why drive by wire?
Why are so many cars using drive by wire throttle body/gas pedal setups? I searched a little and the only reason I could find was giving the computer control over the car to improve gas mileage. Aren't the computers fast enough to modify the fuel and timing setups based upon the throttle plate opening and closing? Granted, I'm not a mechanic or automotive engineer but it seems like a lot of extra production cost that would yield small gains. Anyone care to enlighten my dumbass?

No issues with throttle cables getting gunked up with hot apple pie and causing sporadic acceleration?
Personally, I'm okay with it. I'll start to complain when brake-by-wire comes out. |
How about the lower cost of cruise control.
Instead of: CC ECU, an extra throttle linkage, actuator motor, and all the associated wiring to run a switch from the wheel to the rest of the system. You have: A few buttons wired to the ECU. |
Cruise control, emissions, and to a lesser extent traction control.

Got it....Hot apple pie gunk....
thanks guys |
If I may chime in, I HATE drive by wire! From the tech's standpoint, it's just more of a SOB to work with than a mechanical cable.
More stuff to "go wrong" with the fly by wire system. |

Throttle-by-wire also gives you the ability to have different throttle maps and/or pedal accelleration functions (like mouse accelleration) On my previous MB very quick throttle input would give you more aggressive throttle plate opening. (ex. quickly going from 5% to 60% may open the throttle plate to 100%) It would also adapt to your driving style, at least it would try. On the BMW cars with SMG transmissions the throttle-by-wire is needed during shifts. The best part of this is the throttle blipping to rev match when downshifting. These cars also have a two position throttle curve button. |
I had a guy who decided to IDLE his Murano down here from Truckee because the potentiometer in the gas pedal assembly took a shit. Maybe Nissan just didn't get it right at first, but there's been SO many issues with that crap!
And I hate it when you're trying to listen for an internal engine noise, but you can't rev the motor up while you're under the hood! NO THROTTLE! I think that alone pisses me off the most... Cables work just fine. |
