2nd gear

I am noticing unusual noise in 2nd gear especially when decelerating (letting the engine be the brake). This does not occur in any other gear, and is like a whining noise. I can't remember if my first wrx did this or not. This is my first non-automatic car, my first awd car, and my first turbo car (the 1st wrx doesnt count since i only got to put 4000 miles on it). There doesnt seem to be any issue getting in and out of second it just makes a noise that none of the other gears make. Should I bring this into Lithia and be without my car or is this normal?

Lithia will probably tell you its normal... and frankly it may be. WRXs tend to combat clutch shudder... I know my '02 ended up getting a redesigned clutch at about 14k miles since it was so noisey, and a known problem.

You're best bet is to let someone more familiar with the car ride in it and listen before taking it in. And if you take it somewhere, bring it to Michael Hohl.

My WRX did the same thing. At first it was only first gear. Then after a while first and second, by the time I got rid of it with 35K miles first second and third were making a noise under deceleration.

I took mine to lithia and they told me it was normal, which I didn't believe otherwise it would have always been like that. I would say take it in to them and see what they say.

Need a co-pilot

Who wants to take a ride and give me an opinion?
Can I get a co-pilot... LoL

Lithia replaced my center diff under warranty due to a similar noise to what you are describing. You might check that out just in case.

My car doesn't seem to do it much, but apparently Suby's are known for deceleration noise. I've heard people claim it's valve lash. If it's only in 2nd, could be a bad sign, but maybe not.

Mine did that also and eventually sounded worse while accelerating. and KABOOM!
