Need help finding a song.

Hey guys.

I am leading a retreat for my school and have to give a speech/story.

The speech is not a problem, what I am having a problem is with finding a song to go with it. I have to play a song at the begining and at the end.

My speech is supposed to parellel the story in the bible called The Parable of the Prodigal (Luke 15:11-32). http://www.centeringprayer.com/kingdom/kingdom03.htm I don't know if you are familiar with it. Basically the speech is supposed to talk about how this story relates to every day life.

I am trying to find a song, preferably underground hip-hop or something similar in sound to Creed or Staind that goes along with it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have one that I kinda like right now its called Dancing for Rain by Rise Against. Kinda a different sound from what I asked for above but I really like it. Like I said all opinions are welcome.

Thanks!!

EL-P - Flyentology (feat. Trent Reznor)

EDIT: also, fuck Creed.

I'm probably not Hippity or Hoppity enough for you, but there is one Creed song..

Ace Of Base - Beautiful Life
Creed - Whats This Life For
Green Day - Good Riddance
The Beatles - A Day In The Life (OK, maybe not)
Eiffel 65 - 03 - Dub in Life (Though I have no idea what this song means probably because I am old. )
Meat Loaf - Life Is A Lemon And I Want My Money Back (Probably not appropriate)
Monty Python: The Galaxy Song
Monty Python - Bright Side Of Life
Social Distortion - Story of My Life
Billy Joel: River of Dreams (Probably way to mellow)

There are a bunch of more mellow ones. Maybe some Sinatra? :)

When you find an underground hip-hop that sounds like Creed, let me know. I want to kill myself before the world ends.

And if you meant "underground hip-hop, or something similar in sound to Creed", remember commas are your friends.

Unknown Prophets - Sorry

Don't apologize... that's your cue to make a snarky comeback.

Like, "what, haven't you heard the new duet between Scott Stapp and Busta Rhymes called Flip Mode fo' Jesus?"

Just the thought of that in my head made me dry heave.

Can I get some cliff notes on the story and/or what the song is supposed to relate to exactly?

Cliff Notes:
There were 2 sons.
They wanted their inheritance now.
Their father gave it to them.
One went out and squandered it on women and partying.
He had nothing left to the extent that he desired what the pigs were eating.
The other son stayed faithful to the father and did nothing wrong.
The son who squandered his inheritance came back to the father asking for forgiveness.
The father had a party and slaughtered many fine animals because his son had returned to him.
The other son was mad and said "but I never strayed at all, why no party for me?".
The father is overjoyed that his son has returned and explains that "your brother was lost and now is found" he has sinned but has seen the error in his ways and returned to change his ways and repent.

From that point there are many different interpretations on what the moral of the story actually means depending on what religion is talking about it and out of what bible it was taken.

SIXX AM - Life is beautiful
Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye
Breaking Benjamin - You
give them a listen. Probably totally not what your looking for, but then again I don't know if you even know what your looking for. ;)

Yep thats the gist of the story.

Basically saying it is important to forgive someone who has wronged you.

That Sixx AM song is a good song I will go check those other ones out.

Moby's Play Album is kinda cool for backgroundish music.

wrxkidid 2007-12-21 12:58 PM

Its not really background music. One song is played at the beginning then I give my talk then another song is played at the end.

So many bands/people have done a song called "Prodigal Son", from Springsteen, to Hank Williams, to Kid Rock, to Iron Maiden even, maybe you should just pick one of those. It's gotta be one of the most cliché stories ever put to music.

Whenever I was told or taught this story I always related to the good son and it pissed me off. Like WTF, Dad? You *know* he only came back after he lost everything. You think he would have if things had worked out? NO! And what about me? I've been stuck here on the GDMF desert planet baking under these 2 hot-ass suns fixing your droids and working your moisture farm forever. And what do I get? Jeeezzz!

Plus you never get time to go to Tashi Station w/ your homies to pick up some power converters.

Hahaha!

Remembering Never- Pocket Full of Dirt

"I can see it in your eyes
This was never a waste of time
I have a pocket full of dirt
But in my hand a thank you note
With every beat of my heart
I wouldn't trade this for the world
I'll be sleeping with your ghost tonite
But I'm never dreaming
Fuck the marquees and the pompous lights
I'm never dreaming
Fuck the breakdowns and twelve hour drives
I'm never dreaming
I'll be sleeping with your ghost tonite
But I'm never dreaming
No
I won't lose sight
I won't dream tonite
I won't lose sight
I won't dream tonite
I can see it in your eyes
This was never a waste of time
I have a pocket full of dirt
But in my hand a thank you note
With every beat of my heart
I wouldn't trade this for the world
I'll be sleeping with your ghost tonite"

You can waste time with your friends after you slaughter that calf and hang the rest of the party favors!
