pre-fab cat-back? I can't imagine they're much more expensive than having a custom pipe made.

I'd link to some recomended cat-backs but NASIOC's search is busted...

Yeah, I tried NASIOC too, I've had problems lately with searches.

I'm first looking at options that I can use a glass pack muffler with. If I don't turn up a local shop, then I may consider the pre-fab options. I've just got to get it done before Hawthorne!

Well, if you have the money and don't mind a super loud sound, I think the GReddy cat-back is a straight thru glass-pack muffler...

I have NO idea if they do performance work, but my wife took her Explorer to Landa at 4th & Wells. She was getting a catalytic CEL. They ended up telling her that they didn't think it was the catalytic, but a sensor. They recommended another shop to check the sensors and didn't charge her anything (and I know they spent some time on it). Bottom line is that they impressed us with their integrity. I think most shops would have just put in the new catalytic. Maybe worth a phone call at least.

Good luck!

Thanks! As my first choice I was actually thinking about the configuration this Matt Randolph guy posted here:

I'm not sure what the total weight is on this setup, and I was thinking about substituting the Dynomax 2.5 muffler, $30-something at Summit.

But, maybe also you get what you pay for.

Thanks! I'm going to call them today.

too bad APS raised their price on the high flow discharge downpipe thing or his system would be way cheaper, i think it went up like almost 100.00 dollars. You'd be rockin the house with a turboback, but does'nt that put you out of STOCK?!?!

dknv 2003-05-07 08:58 PM

No luck with Landa , he said he's not aware of anyone in NNV who does mandrel bend pipes, and that I'd probably need to find a shop in S. CA. (Well that's just not going to work - I'm going to need to look for an alternative.)

I can do catback exhaust & stay in stock. That's what John & Patty have done with their yellow WRX (but not mandel bend which is supposed to be a cleaner flowing setup).

try Mr Z's muffler and exhaust in Sparks, I used to know a guy there, but he left before I could get any work done.

I think they do mandrel bent work.

Yeah, mandrel bent pipes are bent so the inside dimention of the pipe doesn't change, whereas the alternative is just to bend the pipe, which pinches it at the bend. You need a big ol' machine to do mandrel bends... or one of these:

Last time I checked (about a year ago), no one in town had the machine to do mandrel bent pipe. Sacramento was the closest place to get it done. If you go with regular crush bend, you might give LT Muffler a try. They are near Costco on Grove. Tell them I sent you and they might hook you up. They buy most of their parts from me at NAPA. Skip and Mark are both cool guys.

Thanks Khail!
Your information is still current, there seems to be no one in town doing mandrel bent. I talked to Mr. Z's and Sparks Muffler (who also does perf. exhaust), Mr Z's said the closest place was in Sacramento, not a muffler shop but some pipe place.
:(

I thought john and patty had an axle back setup, not cat back? Sure seems like a lot of hassle to find a mandrel bend shop, look like ordering a pre-fab cat back is the best choice.

Let me know what you can find and I can see if I can get a better price for you.
