Need coating advice!

Anyone have better than average experience with certain shops? I'm looking to have my header coated while I'm waiting for my AP.

I don't think anybody local has the equipment to do the high temp coatings you are probably looking for.

Stock or after market?

I think the consensus is it is a good idea for the thinner tubing based after market ones, but the stock cast ones really don't need it. Now an extrude hone and port match on the stockers may be a good choice if you really have spare money lying around.

Doing anything with the headers is usually one of the last mods before you start spending money on engine internals etc... as they have a very low HP/$ ratio.

Typical power mods from the engine back is more or less:

Access Port
Turbo Back exhaust
Up-pipe
Turbo
Headers
Engine/head work

Crucial Racing will send you coated stock headers in exchange for your cores+$ (not sure of the price). The coating process they use is the best and they come with an EGT bung already drilled. That way you don't have downtime waiting to get them coated.

I just heat wrapped mine when I was tapping for an EGT and installing an UP. Fun day. :)

hmm. are you looking for like an HPC coating? i think full race does coating jobs.. but are $$$!

WTF?

OK, so I installed the header up-pipe combo from Meagan today. (on 07 wrx) What can I say, patience is not a virtue of mine:D I can always yank it for coating when I have better money. At least I'm honest!:D Anyways, I'm kinda stumped. The throttle response is night and day and there is definately a bit more pep. It feels like I'm driving a big cam'ed V8 though! It shakes and idles at like 500rpm now and feels like it's gonna die when I am trying to stop. (it doesn't really die) No CEL, nothing to indicate anything wrong. So why all the shakes? Is this just a werks with a header? Just deal with it? Also, when did the up-pipe start coming cat-less, stock from Subaru!? You can shine a flashlight and look right through mine.

Welcome to making power/intake/exhaust/engine mods without tuning.

wrxkidid 2007-08-18 09:47 PM

06+ has a catless uppipe.

chrscott_01 2007-08-19 01:39 PM

Ok fine!

It runs fine now! No more shakes, still no CEL. Weird! Anyone know why it would do that then stop and run fine? Is this just the ecu playing catch up or something?

I changed my intake from stock to a short ram, and then back with out tuning.

Then i went to a custom Cat back with out tuning. each time it seemed to hurt the gas millage a tiny bit and made the engine search for the proper idle speed. after 2K miles from my custom cat back my gas millage is the best i've ever had. (25 mpg) and i drive up spooner or up 431 5 times a week.

Sooooo maybe, yes its changing mods with out tuning. eventually the stock ECU parameters will do the best they can, but its not where you want to be with out stock parts.

I would recommend you get a Cobb AP + a tune . try to schedule a tune with Ed from EQ tuning during a Reno Fernley Raceway test & Tune day. :) (you can get on a test and tune day as low as $75 !!!)

Damn I want to get in on that. I know imprezif does too. When are these scheduled for?

Looks like its currently at 175 for a full day, 110 for a half day. I think it was early summer they had the really cheap rates, Maybe just call them up and ask when their cheapest days are for the test and tune. ?

also check with Ed. not sure if a half day would be enough or not. i would think that it would be but i'm no tuner.

I was out there to setup a drift event with skid pad from pro control (event got canceled due to scheduling issues (gp moto race)) But they are really really nice out there and would probably help you out

you may need a track permit, track experience , or some sorta auto racing experience, uhm again, call em up :)
