RS on side of freeway(395 S)

southbound 395 over by the kietzke/virginia exit I saw a broken down 2.5 blue w/ black wheels. it had a red paper/sticker by the windshield and I thought I hope it doesnt get towed. I guess what I am trying to say is I was sad to see that.

JonnydaJibba 2007-11-15 10:11 AM

Thanks. =/

It will be getting towed soon.

Kevin M 2007-11-15 10:16 AM

What happened?

JonnydaJibba 2007-11-15 10:24 AM

I was just cruisin to work, in the slow lane and my car starts decelerating pretty quickly. The tach needle starts twitching as I slow down. I shifted down once and it did that fine, but nothing would happen when I gave it gas. Then it wouldn't start. I don't know what's wrong. I'm not really that much of a gearhead. Hopefully once we tow it here in a few minutes, we can figure out how bad it is or isn't.

cody 2007-11-15 10:42 AM

I'm sure you know, but just in case, make sure they use a flatbed to tow it.

Hope it's nothing expensive.

BOO 2007-11-15 11:10 AM

good I am glad it will be towed so nothing happens to it(ie.. vandalized overnight or gets hit)

MPREZIV 2007-11-15 12:28 PM

Cranking it, it seems like it may be down on compression... Cranks fast. Maybe timing belt issue... I haven't really had time to get deep into it, but I will this afternoon.

Alright mang. I REALLY appreciate it.

Libila 2007-11-15 12:49 PM

I've got my fingers crossed and hoping it's nothing serious Jonny.

JonnydaJibba 2007-11-15 01:09 PM

Doesn't sound like it.

tysonK 2007-11-15 02:19 PM

STI swap!!

Sorry about the news btw.

MPREZIV 2007-11-15 03:27 PM

Looks like a timing belt issue. Compression in cylinder #2 is only 40psi... no bueno. Belt possibly jumped or lost a tooth or who knows... I'll find out soon! Gonna start tearing!

MPREZIV 2007-11-15 05:15 PM

WELL! Belt snapped! There's teeth missing from multiple spots around the belt, (which *could* be due to the gears flopping around on it after it lost tension) and burnt up belt residue all over the inside of the cover.

I'll slap a new belt and tensioner on there in the AM (checked all the other pulleys, everything looks/feels fine) and check everything out to make sure there's nothing else. Should be good tho.

ScottyS 2007-11-15 05:33 PM

Ow, no interference, I hope.

wrxkidid 2007-11-15 09:06 PM

Thats what I was thinking....*crosses findgers*

Libila 2007-11-15 10:47 PM

Sounds like good news Cory.

Hey Jonny, worst case scenrio, WRX swap?

Dean 2007-11-15 11:59 PM

I'm almost positive that is an interference engine... Only the pre-1997s SOHC engines were non-interference.

Hope it only skipped a couple teeth and nothing crashed into each other.

MPREZIV 2007-11-16 07:53 AM

See, I thought the phase 1 DOHC 2.5 was interference, and the phase 2 SOHC 2.5 was not. I'll be slaping a belt on it soon as it shows up, and rechecking comression to be sure everything's okay tho.

Yes. There is a corner in the back of my mind that wants my motor to be done. I've got the NA bluuues.

Dean 2007-11-16 08:52 AM

I'm just going by Wikipedia... It may be wrong.
Quote:

The SOHC EJ Subaru boxer engines were non-interference engines through 1996, run by a single timing belt driving both cams (both sides of the engine) and the water pump. If the timing belt fails, the engine of the models up to 1996 will not be destroyed but re-timing is necessary, because they are non-interference engines. The oil pump is driven directly from the crank shaft and the waterpump by the timing belt. All DOHC and 1997-up SOHC EJ engines are interference engines, if the timing belt fails the engine will likely be destroyed or the valves & piston will be heavily damaged.

MPREZIV 2007-11-16 09:05 AM

Hmm... I'm not 100% positive either... I'll definitely be checking compression after I get it turning again.

Edit: Just heard back from Jeremy. He said it IS interference...

JonnydaJibba 2007-11-16 09:24 AM

WOW. So... that sounds like it's gonna suck.

MPREZIV 2007-11-16 09:37 AM

Jer said essentially, that he's seen his fair share of "lucky ones" that didn't have any engine damage with a broken belt, so it's worth putting on a new belt and checking the compression. If everything looks good, ship it! If there's valve damage, down there they usually just yank the heads and replace the valves, OR you could just get a whole new motor. Depends on which one turns out cheaper tho.

I just got the parts, so I'm gonna log off and slap her together real quick! I'll keep you updated!

BOO 2007-11-16 09:57 AM

You guys are scaring me, maybe I should get mine done too as I also have an 00 rs (for those of you who didnt know).

Somehow, I've had one of those "lucky failures"... not that any failure is lucky, but I had the passenger intake cam sprocket bolt shear off and my motor grinded to a halt... no valve damage. The valves happened to snap shut on the intake cam, and everything else stayed timed until the motor stopped.
