You're right...your roommate (mom) is wrong.

I think it's more pear-in than pair-in. But I'd rather squeeze a pair than a pear.

For 20+ years we have been using the pronunciation of enkei as INKEE

Tein just seems to be it should be said like TEE in, if it was in german it would be TINE.

I dunno about Enkei or Tein for sure, but Kumho should be "goom ho," and Hankook should be "hahn-gook." :P
