Noise in 3rd gear after clutch install.

Just installed the exedy stage 1 organic and lightweight flywheel. Everything seems totally normal except, when I am in 3rd gear and I let off the gas pedal. I hear a noise similar to the sound of skateboard wheels on asphalt. Its not a constant sound but its always the same each time it happens and it only happens in 3rd when I take my foot off the gas. It is most noticeable from 3500rpm and down. Any ideas? I have had shockproof lightweight trans fluid in there for about 6k miles and its on the full mark. Again, this sound was not present before this new clutch.

Did you replace the throw-out bearing during the install?

It has been dubbed "Subaru Deceleration Noise" since at least 1998. It is nothing new.

Adding a stiff transmission mount will cause you to be able to hear it on a totally stock car. Even without that, many stock cars do it. If you take it to Subaru for warranty, they give you an even heavier flywheel. Going to a light flywheel makes it very, very noticeable. It is not a bad thing. It's not hurting anything. Your flywheel didn't cause it, it only caused you to be able to hear it. Your car has always done it and always will.

Running a higher front/rear tire pressure differential will make the noise get quieter or even go mostly away. You might try a stagger of 5 psi... as in fronts at 36 psi, rears at 31 psi.

I had my clutch replaced under warranty back in '01 for that issue... I was under the impression that newer cars don't have that issue. Then again aftermarket clutches are plain noisy, but I would expect to hear that in every gear, not just 3rd.

The sound does happen at random times in the other gears when i do hear it. I guess since I have the cusco engine/tranny mounts and now this lightweight gruppe flywheel its just another sound that I need to get use to. Or just listen to more music. Thanks for the info.

scott- The throw-out bearing was replaced as well.

I dunno why, but in the RS community, there just seems to be something about 3rd that makes it most noticable. I simply *assumed* that other subi trannies with the same noise, would likely make it in the same gear. Mine is audible in 4th, but most prominent in 3rd. Possibly just the right amount of coast side force on the gear, or the setup of the shafts in the trans. case simply sending more of the sound through the case in 3rd... Never heard anything about newer cars not doing it with a LW flywheel.

I do know that I NEVER heard it before swapping the flywheel out for the Exedy 12.xx lbs unit. As soon as I heard it, I went frantically searching on rs25.com looking so see if I was the only one, or if I managed to f* up my transmission doing the install!

not to hijack or anything but have you guys heard my EVO deceleration noise omg.

diff.transfercase.clutch so loud.

MPREZIV 2007-10-30 06:36 PM

I can only imagine... I'm sure it's up there with "cement mixer"...

M3n2c3 2007-10-31 10:04 PM

I get a bit of noise. Since all of the bits in question are still stock on my car, it's not really noticeable unless you listen for it, and the exhaust mostly covers it up now.

I had that issue a couple years time back, i was told it was normal and went to playing my music a notch louder to cover it up if need be.

I did it with a few members at Robbers house. We fumbled around for a few hours, then Cory came and poked fun at us, did some magic, rambled on about some oldass booberry cereal, and then exposed us all to second hand smoke. All in all it was a good day until I got in to drive away only to discover that the release fork was not where it was suppose to be and the clutch stuck to the floor. Still with all the complications it only took 12hrs which to me, is pretty decent. I know that next time will be like half that because there will be no ass scratching.

dayofpain 2007-11-01 03:05 PM

hmmm, interesting.

i been thinking about doing clutch and flywheel but have been scared to do the install myself.

100_Percent_Juice 2007-11-01 03:07 PM

Oh its terrifying, but its not to bad now that I look back. But I would never try to do it without a lift. That would suck balls on jack stands.

Yea screw that. Even with a lift it sucked. Now we know how though so we could probably do it a lot faster

100_Percent_Juice 2007-11-01 09:44 PM

^haha yeah totally. You have to admit, most of the time we were just walking around watching each other bash our heads on the lift.

wrxkidid 2007-11-05 09:13 PM

I hit my damn head so many times that day. I was getting so mad.
