Bumper cam

A co-worker and I came up with a neat idea for a bumper cam. . .

I was screwing around with an XBox Live camera on my notebook today. The cord on the cam is super long, and the quality is suprisingly high.

The idea is to have the cam attached to the inside of an empty foglight bezel (one with the hole for the light) and run the cord through the engine bay, into the cabin, and to my notebook sitting on the passenger side floor.

Any thoughts? I figured this would be fun for autox as the cam will be mounted to the side I usually hit cones with. Talk about getting up close and personal

Should be sweet, you just have to make sure that laptop is secured in the car with a strap or something.

Most any USB cam will do what you describe.

You may well need a 7200 RPM drive to handle higher resolution at higher frame rates. A CF might even be better to write to especially if you can spin down the HD to protect it.

I want a lipstick camera I can put in or on my helmet that follows my head movements. Would be nice if it tracked eye movement, but not even sure that is doable for anything short of big $$$s.

when I auto-x'd in Wisconsin, one of my buddies did that on his sti, he removed the fog light cover put teh camera in and in front of it he put a piece of lexan to protect it. However he had the bullet cam that hooked directly into his camcorder which was in the glovebox. He also had the controls on a switch placed on his e-brake handle so he didnt have to get into the glovebox to hit record.

A buddy of mine here at work has a lipstick cam setup, with 6 cameras and a nice small digital recorder. He's super excited to wire it up to my car at auto-x this year!

Who makes the setup he has? That'd be cool to have.

No idea man. I've seen some of the videos he's made, wiring it up to his own car and such, and the quality looks pretty good! I don't know who makes it tho. I'll ask him if I remember!

I too want to get multiple cameras set up in my STi for Hockenheim and Nurburg this summer. I just started looking in to it yesterday though. What I'd like to do is get two bullet cameras hooked up to one recording device that somehow splits them so I can make a video with the views switching or have picture-in-picture. I'm going to start posting on the Chase Cam forums and figure out how to do it.

In the security world back before digital special VCRs would record a frame from each camera one after the other. During playback it would route the video to the correct output or would multiplex it onto one output. There are security type DVRs that will do what you want but they are really intended for rack mount. You might just have to record it all seperately and sync it up later.

Anyway let me know what you find out. 3 or 4 cameras would be trick..... for my commute.

This reminds me to ask the dude I work with what kind of setup he has... Dammit I'm forgetful! I'll check with him when he gets back from work.

Here ya go! Not cheap, but the product looks pretty good from the vids he's made!
