Should I rock a cutout? I can get tuned for it open and closed ala Protune.

cody 2005-08-07 10:04 AM

Sorry, that was my bad for grave digging. I should have started a new thread.

Bansuvs, I think I would see about 10-20 whp by adding it and getting tuned for it. I'm pretty sure I won't incur any additional cost for getting tuned for it as my appointment is with Equilibrium Tuning next weekend and he (like most tuners) doesn't usually charge for additional maps with a simple setup like mine.

But I think I'm going to stick with the KISS rule and keep it simple. Maybe when I upgrade the turbo someday, I'll try it.

Thanks,
Cody

I'd worry more about driving your car at 100+ mph on the street getting it tuned more than whether or not the the local cops are going to bust you for a bypass. Skip the extra map, and reduce your chances of throwing your car away in a Davis field or getting arrested.

But how do you really feel?

I really don't mean to be a dick or anything.

It's just that you've got a guy that's doing repeated 3 and 4th gear pulls down a public street. One of these days, he's either gonna crash a car, or get busted... it's not an "if", it's a "when". Is it really worth the savings over going to a shop to take that risk? For me, it's not even close; if the car's wrecked, it's gone. If you're busted by the cops, at 100+, it's jail time. How fast is a wrecked or impounded car? ...especially if the driver's in jail/hospital/morgue.

Your concerns are valid. I live on the edge, what can I say?

 Yes, I give that accident a 9.5.

Now, you do realize that he crashed his car because he was driving like an idiot, right? There is no way that wreck was caused by the air in his tires, and you can't roll a car 3 time end-over-end entering a corner at 50 mph. A lack of skidmarks tells me he just drove into the corner way too fast and crashed. Driver error, in the corner pocket.

Yah, you may be right. That's why I never lend my car to anyone ever. I see what you're getting at, but the fact remains, I've spoken with two people who have been along for road tuning sessions with him and they had nothing but good things to say. I'm honestly not too worried about this same thing happening to my car. Call me stupid...

Well then, we wish you the best of luck. Seriously. I don't want to hear a story about your car being next. Not enough sonic yellow wagons in the world anymore.

That wasn't exactly intended to imply "Ed's gonna wreck your car". It's just a great example of what can happen when you drive way too fast on a public street.

Although the irony that the guy that wrecked is also the guy that you want to road tune your car is unscriptable.

sperry 2005-08-11 02:05 PM

I split the topic into its own thread to let the old one RIP.

cody 2005-08-11 02:30 PM

Thanks Sperry, and I was serious when I said thanks for showing that to me. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Not to be a jerk, but IMO, going to that guy is stupid. Dont forget that while you're illegally driving your vehicle on a public street (and not even 65 in a 60 illegal, 100+ illegal), you'll be adding some pretty serious wear and tear in addition to likely a lot of miles and a tank of gas on top of the "tune" price.

The guy with the Legacy put over 200 miles on his car while him and Ed were "tuning" the car. I'd rather someone put my car up on a dyno, controlled environment, no bumps to bang in to at 100+ and not have to worry about all the bullshit that goes along with road tuning.

Kevin M 2005-08-11 03:00 PM

Yeah... when your car is impounded and sold at auction, you don't get a check from your insurance company...
